Fixing my DEP files
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:16:16 AM »
I am trying to delete the files I have in my DEP list, but it wont let me.  I have tried to unclick them and then hit ok and then restart computer.. no go. I tried unclicking, then deleting them all, then hit ok and restart comouter, no go..  I have tried click the Turn on DEP for essential programs and services only, hit ok then restart my computer. come back switch to turn on DEP for all programs except those I select and they are then there again.  I have no idea what to do.  Someone thought it was because I had the extra files in my DEP list that I might be having my crashing problem. Can someone help me figure out why I cant delete/remove them?

I have the following in my DEP list

Sims3Launcher.exe
Sims3Launcher.exe
TS3.exe
TS3EP01.exe
TS3EP02.exe
TS3EP03.exe
TS3EP04.exe
TS3EP05.exe
TS3SP01.exe
TS3SP02.exe
TS3SP03.exe
TS3SP04.exe
TS3W.exe

the last one TS3W.exe I want to keep but I cant delete any of these files at all.  Can anyone help me please?  I am still trying to figure out why my game won't work. It only works if I use the base game with no updates

I don't think having all of them listed would make any difference but I don't understand why you can't remove them.  I just checked my PC and all I have to do is put a tick against the one I don't want and hit the 'remove' button.  I have Vista on my PC. :)

You may have mentioned it somewhere but do you have administrator rights on your PC?

I have just found this post.  It looks like this guy could not remove programs from DEP that he had uninstalled.  That is probably the same problem you are having.  http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/cant-remove-programs-from-dep-exception-list

Thank your for showing me that post.  I am going to try what he found and see if it helps. Wish me luck :)  I will let you know if it helps my problem and hopefully my big problem of not being able to play except on my base game.

Well I tried as the post suggested and it did not work for me. I really do not understand why I can not delete or even unclick any of my .exe files in DEP.

Reason I want to try this is MoonsAreBlue said she has a similar problem as mine and when she deleted her extra DEP and had just TS3W.exe in DEP her computer stopped crashing. At this point I am trying everything I can to get my game working (I miss playing it hehe)

I do appreciate your help though and hope maybe you can help us think of something else?

I am sorry but it seems your problems may be with Win 7.  I can not find anything more on your DEP problems and why it won't allow you to remove programs, so it would seem to be an unusual glitch.  I don't think it would cause your crashes having those names on there but the fact is, Win 7 should be allowing you to remove the names easily and it is not doing that.  It is also odd that your computer crashes on everything but the base game.  I don't want to frighten you but have you checked your computer for a virus?  Trend has a free scanner online.  Here it is: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/au/
Trend is a trustworthy anti-virus maker so you are quite safe using that scanner.  :D

Oh My God!!! I think I finally found out what happened.  Many of you will probably laugh at me which I probably deserve (and I don't know if it is note worth to post in your Tech problem stickies). As i said before these were the files I couldnt delete out of DEP

I have the following in my DEP list

Sims3Launcher.exe
Sims3Launcher.exe
TS3.exe
TS3EP01.exe
TS3EP02.exe
TS3EP03.exe
TS3EP04.exe
TS3EP05.exe
TS3SP01.exe
TS3SP02.exe
TS3SP03.exe
TS3SP04.exe
TS3W.exe

the last one TS3W.exe I want to keep but I cant delete any of these files at all.

Well I was looking around the forum while I was loading my games for the 8th time, when I decided to look at my DEP list again.  It was really late for me and I was tried, and I went into The Sims 3 files in Computer/Window C/Progrgram Files (x86)/Origin Games/The Sims 3/Game/bin/The Sims 3/TSLHelper and saw this file (I was tired and thought ok, I need help and added it my DEP files thinking it couldnt get any worse). Well then I played around a little more with the files trying to delete them all and it dawned on me..  This file was the ONLY file deleted. Took my 2 more hours to put 2 and 2 together because I was so tired and still loading my games to try something else. As soon as all my games downloaded off Origin Launcher I realized..  the files I had on there were from games from my discs that I have packed away and can't find at the moment, and these files are listed totally seperate with a different way of listing DEP as well.

I can not delete the files still because I can not find my discs atm, but since I added the TS3W.exe from that location it adds it to my DEP list as "Sims 3"   with nothing else typed.  I thought they still needed the whole file name with the extension on there so I didn't realize I had been looking at my solution all this time.

I have been playing a test world for over a week in sim time now (could only play for 5 seconds before this) and other than slowing down and stopping every once in a while it works and I can play.  I have missed my sims and cant wait to play my saved files if they can play now.

And finally to all the Carl and Pam's The Sims 3 Forum readers/helpers;

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that has spent time reading this post and my other post, trying to help me with this problem. It is the wierdiest thing I have ever gone thru to be honest.  I assume many of you who are computer literate, can go thru this in your sleep, but it is a huge overwhelming chore for little old me lol (and scarey because I can see myself messing my computer up to the point I have to wipe my whole computer down (reformat is it called?) and try to reinstall windows, then whatever else I have collected over the years lol.  I wish I was like you guys, I admire you all and well Thank you again!! And thank you for being patient with me.

Special thanks to MoonsAreBlue and Figwit

No-one will laugh at you.  :D  It's all too easy to overlook things and I am sure we have all tripped over our own feet before now or will in the future.

I am very happy that you solved the problem.  I hope your game behaves for you now.
