Babies drowning questions
« on: April 02, 2012, 02:24:31 PM »
I have a couple expecting their first and it made me wonder, do I need to keep as careful eye on the sim baby as I would a human baby around the pool?  Can they crawl to the edge and drown?  And also ponds, can they cause death of babies?

Side question, can sims swim in the ocean or river?  I have never tried it, but was wondering if that is possible.

Sims can only swim in pools and as far as I know only children and older can get into the pools.   As the controller of the Sims and their eventual child, she should be able to keep her away from the pool though.  The only time they don't really do anything is in the infant stage for the few days.

Sims 3 babies don't move at all on their own.  The only thing you really need to watch for is if you take the baby to a community lot, be sure to bring it home.   :P  The game should give you a reminder any time a baby or toddler is left alone without supervision, though.  It won't even let your sim walk around his or her own house if it involves taking one step off the lot while the tot is there alone.

Toddlers can crawl or walk pretty much anywhere, but they cannot negotiate stairs and no, I've never seen one even approach a pool.  Although I'm sure it's not the only way they can die, I'd put in a smoke alarm to prevent a fire from reaching an infant or toddler before the firefighter arrives to put it out.  Otherwise, it's a lot of the cute stuff without the baby proofing.  ;)

I wondered the same thing so I turned on moveobjects and put one(toddler) in the pool lol

He sat there for about 15 sim minutes just rocking back and forth laughing then floated, I guess for lack of a better word, to the surface and crawled to the edge but couldn't get out on his own. Not once did he get the drowning moodlet or anything.

He bah guys, sometimes you all really freak me out. Especially as being an uncle-to-be.
But toddlers and babies simply can't die because EA didn't want them to do. No matter how long you starve them or ignore them or whatever creepy thing you had in mind it won't work. And before you ask: my hands are clean and so is my keyboard. But I've saw some videos on YouTube made by creeps trying this out.
It wouldn't really have been a family friendly game if babies and toddlers could die, now would it?

Don't ask me what dying children have to to with a T for Teen rating though.

Maybe Janna was just asking to make sure there was no risk in putting a pool or a pond, with a house with babies or toddlers. I wouldn't say people are creeps for trying it. They may just want to know how far a baby or toddler can be ignored, just in case a babysitter does it, so they don't lose the baby or toddler. I don't believe in any of The Sims games, a baby could be killed, because there taken away before anything bad happens to them. I to like that babies and toddlers are safe from death until later life stages. It's really nice to not have to worry about them if there is a fire, because fire wouldn't hurt them anyway. The Sims isn't totally family friendly, it has WooHoo, and your Sims can go to bars and stuff.

Welcome to the forum. You've got a lot of posts on your name already I saw, though I don't think I've seen you before.
But too straighten this out: I wasn't calling any of the members above me in this list creeps. And I didn't thought it either. But I'm glad you've pointed me too it, so I can say I wasn't trying too offend anyone here.

The first baby ever born in any Sims game, back in Sims 1, was removed because I didn't know I had to leave an adult home to take care of her.  When the game is brand new to you, you don't have any of the knowledge we take for granted as experienced players.  I had never thought of a pool being a danger, but I had never thought of so many things that are real features of Sims 3; Janna's question is a very good one.   :)

An additional idea, Janna.  I do use gates in my sim homes, but not for the baby's safety.  I use them to keep visitors and busybody family members away from the child.  Babies and toddlers are magnets for attention, which might seem nice, but it really unwelcome when the baby desperately needs Mom or Dad to feed or change him and the neighbor won't put the little one down!  Locked doors and gates are your friend.   8)

Thanks everyone,

Sims mimic so much of real life it is hard to know what can happen and what can't.  After reading of how a sim could be boxed in a pool so they would drown it made me wonder, what about a baby, can they drown?
With mom and dad having a pool to use to help with atheltic skills and for the fun of swimming, it made me wonder about the baby. I have seen sims sit a baby down and walk off; the kid might look cute grabbing onto his feet and rocking, giggling, but still . . .
The last thing I had wanted was for mom to let the tyke lose while I was occupied with dad.

In locking gates and doors, doesn't that affect the maid?  The first time I had a maid, when she came to clean she couldn't get in.  She threw a hissy fit and left.    So, since then I haven't locked the door.

thesimslover,
Thanks for jumping to my defense.  After reading a lot of Leto85 posts, I figured he was speaking in general, not specifically to me or any person on the forum.   Some of the things seen on YouTube can be performed by some really loony people.

Or really bored people like myself  ;D Nothing says LOL like a room full of 10 Sims on fire! In all seriousness I do play the game 99% of the time like it's meant to be played. But that 1%...

Back on topic. I'm pretty sure locking the doors does effect the maid. I usually have a butler or just clean the house myself.

I was more concerned with limiting access to the kids in their cribs.  Infants never need to leave their cribs and I always made sure my toddlers' needs were met before setting them free to play on the floor, exposing them to well-meaning babysnatchers.  My latest nursery had two parts: an open play room and a fenced off portion with cribs.  The maid had no need to go in there, so limiting access was not a problem.  Technically, the only thing baby-related the maid could really do is empty potties and possibly a trash can if you keep one nearby for drop the potty waste in.  This would be more of an issue if you've got a crib in the parents' bedroom, for example.

This is the fenced-off portion:

That's the babysitter, so obviously I did allow some folks in sometimes.

Alexis and George are out in the country, no close neighbbors.  So, I am not really worried about people walking in and being a bother.  It will be more the other way around.
I don't seem to have the knack of keeping them in contact enough with friends they do make.  George lost his partner and one of his co-workers got upset, don't know why, when he invited her over.  She came in the house, yelled at him and left.

Riverview doesn't have the nice central park like Sunset, so I am having fun (not) in trying to find a place where people hang out with their families.

No problem,so did I and I just wanted to explain that some people do it for research, not necessarily just to be mean to Sims. I also ''torture'' them, and have some fun throwing chaos into their lives. But I always bring them to life, or just don't save the game. Adult Sims I mean.

When I start playing way back in sims2 I was affraid the toddlers will fall off the stairs and even the sims if there isn't a railing! When you start out you don't know things like that.
