The Sims 4 Fishing Skill
Bait, Fish List, & Guide to The Best Fishing Spots
This Guide to Fishing will help you Catch Every Fish
The Sims 4's Fishing Skill allows your Sim to catch fish and make loads of fast cash. Completing the Fish Collection is a goal many Simmers would like to achieve, and I aim to help with that by providing fishing spots for the hardest to catch fish. We'll also go over what you can do to make your fishing efforts better, and other useful things you can catch other than the fish themselves. If you already know about the skill and want to see the Fish themselves, Jump to the Fish List, but also read the Best Fishing Spots section below it!
How to: Fishing Cheats Press Control + Shift + C then type testingcheats on and press enter. You can now set your skill level with stats.set_skill_level major_fishing x (fill in 1-10) - we also have a full listing of Skill Cheats and a master list of Cheats in The Sims 4
A video covering the fishing changes in the patch that came with Island Living. Its impact on the skill is noticeable, and rare collectibles are easier to find. Money making is a bit more even, however reduced.
A Note on The Free Patch and Island Living Expansion
Island Living introduces fish traps and the ability to fish from water canoes. At the same time, the developers overhauled the fishing skill to make its unlocks a bit more interesting. Sims can now mentor in fishing and share tips, among other things. The level up list below should make it clear what abilities you get from fishing regularly vs with the Expansion installed.
Getting Started in Fishing
Head to one of the signs next to a body of water. This is a fishing spot, and will allow your Sim to start developing the skill. As you level, not a lot unlocks, but know that your chances of catching the most valuable fish increase substantially with each level. Know that to fully complete your Fish Collection, you will have an easier time with level 10 Handiness as there is a Fish is reliably caught in Forgotten Grotto that can only be accessed with Level 10 Handiness. The other area, Sylvan Glade, also has rare fish but is accessible to all Sims.
Unlocking Angler's Tranquility makes Fishing Therapeutic for Sims
Good Traits and Aspirations for Fishing
Genius - This will help Sims get Focused, which can be amplified a bit by the Trait below when Sims' Needs are also met. Don't select it just for this unless you will also pursue Mental Skills, as Geniuses get upset if they do not work on those types of Skills for a time. However, Angler's Tranquility from the Angling Ace Aspiration can make the negative Moodlet from this go away!
Loves Outdoors - This will help your Sim be Happy when Outdoors, and being Happy is believed to help increase Skill gains. It will also work with any other Positive Moodlets and let your Sim fish a little longer before their needs send them home.
Angling Ace Aspiration - Completing this Aspiration will get you a load of Satisfaction, while also making Negative Moodlets disappear while fishing through the Angler's Tranquility Reward Trait.
Sylvan Glade offers two Great Fishing Spots - Read on Hidden Areas
Skill Unlocks
Here are the few things that unlock as you raise your Sim's Fishing Skill Level:
Level 1 - Catch Fish, Mount them, and put them in Fish Bowls
Level 2 - Catch Bass, Koi, and Trout
Level 3 - Sims can Fish with Bait and gain the Examine Water ability on Fishing Spots. If you own Island Living, you can catch fish using Fish Traps (max 2) in ocean water.
Level 4 - Can Catch Catfish and Tilapia. Chance of catching treasure increases.
Level 5 - Catch more rare fish like the skeleton fish, "Captain Fishbones" Bonefish. Can now fish in any weather, and while uncomfortable, tense, or stressed.
Level 6 - Can Catch Rainbow Fish. Share Fishing Tips unlocks as a social ability, helping others to level the skill. If you own Island Living the amount of traps you can use is upped to 4.
Level 7 - Can now catch Anglerfish. Can share information on the rarest fish when asked about fishing spots. With Island Living your Sim is now more adept at deep sea fishing and can catch Bluefin tuna.
Level 8 - Teach other Sims to fish.
Level 9 - Can now "Angle for Big Catch" and share Expert Fishing Tips with other Sims.
Level 10 - A true master of the fishing craft. The most elusive and difficult sea creatures prove no match, and other Sims envy your finesse and technique. In addition, your Sim has mastered the art of trapping and can now have a maximum of 6 Fish Traps. The legendary Golden Mahi Mahi can now be found in appropriate ocean waters.
