Ch. 6: Rumors

The next day, Diana heard from Agnes while at work. She was getting her bonus of 15,000 simoleans. Diana was glad she had made the commitment. Agnes’s demeanor towards Diana was completely different now. She was genuinely happy to see Diana and to congratulate her on a job well done. Perhaps the good mood was more associated with the rumor that she’d been spending time with one of the Frio brothers. Diana was just relieved that she’d done it. Her raise would allow her to adequately support her children on her own with some money to spend on herself even.

That bonus was really burning a hole in Diana’s pocket, so she did what any woman would do. Spend it! Most of that money was spent on a new car, so Diana could stop carpooling.

The rest was spent on improving the household items. They desperately needed a new fridge, and Charlie received a new bed, along with his own bathroom. Little did he know he would be sharing that bathroom in the future.

A few days passed before Diana knew she was pregnant again. During those days, she spent time with Charlie. She didn’t know if she was pregnant just yet, and she had no idea how to tell Charlie if she was. He was such a peaceful child. Would having another change things? Diana took advantage of his young age and opted to not tell him until he asked.

Angel still came over to the house almost every day. Diana took a little pride in the fact that the kids seemed to prefer to come to her house than to stay at Claire’s. And that suited Diana just fine because she could help them with their homework while she ate some slightly burnt cupcakes from the Easy-Bake Oven. She would do whatever she could to spend time with these kids. And she still yearned to have another one of her own.

Charlie and Angel loved to play “Royal.” Basically, they dressed up as princes and princesses and ran around the house waving magic wands. If only Diana could fit into those costumes! She would join them in a heartbeat. Maybe she’d have to get a costume of her own.

But before Diana knew it, she’d become pregnant, and she’d had her new baby girl, Allison. Thankfully for Diana, Charlie never figured it out until she was born.

Charlie was thrilled when he found out. “Mom!” he said, “You got me a baby sister for my birthday?! That’s so cool!” Diana felt a little too relieved that Charlie was happy. She should have told him she was pregnant, but then she’d have had to explain where babies came from and all that stuff. It wasn’t something she was very comfortable with. But since it was Charlie’s teen birthday, Diana knew she’d have to have “the talk” soon.

Charlie couldn’t have had a better birthday, though. He got a baby sister, all of his friends from school attended, and Diana’s real present for him was a Cocker Spaniel named Luke.

Charlie grew into such a handsome young man. Diana couldn’t believe it. His looks were finally starting to show, and he’d gotten Gobias’s nose. Diana wasn’t too sure how she felt about that.

Even as a teen, Charlie was so happy to have a little sister. He spent hours watching her in her pink swing, talking to her, and playing peek-a-boo with her. Allison gave cries of joy whenever Charlie walked past her swing. Diana couldn’t have been happier. Her two children were getting along splendidly. There was however, the matter of Gobias…

Over the course of the past few days, Diana had heard some unsettling rumors. Whispers here and there told her, “I heard Diana's paying men to get her pregnant.” “Keep your husband away from Diana. She’ll seduce him.”

However, the worst of these rumors came to her from her boss, Agnes. The worst part about it was that it wasn’t a rumor. Agnes stopped by Diana’s house one afternoon, and she seemed genuinely concerned.

Agnes started spewing out words rapidly, “Diana, I don’t know how to tell you this other than to just get it out. You need to know, and it would be best if you heard it from someone you know than just as some rumor.

“Gobias proposed to Dorie Hart.”

Diana shrugged it off. “What does that have to do with me?” she asked Agnes.

“I know he’s Charlie’s father. He’s Allison’s too, right?” asked Agnes. She didn't wait for an answer and continued, “I just thought you should know. I mean, if I had a child with Connor and then he proposed to another woman, I just—”

Diana cut her off, “So that’s who it is! Connor Frio! That’s why you’ve been so happy lately.”

“Yes!” exclaimed Ages. “He’s just so wonderful, Diana. I’m still in mourning over my late husband, Eric, but I really think I’m about ready to lose these black clothes. But this isn’t about me. This is about you, Diana.”

Diana had only pointed out Connor to give her something else to think about. She didn’t want to think of Gobias or how he was getting married. However, Diana was glad to hear it from Agnes and not as some rumor around town. Diana told herself she would give Agnes a chance as a friend and not just her boss.

