Surely stuff from the Sims 3 store should be all right, though?

From the Store, yes.  Those are items designed by the people who made the game, whether you pay for the items or they are free.  It's the Exchange where you run into the risk because that stuff is uploaded by players and you never know what they've put into the file you download.

You can't put anything into the file as far as I know. I have made a couple of items with Blender, Milkshape and the TSR Workshop and those things are really save. The worst thing that could happen is that the items don't show up in the game as they should be. (Mostly the artist has do something wrong with the raytracing so objects don't look natural, or even worse: he has placed the object not proper in the grid, coordinate system, so they don't even show up at all. :P)
But of course, you could alway's make a backup of your savefile before trying anything.

What I mean is that a player somewhere will build a house and use third party custom content.  Perhaps a modified plant or a window.  Or maybe they've put custom content on the Sims as clothing that wasn't purchased at the Store.  When this happens, that content is in the file that is packaged and uploaded to the Exchange on the official Sims 3 site.  Then when someone else downloads it, that custom content comes along with it and becomes part of their game even if they don't want it.  Many times this is bad bad bad because the custom items will really mess up the game.  I had "nude" clothing get into my game this way more than once.  I was not happy, to say the least.

Ah so! No, that is not good at all. I'm not sure if we are allowed to upload custom content to the original site (I think we are not) but if we are, then we should at least notice it. I mean, that is what I should do.

On the Official Sims 3 Facebook page they say that if you post a comment on this youtube video that you will be entered to get some free Sims 3 stuff.  You have to be logged into your YouTube account to win.

Plus it's a pretty cool video!  Looks like there might be some natural disasters in Ambitions!

Incredibly cool video!  I spotted Iron Man, Black Widow, the X-Men, Hulk, Poison Ivy, the cast of Kick Ass, Robin, Conan vs. Leno (lol) and Obama.
I'll have to leave a comment, I love free stuff :)

What is your youtube account than? I like to see what other simmers upload. You don't have to type it here, you can do that on youtube also. My account has the same name as I do here.

The video was really cool.  But don't get your hopes up too high.  It wasn't a trailer for Ambitions.  There's a disclaimer at the end that it doesn't necessarily depict actual game play.

True. A lot can be made by editing or special effects.
