The Sims 4
How to Get a Job & Go to Work
Finding work is an important part of the game, unless you plan to make money with skills alone. Here's a step by step guide to getting a job and what you need to know in order to do well at work.
Step 1: Get Employed
Getting a Job in The Sims 4 and its Expansion Packs.
Using the phone in the bottom left, navigate to the 'Work' tab, which is in the middle. Alternatively, press the 'J' key or go to the careers tab manually in the bottom right (the symbol is a briefcase).
Step 2: Pick a Job
Depending on the Expansions and Game Packs installed, you may find a few types of careers. Freelancer is a new, unique career track.
A long list of potential jobs will appear. You can select between normal and active careers. The active careers are only available if you have the Get to Work or Get Famous Expansions. Those without these special symbols are typical rabbit-hole careers, where your Sim heads to work for several hours and you do not see them. Pay attention to the schedule and description, though these will change as you get promotions.
In addition to the Rabbit-hole careers, at time of writing, players can also choose to be a Style Influencer who can work from home, or a Freelance Artist, Writer, or Programmer. This last type lives on gigs, as in they are paid by the job. Finding gigs and completing them is the path to success.
Step 3: Be Ready for Work
Explore My Mods! Color Picker for Builders, Seasons Tuner, Dine Out Reloaded and a Gameplay Overhaul! Like other modders, I've been working to make The Sims 4 a better game. Check out my many mods here!
Sims will go to work automatically when it's time. You can see how many hours until work on the Careers tab ('J' hotkey).
Look to the careers panel to learn a lot about your Sim's job. There is a Career Performance meter, which will show you how far you have to go until your Sim is promoted. You'll also see the hourly wage and what days you go in. Note the work in x hours portion, which is always going to tell you how soon the next shift will come up.
Step 4: Go to Work
If you took one of the active careers, such as Doctor or Actor, then when the time comes you can choose if you will go to work with your Sim. Otherwise, your Sim will head off on their own (assuming they are not locked up in a task) as soon as it's time for work. You can also click the 'Go to Work' button on this panel if they are late and not going on their own.
A few careers, like Style Influencer, the three careers from City Living (Politician, Social Media, and Critic) along with the Seasons Gardener, can choose to work from home. This will give them tasks which appear on the careers panel.
Freelancers are the exception, and must use the careers panel or phone to pick gigs based around their chosen skill. You can survive off your Painting, Programming, or Writing skills. Completing the gig will earn you pay and job performance. If you finish soon, you can pick another gig allowing you to make more money. There are no limits to how many gigs you can complete each week, so your Sim can work hard and make tons of money.
Step 4: Getting Promotions
Going to Work in a good mood will give you a performance boost of about 20%, so it's very much worth it. In order to maintain that, you will want to top off your Sim's needs before work. Have fun and socialize before sleeping, then deal with hunger, bladder, and hygiene in the morning is a general rule of thumb to follow. If you click the briefcase icon on your Sim's portrait, you can choose to 'work hard' while your Sim's in a rabbit hole career. This gives another boost on top of that, but drains fun faster and Sims will often come home stressed.

A Deeper Game
The past month, I've spent every day tinkering The Sims 4, making quality of life improvements, gameplay changes, and new difficulty settings for the game. If you'd like to learn more about my project, visit the post on Patreon where you can download it now.
I have much more to come, since you can actually write a few guides about this pack!
Calling all Blender Users
Blender has been incredibly useful in video production, so I made my own Physics and Simulation Improvement Addon that lumps a ton of unique tools into one compact interface.
Sims 4 Snowy Escape
The Sims 4 Snowy Escape launches November 13, 2020 and my coverage has started. Until I get my review ready, you can learn about the following:
There is a new platform tool in The Sims 4. There's also a new Sentiments system, but it'll take some time to create a guide to that. Players can also use rental lots in any world now by changing lot types of builds in manage worlds.
Best Mods in Sims 4
I've created a massive List of The Best Mods in The Sims 4 that should be very helpful to new players and those who have not yet explored modding and how much it can do for your gameplay.
Readers who use adblock or those who'd like to thank me for my efforts can now pledge $1/$5 monthly via Patreon. This helps a lot with server costs and provides some stability for my business.
I now have a guide page to Tiny Living Stuff where you can learn about Murphy Beds, the new death, as well as the lot bonuses you'll receive if you manage to keep the size of your lot down with this new pack's Tiny Home Lot Type.
Let's Play Playlist
New I now have a guide to Making Super Sims in The Sims 4. Look for a text version within the next 72h. It won't have THAT much more info but it will help out as a checklist.
This was inspired by a series, "Let's Play a Super Sim" in which I start at toddler and gradually take on the major bonuses. Here's a link to each part for people who are interested. You can also see the Let's Play as a Playlist on Youtube.
The Sims 4 Discover University has been announced for November 15 for PC/Mac and December 17 for Xbox and Playstation 4 consoles. Click to learn more about the pack, see my summary of the livestream or read our FAQs below.