Agnes quickly left after Diana politely told her she was going to think about the situation by herself before talking to anyone. Agnes understood and offered that her phone line was open if when she did need to talk.

Luckily for Diana, the next day was her birthday. Making the plans was enough to distract her from herself. Even Agnes attended but she was polite enough to not ask about Gobias.

Diana enjoyed her birthday quite a lot. Claire and Angel both attended, and Angel had aged up into a beautiful young lady. She looked almost exactly like her mother.

The only bad thing that came about from Diana’s adult birthday was that she had a bit of a mid-life crisis. She started working out. She planned to get a tattoo, but quickly reconsidered. Diana just couldn’t commit to something that permanent on her body. But among other things, Diana made the decision to cut off her hair into a more stylish look. She also added a few new outfits to her wardrobe.

She may have gained a few wrinkles, but Diana’s haircut definitely made her feel younger.

Finally, Diana had the time to sit down and organize her thoughts about Gobias. Of course he was getting married. He would have married Diana if she’d wanted him to. He was old now, and it was understandable that he wanted to settle down. However, that wasn’t what most upset Diana.

Diana had really screwed everything up. Why had she not just taken Gobias up on his offer to be together? Why did the thought of sleeping with him every night disgust her, but misleading him into her house that night didn’t bother her at all? Did Gobias even know about Allison? Should he? Did Dorie know about Allison? It was hard to believe she did. Allison was only born a few days ago… wait. If Gobias proposed to Dorie only recently, then that meant Diana persuaded Gobias to cheat on Dorie the night Allison was conceived.

Gobias couldn’t know. Dorie couldn’t know. Gobias deserved a chance at happiness, and Diana wasn’t going to get in the way this time.

The kitchen suddenly felt like it was closing in on her, and Diana knew a better place where she could think in peace. The beach. Diana remembered coming out here so long ago while she was pregnant with Charlie.

So much had changed and yet so much hadn’t. Diana had a comfortable home, a great career, and two wonderful children. What hadn’t changed was that Gobias clearly didn’t want anything to do with Diana once again. How had she wound up right back where she started? It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

Wow, EXCELLENT chapter! I just laughed so much at Charlie saying "You got me a baby sister for my birthday? That's so cool!" He sounds just like a kid. I love the complicated relationship between Gobias and Diana. Great job!

I've been reading since this story started...and I have to say Charlie looks like a much younger, more handsome version of Gobias.

Thank you for all the lovely comments! Apples, someone told me a story where their kid had thought the same exact thing, and I thought it was very appropriate for this story, haha.

Ch. 7: Regret

Diana didn’t know how she was going to keep Allison a secret. She would have to go to school at some point. Agnes already knew about her, and so did Claire and Angel. It was only a matter of time.

Charlie’s prom was coming up. Diana wasn’t too surprised to find out that he had asked Angel to go with him. It would be crazy if they didn’t end up together at this rate. Or were they already?

Diana threw a small party for Allison’s toddler birthday with just herself and Charlie being the attendants. There was a cake that only Charlie seemed to enjoy, but Allison grew up to be a cute little girl with surprisingly brown hair. She got Diana’s golden eyes, though.

As had been done with Charlie, potty training was the first thing Diana did. Allison was smart and caught on very quickly.

Oddly enough, the family member that Luke seemed to bond with the most was Allison. He would frequently sniff her and then run away whenever she stretched her arms out. She couldn’t walk just yet, so Diana found great entertainment in watching them play on all fours.

Charlie’s prom came and went. He was excited to go, but he was just beaming when he came home. He told Diana that he had finally gotten up the nerve to ask Angel to go steady with him. And while they were on the dance floor, Angel gave him his first kiss. It turned out to be her first kiss too. Diana was grinning with pride. Her little Charlie was a young man now!

This time around, teaching Allison her skills was very easy. Diana was no longer short on cash, and her work hours were much more flexible. Diana even took a day off to spend with Allison. After potty training, Allison learned how to talk.

Then Diana taught her to walk. Again, this was Diana’s proudest moment of Allison’s toddlerhood, but Diana made sure to appreciate the times that Allison fell down and completely forgot what she was doing.