Social Functions
Talk about Bait and local fishing spots are two fishing socials that can be handy. Sims can also be mentored in fishing. Other Sims may provide you advice on fish baits and types of fish to fill out the notebook with helpful information. Fishing is also now a join/invite type activity, and you'll gain small amounts of relationship while fishing with each other (even though they won't really talk).
Displaying Fish Trophies
Fish Bowls let your Fish shrink and become Immortal! :P
Putting Fish in Bowls You may want to keep some of your catches alive. To do this, you must first find a Fish Bowl in Buy Mode > Objects by Room > Study > Indoor Activities. You can also search Fit4Fish. The bowl costs $60 and will magically shrink fish to accommodate them, while also making them immortal. The Freshness of the Fish does not matter: a rotten, dead fish will live on to serve as decoration for your home.
Mounting Fish To Mount a Fish, click it in your Inventory. Each will create Confident Decor based on the catch, from 2-4 each. Mounting or putting 15 fish in Fish Bowls is part of the Angling Ace Aspiration.
Click to Enlarge. Mounted Fish give off a Confident Aura.
Fishing with Bait
In The Sims 4, Fish do not require specific bait, but rather types of Bait. Fishing with Bait is better than without and seems to give you a better rate of catches, regardless. Certain types of Fish will only reliably appear at a Fishing Spot if your Sim is using bait. Bait types for each Fish that require it are discussed in the Fish List, below.
Bait raises effective skill level, meaning your Sim catches at a higher rate while using it. It also shifts the odds of specific fish, when you're using the correct kind of bait. Only a handful of fish really require bait if at all. But catch rates can be so low that you will want it if you're trying to finish a collection.
To get bait, you can harvest wild plants or pursue Gardening yourself. If you plant some for catching Fish, go for something that grows fast like herbs, as you want big stacks so you don't run out. Additionally, you can use your own catches as bait - some Fish want a medium-sized fish, like the Catfish, which itself eats any kind of Plant Bait. A recommend means of bait for one Rare Fish is to Look for Frogs in Ponds (Parks in Oasis Springs and Willow Creek have them). It's not super-reliable and requires you to queue up the action many times, but it's one of the best ways to get up stacks of specific types of frogs for using them as bait. Ideally, you want at least 4-5 in a stack so that you do not immediately run out of bait once you start fishing. The Ponds are a great way to get common Frogs, for the fish do not care about the rarity of the frog.
Frogs are Bait for Wolf Eels, and Ponds are a Great Place to Find Them
Examine Water
Examine water unlocks at level 3. When you use this ability, which is best done when Focused, you will get an idea of what types of fish lurk at that spot and may learn what types of bait they use. When it fails, there's no message. I think that if it fails you may not get to try again, but it's sensible to use it before you begin fishing as it can help to fill out the notebook over time with information.
Fish Traps (Island Living)
Island Living's Fish Traps catch fish automatically.
The Sims 4 Island Living introduces Fish Traps, which can be found under outdoor activities objects. These new traps can be baited just like your pole, and will attract fish based on the bait you use. It's still random, but it helps improve your odds of specific fish. What's more, there are three places you can put fish traps: shoreline water (ankle deep), snorkeling depth water (shallow), and deep water (where you scuba). Each of the three has a separate fish list that determines what you'll catch, so placing them further out may be of use to you.
Before you go placing tons of these, you need level 3 Fishing to place 2, which expands to 6 by level 10 in the skill. Fish Traps take about 40-48h to fill, though sometimes they are full earlier. You can harvest them at half, but it's strongly suggested you let them fill up as it's inefficient on time, money, and bait. You can check trap to determine how full the traps are getting.
Canoe Fishing (Island Living)
Want to fish off a boat? Island Living will let you.
Island Living lets you fish off boats. Buy a canoe in outdoor activities, place it on your lot. Now your Sim can load it into their inventory and select a spot of water, "Sail here". Once you're out in the water, you can click the canoe to use a fishing interaction - all your normal ones, even Aquatic Lure (mermaid ability).
Be aware there are two places you can fish off a canoe - deep water and shallow water. There is a large visual difference between the two, as you can see through shallow water but not the deep. The top left neighborhood in Sulani has deep water, as does Mua Pel'am, but the resort area has no deep water.
