Chapter Six: In Which Kitee's Life Changes

Where could Ransom have gotten off to now? I've searched everywhere for him. He's not in the graveyard, not around the science facility, not at any of the usual haunts... if you'll pardon the pun.

Finally I decide to go to my lot. He's there, of course; waiting for me.

"I was worried!" I say angrily. "What were you doing just standing here?"

"I've been thinking about it, Kitee." He sighs and rubs his head. "I'm sorry I shouted at you. You were brave when I wasn't, so thank you. It's not that I didn't want to come back. I was just afraid to, and to have it happen all of a sudden... it's confusing, and kind of scary."

"You're a ghost," I grumble. "It's your job to scare people."

He grins and strokes my cheek. "Do I scare you?"

"Can't say that you do," I say. "I'm pretty much used to ghosts. It's not easy to surprise me anymore."

"Let's see what I can do about that."

We go to dinner that night. People don't seem to mind his presence much.

"I can't believe this bistro is still here," says Ransom. "Not much has changed in all these years."

"How many years?" I ask.

He seems to think about it for a moment. "Dunno. Longer than I've managed to keep track of."

"And yet you're so modern."

"I guess it comes from occasionally popping back into the world of the living and eavesdropping on conversations."

We sleep at 599 Skyborough Boulevard that night. The bed's so comfortable I'm almost considering ditching the stone bench for it. Almost! Not quite. I'm still an adventurer.

It's so homey to wake up and find Ransom paying the bills, though.

I can almost see myself doing this every day. Suddenly I wonder if Ransom will want to live in the cemetery with me or get an actual house. We haven't really talked about it.

Then I remember the other thing I was going to tell Ransom, and it's more important.

"Good morning," I say. "Sleep well?"

"I slept! I even had a dream. This is so exciting."

I grin at his enthusiasm. "How about another fun thing for today?"

"What did you have in mind?"

"Your wife mentioned that you were worried about your family. Are you ready to see the people you love again?"

He seems a little disconcerted. "How will I find them?"

"I already did. Actually, they live just down the road. 306 Skyborough Boulevard. What a coincidence, don't you think?"

"Jennie and I built that house." He gets a far-off look. "I wonder if it's still the same."

"Let's find out."

We head down the street to the house, but there's no one in so we wait outside for someone to get home. To tell the truth I don't know what we'll find. Will Xander be a complete disappointment?

But Ransom's giddy with excitement. "They expanded the upper story," he says, and proceeds to point out everything that's changed.

After listening to him ramble on for a while I smile and say, "Isn't this worth the whole science facility ordeal for?"

"All of it," he says earnestly. "This and you. You're both worth it."

At that moment a school bus pulls up and a little boy hops off. He doesn't even blink when he sees Ransom.

"Hi," he says.

"Hi. I'm Ransom Clavell. What's your name?" Ransom asks.

"Ransom Clavell? That would make you my great-grandfather!" says the boy with a laugh. "I'm Gilberto Clavell. Pleased to meet you." He shakes Ransom's hand. "Come inside."

I follow a bewildered Ransom into the house, feeling better about this whole thing. If Xander's raised such a nice boy he can't be that bad. It also means he's taking some kind of responsibility. From Jennie's description I expected a complete slacker.

"So how come you're my great-grandfather?" asks Gilberto once we're inside. "I thought you were dead."

"I am," says Ransom. "I'm a ghost. But I came back to see you and your dad."

"Oh, okay. That explains it."

I stand off to one side, watching them happily as they chatter about Gilberto's school, friends, and activities as if they've known each other their whole life.

But suddenly I get a horrible wave of nausea and have to run to the bathroom. Urgh! Did I eat something bad last night?

When I come out I see that Xander's arrived. He seems a little shocked by Ransom's appearance.

After a little reassurance from both Ransom and Gilberto, though, Xander accepts Ransom's presence there and even seems to be pleased to meet his grandfather. He doesn't remember him when he was alive, so this is a rare treat for him.

Ransom's super excited to talk to his family, but he notices I'm not feeling that well and says we have to go. We head over to the gym to shower, eat, and go to the bathroom. Ransom provokes a few strong reactions.

Halfway through my bowl of canned soup I realize something I should have realized earlier.

I head over to where Ransom stands by the pool to tell him, halfway between excited and nauseous again, but he looks so sad I pull up short. "What's the matter?"

"I can't stop thinking about the day I drowned," he says. "I wish I'd had more time to live."

"You have time now," I say.

He sighs. "Yeah. I guess you're right." He looks at me and raises his eyebrows. "Why did you change your clothes?"

"Because I'm pregnant!" I burst out.

"Kitee, that's great!" He seems to really mean it. "I can't believe it. I'm going to be a father again!"

