« on: March 23, 2012, 06:51:36 PM »
i was googling sims and i cam across this http://simsvip.com/?page_id=8081
is this just made up or is it actually possible?
where would it actually get its sources?
aparently this part was taken from the script "Congratulations! {0.SimFirstName} has achieved the Alchemists Anonymous skill challenge. Check {0.SimFirstName}’s Skill Journal for information about the reward."

This information was first exhibited at ModTheSims by the modders there, if I remember correctly. Those people can see the game code and are rather quick at exploring a new patch update to see what changes it makes before applying it to their game. This is where Sim-news sites like SimsVip or SimPrograms get their information from.

However, if you are still not convinced or want to check for yourself, you could always ask SimsVip's admin at their Twitter account. Whenever I have a question about the site, I always send them a tweet with my question. That is the quickest way of communication currently.

These are new Fog Emitter codes, and while it's unclear as to who actually discovered them first, the first report of their existence came from a video posted on YouTube.  I'd post a link, but I can no longer find it.

SimsVip gets their information by copying things they find on other sites.

Quite frankly I dont mind where they get their sources, I dont give credit to any internet news site because you can never tell who got it first in reality, all you can tell is who posted it first, all I care is that their not just making it up (Edited by ratchie to remove profanity and to correct spellings.)

Making it up?  No.  Is it, strictly speaking, accurate?  Maybe, maybe not.  At this point, all that can be done is to speculate about it.  We won't get any kind of confirmation until it's close to being released.  They likewise inadvertently released sliders for ear points and nose flattening for what is assumed to be this upcoming expansion with one of the super patches.  Don't bother looking for it:  it's long gone.  The only thing we know so far is that the patch introduced new effects with the Fog Emitter, and the code names suggest that they're somehow related to expansion pack 7.

There is a theory floating around (which I believe myself) that all of these leaks are, in fact, not accidental.  Think about it for a second:  something "accidentally" gets leaked, and then there's this huge effort to cover it up, which only makes people want to talk about it more.  That's exactly what happened with Pets.  This shoddy trailer (which was of such poor quality that even I thought it was a hoax) was leaked on an official looking YouTube channel, then after a few hours it was immediately pulled off and EA acts like it never happened...even though millions of people had already seen it.  You couldn't go to any Sims related site and not see some buzz about it.  We even had one here, before it was locked (we don't allow such discussions without an official confirmation).  And it's not the first time this has happened.

Reverse psychology viral marketing.  If it is intentional, it's one of the most brilliant marketing strategies I've ever heard of.

I wouldn't call them wrong or unreliable but I don't think it's a truly accurate source as to what is coming with future EP's/SP's. The information is basically factual, but without sources, a la Wikipedia.

So basically her info is like me using my A+ research paper on Dell Computers as a Wikipedia article. I do not work for Dell, nor do I know anyone who does, and I certainly don't know the owner of Dell Computers. I only work at Sears.

So Sims VIP is about as accurate as Wikipedia.

While I don't think that the Wikipedia comparison is a good one (the information isn't posted and can't be altered by users), the assessment that it's not always an accurate indicator of future expansions is spot on.

The admins there don't work for and don't appear to have any contacts inside EA, and even if they did they wouldn't be able to tell us anything that we don't already know.  It's essentially a fansite, and like any other fansite all they can really do is speculate on available information like the rest of us.  Speculation can be wrong, but it isn't wrong by virtue of being speculation.  When it's wrong, it's because the person speculating didn't have enough information to make an accurate prediction.

But if you look past the speculation and only pay attention to the actual facts provided, it can be a reliable source of information.  The facts in the article you linked are that there are new Fog Emitter codes, their names seem to indicate that they're related to EP 7, and the effects may have something to do with magic.  However, the expansion may not revolve around magic any more than Late Night revolved around vampires.
