Ch. 5: The Point of No Return

Charlie was one interesting kid. With a vivid imagination, he proudly ruled over his court while Diana made lecture notes for her class. Diana may look annoyed, but that’s because she couldn’t join him. She had work to do. She especially had to make sure her class got good marks on this last test. It would determine whether she would get that bonus in the fall.

Among Charlie’s other interests was painting. He didn’t pain very often, but when he did, he came up with surprisingly nice paintings, especially for a young child.

Charlie was still at the age where going to school was fun, and Diana made sure he made good grades by helping him with his homework. She would sometimes have to interrupt him from ruling his court at the table, but Charlie didn’t complain too much.

Charlie’s other interest was the girl next door, Angel. She grew up to look quite like her mother, and Diana thought she was a cute child. The two of them were constantly going back and forth to each other’s yards, playing tag.

Claire phoned Diana one day when she found Charlie and Angel poking out from behind some bushes in her lawn. Claire would have been worried if they were teenagers, but they were just kids.

Diana had to wonder if being “just kids” even mattered these days. With young adults having babies, and teenagers having sex, maybe kids were having relationships. Diana didn’t spy by any means, but she kept an eye out the kitchen window on the evenings that they were outside together in the dark.

They were just being kids. Phew.

Later in the week, Claire had a house party. Charlie and Diana, along with a few other neighbors were invited. “Dee!” called Angel. That’s what she called Diana. Personally, Diana loved the nickname. It was so simple, like the spirit of a child.

“Hello, Angel!” replied Diana. “How was your day?”

“Ugh, school was awful. I wish I had you instead of Mrs. Allen.” Angel picked up a ball from the yard. “Wanna play catch?”

Diana smiled wide. Even though she was in her best dress, she couldn’t turn down interacting with such a sweet child. “You bet!”

Angel couldn’t decide if she wanted to pretend she was throwing a cake or if she wanted the ball to be a baby that you “couldn’t drop ever!” The ball was usually a cake when she dropped it, but it was always a baby when Diana dropped it.

“Dee! Stop dropping the baby!!” shouted Angel. “You’re not supposed to drop babies!”

“Well why is it always a baby when I drop it? Can’t I drop a cake?” asked Diana.

Angel’s reply was, “Well, only I drop cakes. You catch them.”

Diana just laughed and told Angel she was going to go inside and say hi to Claire. Charlie would be over in a few minutes, and if she just couldn’t wait, she was free to go over to their house and drag him over.

Claire was still preparing some snack food. Not all the guests were there yet, but Monika Morris had shown up a little early.

Since Claire was occupied, Diana took it upon herself to entertain until Claire was finished with the snacks. It didn’t take long and soon the other guests started to show, but Diana hated it. What kind of person do you have to be to genuinely enjoy this? Letting people into your home to feed them your “famous” cheese dip that tasted only okay. Getting all dressed up just to go and talk. Pretending to care about what everyone has to say. Taking a sudden interest in the weather when there was an awkward silence… It was all just so fake to her.

A real party was inviting all of your kid’s friends over and playing tag in dirty old jeans. Tossing a Frisbee and getting it stuck on the roof. Climbing a ladder to get the Frisbee and ripping those comfy jeans. Eating plain hotdogs. That was real.

Diana excused herself from the party. She had a phone call to make.

Gobias arrived at her house ten minutes later. He was surprised to learn that Charlie was next door and that he and Diana were alone. She invited him inside.
“Look,” said Diana, “I can’t stand this disdain I have for you. I hate how I don’t know why I feel that way.”

Gobias started to reply, but Diana cut him off, “I want to try to work this out. I’m not the one who should say whether or not Charlie’s father should be around. And you’re not the one who should refuse. For Charlie, we need to be together. We need to be his parents.”

“We don’t have to be together to be his parents,” said Gobias. “We should be amiable with each other, but there’s no need to force us together. I can come get Charlie on the weekends, and I’ll make sure I’m here whenever you want me. You saw just now, I showed up ten minutes after you called me.”

“That won’t work!” said Diana hastily. “Charlie shouldn’t be pulled this way or that. He shouldn’t have to choose where to go, and he shouldn’t like one of us better than the other. He shouldn’t have to compromise his time. He’s a kid! He should be doing exactly what he wants, not what we want.”

“Diana, this is all about what you want,” replied Gobias. “If this is what you think we should do, then we’ll try it out.”

“So you forgive me?” asked Diana.

“Of course,” said Gobias. “You’ve only been trying to do what’s best for Charlie.”

Yes, what’s best for Charlie, thought Diana.

She suggested to Gobias that they go outside and just talk. Learn each other’s favorites like he had said earlier. They talked and talked, and Diana found herself somewhat entertained. It was more than she expected.

It was starting to get late when Claire called Diana telling her that Charlie fell asleep on the couch while watching tv with Angel. Diana consented to letting him stay the night there. He’d stayed over there before, so it wasn’t a big deal. That’s when Diana encouraged Gobias to move inside.

Diana mustered up all the charm she had, down to her pinkie toe. She’d gone too far to go back now. Her ultimate goal was just on the horizon.

Gobias’s words echoed in Diana’s mind, Diana, this is all about what you want.

Gobias had no idea just how true those words were.

Another nooboo on the way! She must be so happy it is all she want. Hope she cope with two kids alone. Perhaps she will accept help from Gobias now.