"So it's good news?"

"Of course it is!" He leans over and addresses my stomach. "Hello, you in there. Your daddy's a ghost. Don't freak out, okay? I'm still pretty normal, transparency aside. So try to be accepting of your old man. Will you?"

"He says 'of course I will,'" I say. "He's going to love you, Ransom. He won't care you're a ghost."

"No, I'm not worried about that. But there's another thing I should do." He drops to one knee and pulls out a ring.

"Ransom!" I squeal. I've never been the type to squeal, but he caught me completely by surprise. When did he get a chance to buy a ring? Where did he keep that huge box? Wouldn't I have seen through his pocket, since it's solid and he and his clothes aren't? Who cares! He's asking me to marry him, not to give a rational explanation for this crazy, crazy thing I call my life.

"Marry me?" he says.

"Of course!"

He slips the ring onto my finger. It's a perfect fit, and so sparkly!

A few days ago I thought I couldn't possibly be happier than I was. I've just proved myself wrong.

Thanks for the support, guys! You make me so happy to write more. ;D

Oh my God she's pregnant and engaged! I wonder if it will be a ghost baby. Oh, and I think Kitee looks good in pink.  :D
If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0.

Chapter Seven: In Which Kitee Becomes a Mom

I know, right? A mom? I never thought I'd be one. I don't think of myself as someone capable of being a mom. I'm a bit nervous throughout my pregnancy, especially since I don't know what to expect. What will the son or daughter of a ghost and a woman be like?

But Ransom's amazing, so I don't complain. Remember how I wished he could come fishing with me? It turns out he's a loner, too, and we enjoy casting our lines far enough apart to feel happily alone, but close enough to see each other.

It's so nice doing everything together.

And he gives me amazing massages that relieve the back pain a lot.

That's when I freak out when I go into labor and he's not there. How can I do this alone?

Fortunately Ransom shows up and acts like a steady, calm supporter... not really.

I have a home birth (I don't trust hospitals) and a few hours later Buster Bones is born! We decided to name him after Ransom's son, who's now dead and gone. He's not ghost-like in the least, which is a bit of a relief to me. In fact, I think he'll look just like me when he grows up.

We quickly settle into our new routine. We set up a crib in the graveyard where Buster can sleep while I fish.

It turns out a graveyard is as good a place as any to set about raising a baby.

One night while changing Buster's diapers I realize I'm pregnant again! I barely had any nausea this time, so it took me by surprise. A pleasant surprise, though. I'm not worried at all.

Ransom's just as cool with it as I am. That night he picks up the guitar I reeled in from the pond and strikes up a tune. He's never played the guitar before, but he gathers a crowd of ghosts. I never would have guessed, but the graveyard kind of creeps him out. This is a good way to keep his mind off the graves and ghouls. Never mind he's a ghost himself.

Buster isn't fussy, but he's loud, and wakes us both up several times in the night. Ransom gets upset when the ghosts make the crib float, but I really think they're just trying to help.

We finally both get some sleep toward early morning. Good thing I'm used to sleeping odd hours!

Ransom's kept in contact with his grandson and great-grandson. He even calls Gilberto every night to remind him to brush his teeth.

At first the other ghosts were somewhat intimidated by the new baby, but now I think Buster has endeared himself to them. I'm certainly not complaining about the extra help.

Unlike during my first pregnancy I'm not afraid to keep active until well into the home stretch.

As usual, Ransom's great and very attentive.

Buster's toddler birthday comes at the same time as I start to go into labor. There's even a bystander I've never met before to top off the craziness.

I finally get it together enough to head home, where after a few more hours of labor little Bessie Bones is born!

I should be freaked out but I'm not. It's only right that, since Buster looks just like me, Bessie should look just like Ransom.

I never thought I'd say this, but being a mother is the most wonderful thing I've experienced yet.

Thank you for reading! I hoped the first baby would be a ghost baby, too, but I'm happy with how things turned out. Thanks for the comments! Esther, I looked it up and, surprisingly, wonderer is a word! ;D

Congrats for the nooboos! :)

Thanks! I'm very excited. ;D

Is this your first ghost baby, Apples?

Yep. It's the first time I've controlled a ghost, too, so it's all new territory for me.

I don't know, but from what I've heard, I think so.

When is the next update going to come?

Hopefully later this afternoon. Sorry I haven't been updating lately, but I've been so sick I could barely sit up in bed. :( Much better now, though, so I'll get to work on updates!

Somebody can correct me if I am wrong but I think if you get Bessie to eat Ambrosia she will turn into a normal Sim.

I'm pretty sure that's the case; same goes for Ransom. But ghosts are fun to play with. :)