Aquatic Lure (Mermaid Ability in Island Living)
Aquatic Lure improves fish catch rates at any fishing spot, even a canoe.
Island Living's Mermaids can use an ability called, "Aquatic Lure" on fishing spots. This costs 30 hydration, so top off before you use it. When this spell is cast, the Sim pulls out a big conch and blows. The horn sounds and a glow appears on the fishing spot. Now fishermen at this spot fish as though they're 2 levels higher, and fish catch rates are improved (as opposed to treasure/seaweed). This effect lasts at minimum several hours.
Endangered Species
Catching an Endangered fish like the Golden Mahi Mahi may result in fines, but they sure look nice on a wall. Nearby Sims will get mad at you for keeping one.
Sometimes when fishing in Island Living, you'll catch an endangered species. You are given a prompt, either keep it or throw it back. You do not need to keep it for it to count toward collecting, but you will need to if you want to sell it or mount it on your wall. Keeping the fish with other Sims nearby results in a relationship hit, and you may end up with a fine for doing so. The fish list below has all the endangered fish I'm aware of, but here they are for your convenience: Golden Mahi Mahi, Leopard Shark, Butterflyfish, Bluefin Tuna, Royal Sabrefish.

Look directly behind Willow Creek Library. There is a peninsula. Look to the fishing spot on the very end, and come back one spot - you'll be facing a lighthouse slightly to your right when facing the spot head on. This is the best way I can think of to describe it. If you don't catch one quickly it's RNG, I can confirm this as of Feb 2020. Use Koi, Bass, Catfish, Rainbowfish, and other Medium Fish as bait. These are caught somewhat regularly in the pool at the back of Oasis Springs Park (not the pond, see below), and occasionally the pond in Willow Creek. As with all Rare catches, it may take higher than Fishing Level 7 to catch. This one most definitely requires bait to come up reliably.

Outdoor Retreat Fish Additions Seen in the table above, Outdoor Retreat adds 5 new catches to the Fish List. You'll find Walleye, Yellow Perch, Red and Blue Crawdads, and the extremely valuable Mountain Lionfish. The last two are rare and are likely only caught in the Deep Woods, at the Waterfall spot near the Hermit's House. Mountain Lionfish can be low value, or nearly $1k in value. They do not require any particular bait to catch.
Many Fishing Spots offer the Same Fish. Four other Spots can help you Finish your Fish Collection
Where to Catch Every Fish (List/Maps of all Fishing Spots) Playalot, Mr and Mrs. Flynn Arrowstarr created the following PDF which shows all neighborhoods, and the types of fishing spots you can find there. At the bottom, there is a list of the types of fish found in the various types of spawners. I have plans to convert this to HTML, but for now will just let people view it in this format as that may take some time.
We now have a Youtube Channel with over 50 guides in video format to go along with the huge site I've already created. Check it out and consider subscribing if you like my style.

Hmmm by the looks of things there are 22 fish to the base game collection, however there are actually 24 slots on the collection journal. While trying to catch the last of the 22 fish (the red tailed black shark which I found in the oasis springs pond) I came across a ""Captain Fishbones" Bonefish" with my collection now saying "Fish: 22/22 +1". Any idea whether info on these 2 mystery fish could be added? I haven't managed to find the second one yet.
For anyone wondering, I caught this fish using small fish as bait (Tetra to be specific) in the pond at the back of the oasis springs park.
you are missing a fish there is one more and I have both EP's and there is a missing fish in your list have no idea what it is it is a small fish I think have not found it yet.
You know... I've had zero luck when fish want something expensive. I've used salmon worth over $200 and only ever caught minnows. I've tried other more expensive fish like trout, catfish and even wolf eel and still never seem to catch anything worth more than the bait. I've had best luck with fishing using basil or minnow. So, if you get something good, post back and tell us what you used and what you caught!
is there any way of finding out what fish it is you havent caught? because ive sold most my fish previously before i did the fishing aspiration and its saying ive only caught 18/20 different types of fish and i have fished everywhere for ages using all different fish, plants, fruits and veg...
