Technical problems with the game (Installing)
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:32:35 PM »
Hi, I am an old lady trying to help my niece get her sims 3 games going

I personally have never played the game.  I Usually repair infected computers, so this is a first for me.   :o

I have a Win7 X 64BIT laptop, I uninstalled the Sims 3 game from the computer, but there are still folders in the Users_my documents folder.  (The game wouldnt launch no matter what I tried  :(

I have all the serial numbers, but am so confused  :-\  AND I don't see a way to uninstall all the expansion packs in the add/remove in Control Panel?

Can I just reinstall the Sim3 Main Game and leave the expansion packs in there? (crossing fingers)  hehe

My niece does Not play online, only with the CD's.  I could really use some help!  I bet I bookmarked 30 or more sites with possible solutions,  then I happened to find you guys and I am thrilled.  You all seem to know what you are doing.

Just let me know the easiest/best way to get these all working...please   :) Here is what I have:

The Sims 3 Base Game (Deluxe)
The Sims 3 World Adventures Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Ambitions Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Late Night Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Outdoor Living Stuff
The Sims 3 Generations Expansion Pack

*****************************************************

All windows, up to date, drivers, direct x, etc.  I think at some point something got corrupted and she had NONE of her updates installed.

She is out of town this weekend, so I need to install and try to play the game {THIS should be interesting!)

Please advise or link me to the directions in this massive forum!  I will be forever indebted and greatful   :) ;D

Gracias!

Barbara

P.S: looks like the dates in the folders are all the way back to June, 2011, I don't know if that helps or not.  Thanks again!

Could you please explain the exact behaviour of the game you need help with? Does it not start or give you error messages? Does it not install correctly at all? Are you sure the computer matches the game's minimum system requirements? It would be great if you could provide a dxdiag scan of the computer as well. That way we would know for sure.

The folder in the My Documents folder after uninstallation is fine. You can delete it if you do not intend to play the game on that computer again. It is the folder where the game holds saved files, process caches, custom content information and more user files.

I'm a little confused about "The Sims 3 Deluxe". It actually includes both the base game and the expansion pack Ambitions - thus the separate expansion pack is pretty much useless. Perhaps you mean "The Sims 3 Collector's Edition"? Did it come with a USB drive or something similar? If so, then that's the Collector's Edition, not the Deluxe one.

Lastly, are you sure the game is up-to-date? In order for the game to work correctly along with the expansion and stuff packs, you need to have the latest game update. Currently it is patch update 1.33. If you are sure that the computer matches the game's system requirements and that the installation is performed correctly, you should download and open the file located here.

Thanks so much for your quick reply! (Sorry I am so late with mine, I had a different computer with a massive rootkit infection. This gaming stuff is all new to me!!

I only know that when clicking on the game launcher wouldn't launch anything.  Dead, kaput...  :-\

I kept looking online for the Sims 3 gamelauncher problem and encountered many with the same issues, but alot of the pages on the EA games website were dead ends.

I am sure the computer meets the requirements, I tested it on EA games I think? At this point, I don't have the "main game" installed anymore, I thought I could just remove and reinstall.  But after all the reading, I am not so sure.

I double checked and the name of the main No# 1 game is:  The Sims Deluxe and you are correct, it includes the ambitions expansion pack?  Perhaps that is some of the problem??

So to summarize where I am at this moment:

1.  I think she would like to keep where she left off, so I backed up game files from the documents folder just in case?
2. The Main game itself has been removed from this computer, only the expansion packs are still on here as far as I can tell?
3.  Can I simply reinstall the main game, then update it with the patch you linked me too?  I HOPE so!  ???
Here is a dxdiag scan:

Hi mividaloca.

If you have your current games safely backed up, I think the best thing is to do a complete re-install just to make sure that you have everything you need installed properly.  If you can't uninstall the games through Control Panel, you can manually uninstall them using these instructions.

Once you have the game completely wiped from your computer, you can start installing from the beginning.  One question here...  is Ambitions on a separate disk from the Sims 3 base game?  I think it should be, but I'm not sure how those deluxe packages work.  If Ambitions is a separate disk, you'll need to install it in the proper order, which is the order the games were released.  There's a link at the bottom of the manual uninstall page that will show you the order to install the games.  Once you begin installing, you will be prompted to update your game at the start of each installation.  Just install everything as prompted and continue through all of the game disks.  It took me about an hour to completely install the game and I've got all expansion and stuff packs up through Showtime.

After you've finished the installation, launch the game using the Sims 3 launcher.  At that point, you'll be told there's an update to the game.  This should be update 1.33 and will bring you completely up to date to the current version of Sims 3.  Now you can put your saved files back into the game.

I hope these steps will make it easier to get everything going.  If you have any more questions, just post them here and we'll do our best to help you.

Your computer slightly exceeds the minimum game requirements and your graphics card should support the game on medium graphics.

Yes, you can indeed do a partial reinstall of the game by just uninstalling the, "main", base game and then reinstalling it, not touching the expansion and/or stuff packs in the process. Of course after reinstalling you should patch up.

If you want to backup the save files and all of the user files you can copy/paste the Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder somewhere else. When you reinstall the game (or just the base game), replace the newly created identical folder with the backed up one and you should be fine.

Wow"! I had NO Idea there was so much involved in running/playing installing a game  :o  !!  I have a New found respect for you all!!  Also I found some dump files and

I think my niece was playing these games just fine on another computer and then when she got this one, she didn't have internet (live out in the country)  She has been unaware there is such a thing as DEP and or any Patches!  I also found 2 :  xcpt*.txt and some mini dumps.  Wish me luck I haven't a clue what I am doing yet, but it is starting to make more sense!

I found some Sims families in her files somewhere, so she must have made it thru a few hoops!  I hate to admit, but I think she might be a bit illiterate where computers are concerned.  She doesn't have alot of time with school, traveling to dance competitions, etc.  Once I finally get this up and going, maybe one of you kind folks can give me the top things she should learn from the computer regarding Sims games, to keep on top of things.  (I might figure it out by the end of this ordeal  :P

MY most important question comes from reading this:

1.  I don't know where I found it, but it said something like before I install the latest patch, I have to at least have 1.29 cumulative installed.
Should I follow this example: http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Data_Execution_Prevention/Multiple

If you don't have access to the internet, all of the information about updates becomes moot.  You can only update the game with an internet connection.  I'd still recommend a complete re-install so that you've got the game installed properly and any glitches will hopefully be gone.

The files that start with xcpt and also the *.txt files are crash logs the game automatically creates whenever it crashes. They can be analyzed with specific utilities to indicate the probable cause of the crash.

Regarding your question, the DEP (data execution prevention) option is mainly to be used in case the game starts to unexpectedly crash or alike. However for extra safety you can add the TS3W.exe (it has changed with patch 1.22, currently this is the executable used for launching the game) to the DEP exceptions list at any time.
