Making Save Files into a New World
« on: March 30, 2012, 02:20:54 PM »
Hey everybody.

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Okay, so it has always bugged me that the Ambitions buildings are always improperly placed in EA worlds and with the release of Showtime, there are now twice as many lots with the same problem. So I started to edit Riverview (my favourite world) to fix this problem. I should probably mention that I am not editing any .world files or anything that complicated. I am just using a brand new Riverview and the Edit Town feature to get the lots exactly how I want them.

As a result, I have a save file with all of these changes in it. I was hoping there might be some way to add that save file to the list of available towns that we see whenever we select 'New Game' on the main menu so that if I ever start a new Riverview game, all of the changes I made are still present.

I don't really want to use the 'Copy Town' feature that is already built into the game because that just creates another save file and there is a chance that I might accidentally overwrite it.

So, does anybody know if there is a way to do this?

I'd say you can not add it to the list of towns, but why not let it sit as it is as one of your save files, and when you start playing with a sim, use "Save as..." to create another file for the actual game. This way, you would have a brand new but fully edited Riverview-file which you can use whenever you want to start another game there.

Ahh. That's a shame!

I would do that but I have a tendency to just click 'Save' instead of 'Save As...' and I end up overwriting it  :( If that is the only way I can achieve what I want then I guess I'll have to get used to it.

Thank you for the reply though.

Well, if you remember to "Save as..." just once when you start the actual game play, it shouldn't matter. :)
But, it might be I'm just not so well informed, I'm sure someone will correct me if this can be done in any other way. For now, this has been the way I do it - in addition to commercial lots, I tend to bulldoze some residential houses and replace them and that is a burden to do again and again. So I have those edited towns stored in my savefiles.

On the Menu there is a way to select the file you have edited and there is a button down by the 'Delete Save' button to copy the Save. Not sure how it works I just know it is there.

Hey samoht04, Thanks for the suggestion. I have noticed the Copy button before but if I remember correctly, all it does is create an identical save file which is fine... but as I mentioned to Noodles, I sometimes accidentally save over them. It seems like I will just have to be more careful with the way I save my game.

After looking through My Documents at all of the Sims files, I'm now wondering if I can just drag a copy of that particular save file to my desktop and then if I make the mistake of saving over it in game, I still have the original file on my desktop that I can just add back into the game.

Yes, you could do that. Just rename it when you move it, so that it doesn't overwrite anything.

Put a copy of that save with the back ups of your regular game saves.  If you don't back up your save games, you should.  File corruption is a significant problem with the Sims, and backing up your saves (either in another location on your hard drive or on a flash drive) can save you an incredible amount of work.

Samoht, wasn't it Anushka who made Union Cove to be selectable in the list of Towns to be chosen? Perhaps this can work the same way.

There are two versions. The one you are talking about is made in CAW, it used Mods to populate it though so that is why it is in the list. There is also a save file for people who don't have all EPs as the World glitches or something if you don't have all the EPs.
