Yeah, sorry about that! I know it's what I said originally, but the story... Got out of hand. Hehe. It won't be as long as my other stories though.

Chapter Eight: In Which Kitee Says Goodbye

We have our wedding at Crystal Springs one Sunday afternoon. Ransom arranged to rent it and invited everyone, so it takes me completely by surprise. He just invites Xander, Gilberto, and Bebe Hart, since neither of us likes crowds.

We say our vows, and exchange rings.

We share the traditional wedding kiss, in which the bride can be seen through the groom. Actually it's a pretty traditional wedding in most respects. Ransom counts both as something old and as something blue. (Don't tell him I said that!) We don't have any music, though. We both prefer the sounds of nature. And Ransom is wearing a tux, honest. It's kind of hard to tell with him, but he is.

We're married! I can't believe I just got married. All the nerves that were supposed to come before the big day hit me afterwards, since barely had time to think about it beforehand. I can't even listen to the conversations going on around me. Kind if like I'm in shock or something. I hear Ransom talking about me with Xander down below, though, and smile a little.

Everyone ends up having a good time at the party. Gilberto is an interesting young man, very charismatic and funny. He reminds me a bit of Ransom, actually. Maybe that's why they get along so well. He tells Bebe and me about the time he wore a box on his head.

After the wedding we head back to the cemetery, pay the babysitter, and check on the kids. Bessie looks different, but in my arms she feels just like Buster. Just a little baby, sweet and precious like any other.

Oddly, all the ghosts keep congregating around our area. The graveyard's a big place, but for some reason they all prefer to hang out close to us.

The next day I teach Buster how to walk. Ransom got a job in the law enforcement career track in order to support his family, so it falls on me to take care of the kids during the day. Not that I mind.

Buster looks just like me, except for his eyes. I don't know what Ransom's eyes were like, and he doesn't remember, so it's possible he got those big blue peepers from his daddy's side.

He's really hard to keep track of, always wandering off to adventure. If I take a few minutes for a little nap on my favorite bench, I can be sure Buster's gone off to hide in the bushes.

Ransom thinks the graveyard is a dreary, depressing place to raise children. I think Buster is the happiest little kid I've ever seen.

Ransom loves him so much. He takes him to the library sometimes to read books. They've gone through everything in the children's section by now.

But that night something unexpected happens. Jennie Clavell shows up again. Ransom's out having dinner with a few of his friends from work. Is it a coincidence that she pops up when he's not here or am I just being paranoid?

"Hi, Jennie," I say, not entirely enthusiastically. I'm still getting used to the idea of being married. A chat with Ransom's ex-wife... or whatever she is, isn't exactly what I need right now.

"Thank goodness I caught you."

"Why?" I ask, wary now.

"Ransom has to come back."

I stare at her for a moment. "What are you talking about?"

"Things are coming apart. Everything is frayed at the edges, and the ghosts are growing restless. You must have noticed."

"I saw Anabelle Oinkslopes levitating Buster's teddy bear the other night. Is that what you mean?"

"Buster?" She blinks. "You named him Buster?" She rubs her eyes. "No wonder. What's the baby girl's name?"

"Bessie."

"You named them after my son and his wife?"

"Ransom's son too, Jennie. I can call my children whatever I want."

"You clearly don't understand. Take a look at how things are right now. Buster Clavell has been dead for years. His grandson, Gilberto, is nearly grown. And now Buster has two half-siblings, children of a woman young enough to be his granddaughter."

I feel my facial muscles forming an expression I'm sure is not pleasant. "Why does it matter? What does it have to do with Ransom going back and all the ghosts?"

"It's an impossibility," she says firmly. "Buster was pushing the barriers of reality enough with his parentage, but at least he's human. Bessie is beyond the last drop. Look at her. She isn't supposed to be. That's a living child, and she's already a part of the netherworld."

"'Not supposed to be'? What kind of hypocritical statement is that? Look at you! You've been dead for a century and you're here talking to me!"

"The dead walk the earth, but not to take part in life."

"You encouraged me to bring him back! To be with me!"

