Blue Screen of Death from a mirror!?
« on: March 09, 2012, 08:21:15 PM »
I was placing the new $90 mirror from Showtime, when my screen went black. I thought "Oh, I've had this before, it goes away". But it didn't, instead, my whole system crashed to a Blue Screen of Death.  >:(
I am patched to 1.32, and I did remove my Mods (MasterController [plus the Cheats module], Overwatch and WrittenWord, all from twallan) from my game before doing so.
So I lost about an hour's worth of work with my first Showtime game.

I am running Windows 7, and I have all EP's up to and including Showtime. I also have HELS and FLS. My last uninstall/reinstall was around August last year, but I have done a Factory Reset recently.

Any ideas on how this happened, and how I can prevent it in future (without ErrorTrap, as I am still learning about Core Mods)?

Do you have reflections on?  I used to get game crashes from having mirror reflections on.

Have done the DEP exclusion on your TS3W.exe?

Instructions are here in case you need them: http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Data_Execution_Prevention/TS3W

When you said you removed your mods, did you also update them for the new patch?  Sorry if this is obvious but just making sure.   :D

Yes, I do, but this has only happened twice now, and I've always had them on.

I've never needed to do DEP, and the crash hasn't happened again, despite me playing for several hours straight now. But if it does reoccur, I will do DEP.

And I have updated them, I just keep forgetting to install them. Lol.

I've had a similar problem but no blue screen. I tried to place a mirror, game crash. Restart, place mirror, game crash. I soon figured out that it was the game crashing when it saw the reflection. I could place the mirror without crash so long as I couldn't see the reflection. It was bizarre, and I'd never had the problem before, but I'll tell you I just waited two sim days after loading the game, and the mirror placed fine. It just seemed to be a problem for that in-game time.

Had a similar problem when placing new Showtime lots in Appaloosa Plains recently. The screen just went black and then showed me a blue screen of death. Nothing new though, had this occur several times with other games including The Sims Medieval.

Just a little annoying.

Sorry for the dumb question, but what happen after a blue screen of death? I've never experienced it? :-[

Well, Windows just shows you a blue screen with lots of writings on it (information about why it had to do it), and then the only choice you have, or that I'm aware of, is to unplug your computer and/or take out the battery of your laptop -- in short, force-shut down the computer.

Thanks Wednesday21. If a mirror does that to me I will turn off all refections. :o

Nope. Sometimes (all the time for me), the computer will reboot itself. Now a black screen of death is more serious. THAT requires a forced shutdown.

Lol Seabody! Now you let me ask what is a black screen of death?  :P I have had a few crashed to desktop with my old card. I'm such a idiot with technical stuff, but not with the actual playing of sims thanks goodness!

I wouldn't know. It's not like that for me. Maybe it's different for different OSs (I'm still on XP) or computer models.

I've heard this is to do with the latest patch and that even people without Showtime get this. This is precisely what is stopping me from going anywhere near the latest patch - I know it technically isn't a gamebreaker but my laptop is as horrible as it is without me risking random screens of death here and there. My laptop is on it's elder stage, people! And there is no ambrosia for laptops! :P

A Black Screen of Death is virtually the same thing, except instead of a Blue Screen, the screen is Solid Black. And when the computer reboots, you get a message that the system has recovered from a serious error. I've only had it once, with Sims Medieval.

I wouldn't know. It's not like that for me. Maybe it's different for different OSs (I'm still on XP) or computer models.

??? I got my first Blue Screen on XP. And it automatically rebooted. It was an HP.
