"NPCs" in non-rabbit-hole jobs
« on: February 23, 2012, 11:59:56 AM »
Hello folks. I'd like to know if Sims in uncontrolled households will properly work in the new non-rabbit-hole Ambitions careers. I've been googling for the answer to that question but haven't been able to find anything which frustrates me since I feel I'm overlooking something obvious. There are Sims I don't intend to play actively but still care for, and whose backgrounds suggest that being self-employed would be the natural choice for them. But I've never seen a Sim from an uncontrolled household do any gardening for example, in fact any plants on their lots seem stuck in whatever growth stage they were originally in.

EDIT: I should probably add that I play with Story Progression off, if it makes any difference, but am willing to give it a shot.

I think I get what you're saying. Are you asking if sims will progress through a profession's (inventing, sculpting, gardening) levels while you're playing a different household? I can't say that I've ever paid much attention to something like this, since I usually play only one household, but I can tell you that nothing will happen if you have Story Progression turned off. Try turning Story Progression on and see what happens.

No, uncontrolled Sims do not actively seek out joining professions like angler, gardener etc via EA story progression. (at least not in my experience) You can try switching between households and assigning them those jobs at the town hall and then going back to your family and seeing if the newly assigned Sims do their jobs.

You probably won't see them doing their jobs if you were to watch them closely.

However EA Story Progression will simulate giving them promotions, just like any other career.

I haven't seen NPCs progress much. I've seen them switch jobs (someone who was a bouncer, became a mixoligist); but, they don't seem to rapidly progress.
Also, for townies, they seem to be stuck in their jobs. They may progress a little; but, you'd think vampires would already be at the top!

Thanks all. I thought I'd read somewhere that the Ambitions careers, both the new jobs and the self-employed options, don't work for uncontrolled households, but I couldn't find confirmation of that again. I'll try manually assigning a test Sim or two to one of these careers, make sure they have the items they need on their home lot, and try to see if they end up making any money from their new job while I play another household.

Townies will work at the salon and if you have a firefighter he will have co workers. But a self employed painter or inventor will not advance in their career. Sims don't sell paintings or schulpters on their own. They will also not advance as a self employed writer.

However, as a painter I've seen paintings for sale at the consignment shop. Too bad they don't say whose painting it was.

Those are paintings from sims "outside of town", inactives do not sell paintings there under EA Standard.

Essentially the objects you see listed are fake (unless your active household are selling them), a means of making the consignment store look more lively.

Once you've bought the paintings from the consignment shop it says who made it.  In Sunset Valley, in a new game, it's almost always one of the townies.   I've bought paintings from Gunther Goth, Thornton Wolff, Jamie Jolina and Nancy Landgraab from the consignment shop.   If it's one of the people who die early you can sometimes hold the paintings from the consignment shop and wait until they die then resell those paintings for a lot of cash since the painter is dead.

Cool, that's a nice touch, adding the name like that.  I was unaware that EA was doing such.

It is still simulated though, the sim in question did not actually go through the effort of making the object and selling it at consignment. :)

That's a shame, really. It shouldn't have been so hard to simulate some kind of work-progress in these careers for Sims in uncontrolled households.  :(
