Placing items in a "museum"
« on: March 05, 2012, 03:43:41 AM »
I'm not 100% sure this thread fits here, but it concerns features for community lots, so I guess this somehow fits.

I wanted to build something like a museum, along with a souvenir shop (which is why I chose the lot type "Consignment store"). My sim already has all the relic collections, along with all types of metals and gems (cut and smelted in all possible types). Now I want to place these on the lot I built. I already have all the display stands and cases placed, so all I need is to place the items.

I tried two different things: 1. Simply dragging the item from the sim inventory and placing it on the displays; 2. Clicking on the stand and using the "Donate..." option.

I remember, a while ago, I tried these and the objects wouldn't stick there once I've moved the sim to a different lot, when buying/selling the community lot in question or when saving the lot to the library and trying to place it again in the same neighborhood or in a different one.

What I'm looking for is a way to place the items and make them stick there even if I decide to buy/sell the lot or if I decide to move/kill/change in any other way the family that collected the items. It would be downright awesome if I could save the lot to the library, then place it in a different neighborhood.

On the other hand, I'd like to do these with the relics I collected (I want the sims in the room to get the moodlet), not with the ones in buyDebug. And I have no idea how I could get all the cut, smelted and transmogrified objects from buydebug, because they don't appear there.

So, does anyone know of a way to do this?

As a sidenote - I have all games and SPs, along with lots of CC. I've also read about another option here, to make the lot residential, move a sim there, place the items, then move the sim away. I plan to try it in a couple of days, once I have some time. Did anyone try it? Does it work?

I cannot answer any of your other questions (perhaps someone else can, though), but this one I can at least partially answer.

This does work.  However, there are some items that the game just doesn't believe belongs on a community lot...and if you change it, the game will remove those items.  You'll get a warning that states that it will do this if you continue, and ask for confirmation before proceeding.  I've never tried what you're attempting, so I can't give any more of a specific answer.

Well, I found the way! Build the museum, make it a residential lot, move in the sim, place the objects you want to place, then move out (using the phone and with the option to "sell furniture"). Go to edit town, change the lot type (I chose Consignment store, since I have a "Souvenir shop" in the building). And the objects will stick there, including when saving the lot to the library and placed again in the neighborhood.

So, yay, I got a museum! (The objects I'm talking about are insects, metals, gems, both raw and smelted or cut, and relics; these should stick... I don't know about other things).

I was just about to point you to one of my posts about this! Glad you find the way  :)

There is another way that can be disturbing for some - take one Sim with all the stuff you want on community lot (had to be single sim household), drag and donate everything you want where you want it on existing community lot and then kill that Sim (triggering age transition is fast way for this). You'll get the "Game over or is it" message and an option to chose another household in town, while all the belongings of that killed Sim will remain where you left them.

Haha, that was my next option, if the one with the move wouldn't have worked! I actually don't need a particular sim in that household and I was thinking of splitting the household, get the unwanted sim with all the objects, and try what you've described. Luckily, this moving thing worked, so I can use that sim to do other stuff now!

Hmmmm.  Strange.  Ok, I built a museum for UC that never was used.  Too big and graphics intensive and too many items that could affect challenges.  It had several floors, a coffee shop, a bar, and an extensive garden.  One floor was for Egypt and had all the stuff you could find in buydebug and more.  Another was China, and so on.  I did not try to put in Sim created pictures or gems but I was planning on gems and possibly insects.  The stuff I did have there always stuck even though it was built in Edit Town.  Now I have to wonder if I would have to murder a poor, unsuspecting Sim to make the other items work!  One of these days I'll finish it and show it off, though I doubt anyone would ever want to download it!  It's a graphics nightmare.
What?  Grannies can't play games?
I speak perfect Nooblik, (and some Simlish)!

The problem with items "sticking" where they were placed pops up in some special cases, not all the time. I remember that the first time I tried, my sim was owner of the lot (owner of a community lot, as in, a property). I placed everything, then for some reason I sold the lot. When I did that, all the items I placed popped back in the inventory of the sim.

Also, if you just drag and drop stuff from the inventory (I tried it with not owning the lot), when you try to save the lot to library and place it again, those objects will not be there --- the second museum won't have them. And this was was interested me, because I tend to change the neighborhood every now and then (with the same legacy I save to library) and I'm way too lazy to actually start it all over again.

If you don't plan to buy/sell the lot or change neighbourhoods anytime soon, then I don't think you'll have issues.
