What is gourmet pet food for?

I've seen an option to make these when clicking on the fridge and had my sim cook it, but it got stuck in her inventory. What is pet gourmet food for anyway? I've tried feeding it to my small animals but I couldn't figure out which option to choose.

I think it's just a special type of food that can be cooked for the pet and then placed in their bowls. They get a positive moodlet from eating gourmet food. The actual types of food (duck, etc.) are just what the food is made from, I don't think which one you choose matters.

Horse Granola can only be fed to Horses but it doesn't seem to matter what you feed your cat and dog.    The Gourmet food actually has a chance to add days to your pets life but it doesn't happen every time they eat the food.   For this reason, it's been banned in the dynasty because of the chance to extend the pets life.

I'm thinking the adding days/resetting the age bar is a bug feature, that's equal to humans getting tattoos makeovers and plastic surgery. Gourmet pet food is really for giving Fido, Whiskers and Horsey a special moodlet.

It's not a bug, it is intended. You can change the chance by creating an XML tuning mod that alters the Ingredient_0x76df356197fd4b81 XML file. Shimrod has one at his website, actually.

The default chance for pets to gain additional days from eating gourmet food is 20%. Every time your pet eats gourmet food, it can gain up to 2 additional days to its lifespan.

Additionally, in the SimDescription_0x2f781fbc26bb4d8a XML one can find the absolute limit for extra days gained from eating gourmet pet food. It is set to 18 days.

lol, they won't live forever. I did some extensive testing with this (give me five and I'll see if I can find the thread) and it only adds a day here and there. So unless you use a mod to increase the chances, it won't add that much to their life.

My dogs and cats typically eat from the bowl at least twice a day, sometimes more.  Since they're already living on epic lifespan and the chance of even a day's increase is 20% . . . maybe just shy of forever.

I find that the gourmet pet food thingy is a bit too much of a hassle for me, not to mention I have the Bottomless Pet Bowl LTR and that gives pets who feed from it a rather nice moodlet as well. And when my pets are nearing the end of their lives, well, I just purchase the Young Again Potion for Pets, haha.

Playing on a normal lifespan, it is usually more than enough for pets to accrue the LTH required for the potion since their wishes are often pretty simple and easy to accomplish: in fact, I only need to promise the wish and a lot of times the pet in question would fulfill it autonomously.

Next time you feed it to Polanco read the moodlet it gives him.  "That gourmet food really hit the spot! With gourmet meals like that, (Cat's Name) may be able to live a longer, healthier life."

Since it's based on chance, which is 20% in an unmodded game, it depends entirely on how (un)lucky you are. But if your pet eats Gourmet pet food every day, chances are high that it will max out the number extra days it can gain. 18 days is actually quite a high number for a 46-day pet lifespan on normal (if your pet is born as a puppy, lower if you get it as an adult).

Oh, thank goodness.  That's actually a relief.  I very much like having the pets my sims have, but having your dog outlive you when it was born first doesn't make much sense.  18 extra days on epic, that I can totally handle.

I'm not sure if this really helps you or not, but once my sim got served horse granola at the bistro.  That means that sims might be able to eat gourmet pet food.  Maybe that means that it could extend their life as well.  Or maybe it's just pets.  Either way, I'm not kidding about the horse granola.  Sadly I didn't check if it extended his life or not.

Wasn't that fixed in the patch that also no longer allowed sims to roast horse manure over firepits and eat them?

Or am I confusing bizarre stupid pet food glitches again?