"To enjoy his time with you. To meet his grandson and great-grandson. Not to have children." She steps back. "Ransom must return to the netherworld before true dark tomorrow evening. Any longer than that will disrupt reality beyond recovery, and you will be responsible for any damage that might occur. Not a person alive can say what will happen. All sorts of ghosts may walk the earth, and not all of them friendly. People might die. You yourself, and your children, will be in danger. Things will be drawn to you, things you certainly do not want to attract, because you are the origin of the disruption comes from your daughter. Can you have deaths on your conscience, Kitee?" She starts to fade.

"You're just jealous because we got married!" I shout. But she's already gone. Who knows; maybe she heard me anyway, but it doesn't matter.

How can she throw something like that at me? And how can I help but believe her? It's not like I'm an expert. Oh, what am I going to do? This is insane. Ransom can't go away.

I wake up the next day after he's gone to work, so I have to wait until he comes back. As I watch the sun crawl across the sky I get more and more anxious. What if Jennie's right and zombies invade the earth come nightfall or something?

Ransom arrives and I almost don't tell him. I love him so much. Who knows what will come of this?

After he hears what Jennie said, he sighs and shakes his head. "I should have known. I'm sorry, Kitee."

"So she's right?" My voice is very, very small.

"I'm afraid so. I was so in love with you I didn't think, and now I'll have to leave. But we'll be together again. I won't be gone forever, Kitee, not by any means."

"What about Buster and Bessie? I can't look after them by myself!"

He thinks about it for a moment. "You can move in with Xander and Gilberto. They'll help you, and you can raise them in a real house instead of in a graveyard. The kids can get to know each other, and grow up together. They'll know the house Jennie and I built."

"But how can I do it without you?"

He touches my cheek. "You'll do fine. You're strong, and always have been. I'll wait for you in the netherworld, and one day we'll all be together again."

"You don't have to go just now, do you?"

He smiles. "No. This afternoon we can spend together."

After making arrangements with Xander and Gilberto, who are more than happy to let me into their house and babysit the kids for a few hours, Ransom and I go and spend some time alone. But it goes by so quickly I barely notice it, and the sun is setting, and we have to hurry to get back to the cemetery in time.

"Look after the kids," says Ransom.

"You're not going to hook up with Jennie, are you?"

"I'll wait for you on the other side. Just promise me you'll live a full life before crossing over, okay?"

"I promise," I whisper.

We share one last kiss as the sun sets and darkness begins to fall.

Then Ransom pulls away and he's gone in a puff of blue smoke.

His tomb has appeared in the same place it used to be. Only now it's facing a slightly different direction. Almost like it's giving its back to Jennie's tomb. Facing my bench. Waiting for me.

I cry over Ransom's grave like I did the first time I saw it, before I even knew who he was. I guess I've always known in my heart I would love him.

But in the same way I know now in my heart that what he said is true, and we'll meet again on the other side, and I'm not as sad as I thought I would be. It's just temporary, after all, the way everything is, except for love.

Sorry for making you wait, and thank you for reading and for your comments! I anticipate there will be another two chapters or so, but not much more than that. I have other projects I'm starting, and this was supposed to be a short story, after all. ;D

Hey sorry for posting again, but here's a video I uploaded of Kitee reading a book in the cemetery while a ghost shakes her bench. It happened a while ago but I was only able to upload it now. ;D

Awwwww...I can't believe Ransom had to go. And Kitee living anywhere but a graveyard? This was an awesome chapter! I hate to see this story come to an end, it has been so amazing from the start!  :D

Thanks so much for the comments, guys! I'm sorry I made you cry. I hope the last two chapters make up for it. :)

I'm having trouble getting to the point where I can post chapter nine, because there's a lot of playing, and my game file is buggy. I won't post a chapter today, but I will give you a small update.

Bessie aged up to toddler, and learned all her skills from Kitee.

She and Buster were happy toddlers. They shared a room in the remodeled Clavell house.

Buster aged up to child. Gilberto would sometimes help him with his homework. Gilberto doesn't figure as part of Buster's family, but Xander appears as Buster's nephew, which is pretty funny since he's an elder now.

Bessie also aged up to child. She's already planning to become a doctor and is doing well in school.

I hope I'll get up the last two chapters later this week! ;D
