Breeding elder dogs?

Hi :).

I have an elder female and an elder male dog in my family. When I select the female and click the male I have the option to try for puppies.
Does anyone know if this works?
I don't want her to have puppies right now, so I'd rather not try it. :P

I guess I'm just curious as to the fertility of elder, female dogs :).
