Head-scratching freezing on saving
« on: February 29, 2012, 12:34:37 AM »
Hey everyone! You may have noticed that I posted this same topic and deleted it. I thought the problem was fixed, but evidently not. I tried lowering my resolution. It's on the lowest resolution and it still happens. Here's the problem; my sims game likes to freeze while saving. It happens as if in clusters. For instance, if it happened today, it would happen about 9 or 10 times after that, and then just not do it for a week or so. Then it would freeze again. It's like an indefinite loop. I cleared DCBackup, and I cleared the caches, (yes, I use mods) but nothing I can do will cure it for more than 1 or 2 saves. The weird thing is that if you delete the .sims3.backup of the save you're using, it won't happen again until a new backup is made. Can they get corrupted? If so, how do you fix it? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times now, and every time is like a re-roll of different problems. Some problems are; Unicorns running with max racing skill will get wonky in animation, anything I make with create-a-style will mysteriously disappear, and the thing I'm telling you about. There are other things, but they're just minor compared to these. Any suggestions?

Does it happen on just save or does it also happen when you choose Save as?

When you save, your current game file because the .backup file.  So everytime you save it's changing the backup file.  I would suggest your next save be a save as and just rotate your saves like in a number.   I have files for my dynasty where every couple of saves I change the number so I have Artie 2.0, Artie 2.1, and so on up until Artie 2.19 and this way I also know that if something is corrupted I can go back to an earlier save and hopefully recover the file.

Not a bad idea, I'll try it. I'll get back to you.

It worked. Any idea why it would do that in the first place, though? It just piqued my curiosity.

Scratch that last post, it just did it again. This is weird. Ok, so I found out something new. If I named it with a decimal, it freezes. I wasn't doing that before, but then again, I wasn't rotating them either. I just tried naming it without a decimal, and no freezing! As far as I know, if you name it with a decimal, it reads everything after the decimal as an extension (as in .mp3, or .sims3.backup, for those who don't know :) ) How it doesn't on ricalynn's save is beyond me. Way to go, ricalynn! Thanks for all your help! If this isn't solved, however, I will be back. Here's hoping it's all good! Thanks again!

I would suggest trying a Factory Reset.  But when you go into the new folder - do not put your old saves there.  Try a new game with new Sims in a brand new town and see if you still have problems.  It is very possible that you have corrupted this save to the point that nothing will help it.

Sorry for double post but I wanted to ask a quick question.  Are you certain that it's actually freezing and not just taking a while?  After a while in my old dynasty, it would take like 15 minutes sometimes and I could only imagine it was going to get worse the longer I played so I thought I would just mention this.

I wouldn't use any DOS characters in a save name - such as a decimal.  Use an underscore.  They are usually safe.

I have found with my game, and this could be pure coincidence, it tends to freeze on a save if I have a lot of save games in my folder.  Once I take some out, it seems to be ok.  I tend to swap around my hoods a lot so I do collect a lot of save games.

@Ricalynn; Funny you should mention that, I am doing 64 generations, one generation for each Lifetime Wish and job, but I am only on my third generation. Also, my red unicorns have a green tint to them... I just did a factory reset, (because of an unrelated problem, namely "Update Failed: Invalid File Found", but to no avail, I'm going to post a new thread on this. Thread is here; http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,9244.0.html) but I haven't been able to check it yet. Also, I never actually timed it, but I would notice it takes awhile, hit the windows key to get out of it, run task manager, and find out it wasn't responding. I wonder if maybe the first time it just froze on saving, and I corrupted the file by ending the task in task manager? Can you do that?

@Figwit; I agree 100% on the DOS characters thing. I only have 2 save files without rotating saves. I am in appaloosa plains, in a house I built myself, but I built it before it started doing this. Although, it is a huge one. Once I get my game updated, I will try and experiment with Sims, and see if I can get it up and running. If not, I'll at least know more about the problem. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess the worst that could happen is I have to re-install, right? And it's not like I haven't done that before! :P

It appears that the update solved it. How? I don't know. Although, I noticed one of my mods was out of date. I just didn't bother transferring it over from my factory reset. I heard that mods can do that. I guess now I know for sure. Thanks everyone! If this happens again, I'll let you know! :)