You can use the collections list in your sims UI. Bottom right, select your sims personal inventory>click on the diamond icon and the collections list menu will appear. But, the missing items are greyed out and not named so if you haven't caught them all before you will not really know what you are looking for unless you compare what you have caught with a fish list. Carl's on holiday at the moment so our fish list needs updating... I was going to link you to simsvip list but when I checked there's is needing updating too! The gummy fish, skeleton fish are from the base game (still to be added to guide) and the Spa day fish list is here.
Does the freshness of the fish matter when using fish as bait? I have a horrible tendency to go fishing and then forget to put my fish in the fridge when I get home, and wind up selling foul fish. Can I still use that fish for bait?
Will the dine out fish tank make fish immortal? Right now, I have the whole fish collection in fish bowls from the base game, which I read makes fish immortal.
I haven't actually used the fish tank from Dine Out but I assume it works exactly the same way as all the others. The fish do not die but can become 'foul' in quality causing a dirty/uncomfortable moodlet when sims are in the same room.
Thanks so much, Playalot --- I put 4 fish in the Dine Out fish tank (they are already foul --- but I have a storage room in my main house, so, my sims' won't smell it (the storage room doesn't have a door.) I also kept the rest of my fish collection in fish bowls in the storage room, as well.
I have been trying to catch the red-tailed black shark for forever, and I have tried just about every tip I have seen in here, but nothing seems to work. I have used small fish as bait, I am fishing at the pond in Willow Creek park, and my sim is fishing level 10. I would appreciate any tips, cause this is the last fish I need to complete my collection :)
This particular fish can be very difficult to catch if not caught as your sim levels up the skill. The best place to fish for it is at the small creek at the front right of Oasis Springs Park. There is a pdf guide on all the fish spawners with screenshots of the locations, game maps and key here Link The link to this in in the last paragraph on this page. Catching this fish has taken a L10 sim 3 sim days. I enabled cheats to keep up all his needs and he just stood there fishing non stop! Now I always head to this fishing spot as soon as my sim gets the notification that he can catch this type.
Thanks so much! I finally managed to catch it, and my collection is now complete :D I caught it at the creek in Oasis spring, like you said, using a perch.
Ok... how is it possible that one of sims at lvl 5 fishing or even one of their children can catch better fish than the lvl 10 fishing sim? Ie a captain fish bones or a gummy guppy
It often seems that some sims are just simply better at fishing then others. I always think it is as if there is a hidden 'fishing talent' skill however when you look at the code there isn't anything like that named. Also some fish are just easier caught when your sim is at the 'correct level'. For example I find that a level 7 sim will catch far more angel fish than a level 10 sim.
By fishing? lol Will be updating the fishing lists etc soon. Thanks for reminding us. It is native to Forgotten Hollow though so can only be caught there. Requires Level 5 Fishing Skill.
So my sim needs to catch 20 fish to complete the aspiration. She is maxed in fishing levels. 1) she has over 20 fish in her inventory, but the game isn't recognizing that. 2) I took her to the deep woods (hermit) with the idea to catch 2 more different fish, hoping that would help her finish the aspiration. However, when I try to have her fish by the waterfall, there is a red circle with a dash through it, not letting her fish there. I'd really like to have her complete this aspiration. she can still fish at home, and I am aware she can still catch more rare fish in Willow Creek park, Oasis springs etc. Any idea why she can't fish in the deep woods? And I'd rather not cheat, how can I get the game to recognize 20 fish?
It's not just any 20 fish you need to catch to complete the aspiration but one of each type of fish available in the base game. That is the 20 fish you need to catch. Chances are the fish in the inventory will have been recognized. Just look at the fish collection icons in your sims household collections lists to see which ones your sim still needs to catch. I don't know why your sim can not fish in the Deep Woods Hermit area but to complete the Angling Ace aspiration you do not need to actually catch the fish that the Outdoor Retreat pack added to the game. If the fish are not unlocked in the sims fishing collections icon list then perhaps dragging them out of the sims inventory and then back in may force the game to recognize them. To find the household Collections list click on your sims Inventory, next click on the diamond icon (will read household collections when hovered over)on the left side of the inventory, next click on the Fish tab to open it. Any fish caught will show up as a colored picture and hovering your mouse over the fish will tell you it's name and some details. Use Carl's guide to figure out what the missing greyed out uncaught fish are and target those ones in particular to complete the 20 fish collection. As said earlier you do not need to catch the plus 3 extra fish from various packs as it is only the base game fish that count towards the aspirations as it is a base game aspiration.