Just before Allison’s child birthday, the upstairs got a remodel, and the house started to look like more than a shack. Diana was doing it. She was providing for and supporting her two children on her own. She didn’t have a houseful of children like she really wanted, but she would learn to be happy with only two. And who knows, maybe the future has something else in store for Diana.

Indeed, the future did have something in store for Diana, and it wasn’t pleasant. Life threw Diana a real curveball. Another rumor had gotten around town that Gobias had gone through with his marriage to Dorie, but what really got to Diana was that Dorie had a child just before she turned into an old woman.

So it turns out that’s the real reason Gobias and Dorie Hart got married. Dorie had gotten pregnant, and she did the exact opposite of what Diana had done. She married Gobias. Who would have thought? Diana tried her best to ignore the fact that her children now had a half-sibling who was remarkably close in age to Allison. Rage welled up inside Diana. How dare Gobias have a child with another woman! How dare he commit to someone else! And how dare he not tell her!
But then Diana felt the hypocrisy poking in at the back of her head saying, Well, you didn't exactly want to commit to him, and you didn’t tell him about Allison.

It was wrong of her to keep Allison a secret. She should get the same treatment as Charlie did. Diana picked up her keys before she headed out the door. It was time to pay Gobias a visit.

Even though Gobias only lived a few short minutes away, those minutes were enough for Diana to get worked up. Gobias had done more wrong than she had, and he needed to own up to it. When Diana arrived at Gobias’s house, he invited her in as always, and Dorie was notably absent from the house. And as always, Diana went into the conversation angry.

“You disgust me Gobias,” said Diana who skipped any sort of introduction. Gobias was used to this by now. “Why did you marry Dorie?”

“Not this,” pleaded Gobias, “Please not now, Diana.”

“What? Why should I spare you my piece of mind? You don’t deserve it.”

“No, I don’t,” replied Gobias. “Look, Dorie and I never got married. I proposed when she found out she was pregnant, and then she found out you’d had another child. She called off the wedding.”

“So she figured out you were sleeping with me at the same time you were sleeping with her,” Diana triumphantly pointed out.

Gobias looked tired. “You just don’t get it Diana, do you?”

“Get what? I think you’re the one who doesn’t—”

“Diana,” Gobias interrupted. “Shut up. Just hold your tongue for one moment and let me talk.

“I have put up with your antics long enough. When we first met, I thought you were a nice beautiful girl, and I was flattered that you’d wanted to spend your time with me. I should have known then that something was wrong with you. But no, it took me years to figure that out. Diana, I have offered you nothing but my support and my affection, and you have trampled all over me. Dorie was my last chance at happiness, and you took that away from me.

“You invited me to your house under false pretenses, and you told me you wanted to work things out. You told me we should try being together, but it was all a lie, and you know it. I didn’t know it. How could I really have been so naďve? I’d only just gotten together with Dorie and you threw that load of lies on me, and I just bought right into it. I didn’t have an obligation to Dorie like I do you, so when you told me we could work things out, I knew I couldn’t be with Dorie. I was okay with that though, because I would be able to be with my son. After that night, you never called me. I tried to call you and you ignored my calls.

“Imagine how surprised I was when the next call I got was from Dorie telling me she was pregnant. I knew right then that you had no intentions of being with me, and that’s when I knew I never wanted to be with you nor could I ever be with you. I was going to do things right with Dorie and raise my son, but you ruined that for me. You invited me over specifically to get pregnant and you deceived me. Now you’ve had a daughter that I’m never going to meet, and I’m going to die here alone in my big house without my three children, whom I don’t even know.

“You’re a parasite, Diana,” concluded Gobias. “There’s nothing left you can take from me so you need to leave. Now.”

Diana left. Before her car door even shut, she burst into tears. Gobias was right. She was nothing but a parasite. How had she deceived herself into thinking she’d been doing the right thing all along? When it was all laid out there… all plain for the world to understand, Diana turned out to be nothing but selfish.

Diana shouldn’t have left that day. She should have apologized and told him she was sorry. But Diana started her car and pulled out of Gobias’s driveway for the last time. She never saw Gobias again because he passed away a few days later.

Diana couldn’t help but feel as though she had sucked the life out of him.