It is a lamp that can also be bought in the buy catalogue. It is supposed to be a set of three candles. Various buy items can be caught while fishing. The last paragraph on this guide tells you about a PDF that has all the fish/items and where they can be caught including maps etc. (Under the heading:Where to Catch Every Fish.)
Thank you Playalot! I was not aware it was only base game Fish that counted towards completing that aspiration, clears up a lot of confusion for me! Also (Palm slap to the head) I cannot believe I have never checked the diamond icon in the inventory, that will be so helpful with all of my collections. Thank you so much again!
Thank you so much for the guide, incredibly helpful! It may not matter much but I noticed something with putting fish in tanks/bowls. They did live forever etc, but if the fish I put in was foul, it remained foul and gave my sim the dirty environment moodlet until I took the foul fish back out of the tank. Could be a glitch I just wanted to share.
Get level 4 vampire lore skill. At that point you can turn the cheap fish into plasma packs that can be sold for $50. Really increases to profit at low levels. Awesome for the Rosebud Challenge since you can find the first vampire book at the library for free.
I need 4 more fish to complete my collection- Gummy Guppy, Bonefish, Wolf Eel, and an angler fish. I'm trying to get the Gummy Guppy and bonefish but They don't have a known bait. Has anyone got them i Magnolia Promanode with a bait? (even plants, since we have the booth in city living) thankes
All the fish types can be caught with no bait and each fish type doesn't really have a specific bait-type allocated to it. When your sim is focused then can scan the water and a text message will sometimes tell you what bait is best and this will increase the odds. Often basil seems to be a good bait but if you don't have to use small/medium fish as bait then any harvestable will work.
Thank you. it seems the spawners have been slightly readjusted in a recent patch. It's pretty difficult to keep 100% up-to-date with all the live updates the game gets! This list on our Fishing PDF Guide has most fish identified correctly. There may need to be some tweaks again re vampire squid.

A Deeper Game
The past month, I've spent every day tinkering The Sims 4, making quality of life improvements, gameplay changes, and new difficulty settings for the game. If you'd like to learn more about my project, visit the post on Patreon where you can download it now.
I have much more to come, since you can actually write a few guides about this pack!
Calling all Blender Users
Blender has been incredibly useful in video production, so I made my own Physics and Simulation Improvement Addon that lumps a ton of unique tools into one compact interface.
Sims 4 Snowy Escape
The Sims 4 Snowy Escape launches November 13, 2020 and my coverage has started. Until I get my review ready, you can learn about the following:
There is a new platform tool in The Sims 4. There's also a new Sentiments system, but it'll take some time to create a guide to that. Players can also use rental lots in any world now by changing lot types of builds in manage worlds.
Best Mods in Sims 4
I've created a massive List of The Best Mods in The Sims 4 that should be very helpful to new players and those who have not yet explored modding and how much it can do for your gameplay.
Readers who use adblock or those who'd like to thank me for my efforts can now pledge $1/$5 monthly via Patreon. This helps a lot with server costs and provides some stability for my business.
I now have a guide page to Tiny Living Stuff where you can learn about Murphy Beds, the new death, as well as the lot bonuses you'll receive if you manage to keep the size of your lot down with this new pack's Tiny Home Lot Type.
Let's Play Playlist
New I now have a guide to Making Super Sims in The Sims 4. Look for a text version within the next 72h. It won't have THAT much more info but it will help out as a checklist.
This was inspired by a series, "Let's Play a Super Sim" in which I start at toddler and gradually take on the major bonuses. Here's a link to each part for people who are interested. You can also see the Let's Play as a Playlist on Youtube.
The Sims 4 Discover University has been announced for November 15 for PC/Mac and December 17 for Xbox and Playstation 4 consoles. Click to learn more about the pack, see my summary of the livestream or read our FAQs below.

Catching this fish has taken a L10 sim 3 sim days. I enabled cheats to keep up all his needs and he just stood there fishing non stop! Now I always head to this fishing spot as soon as my sim gets the notification that he can catch this type.
This list on our Fishing PDF Guide has most fish identified correctly. There may need to be some tweaks again re vampire squid.
