It is good to know that Alton's clothing lead a happy life. He is rocking the caveman suit that is for sure.

Part Two, Chapter Thirteen

Everyone who looks at Jasper wants to play peek-a-boo with him, and his big brother Alton is no exception.

Alton went to his prom the other night. Apparently, there are no girls attending Celestial Community at the moment, so it was quite calm – no hurt feelings, no fights. Alton was named Prom King. The worst thing that happened to him was that someone else showed up in the same outfit. It must be the year of the caveman.

Since Deuce works evenings, and Alfredo is the consignment shop specialist, they haven’t been able to spend much time together. But they arranged to meet in the Appaloosa Plains park to watch the stars together.

“You know,” said Deuce, “I’ve completed my black ops, and I’m almost at the top of my career. In a few days I’ll become an adult. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“No,” said Alfredo. “What’s a black op?”

“It’s an opportunity that – oh, never mind. Alfredo, will you marry me?”

And even though he was exhausted, Alfredo still managed to do the “ooh-shiny-thing” happy dance.

Jasper had his first birthday the next morning.

His favorite color is yellow, so he got a new outfit.

Deuce set about teaching him the basics – how to bow to an audience.

Chapter Fourteen

One evening Deuce realized she was no longer a young adult but an adult sprinting towards elder.

She wasn’t married. She didn’t have any children. She hadn’t reached the top of her career yet. She hadn’t become a super athlete. She didn’t have many friends. It was more than enough to send her into a midlife crisis. Still when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Deuce set about making friends, although miming a conversation with oneself might not be the best method.

She reached the top of her career, and achieved her dream of becoming a Master Acrobat.

And finally, only a couple of days after that terrible birthday, Deuce clocked in her last minute of strength training. Alfredo was spending the night, and they were on the verge of getting married when tragedy struck. The Grim Reaper came for the little stray dog (not the one that Deuce was best friends with) who was swimming in their ornamental pool. Deuce had never realized that the Grim Reaper could walk on water, but she wished he could have waited until the wedding was over.

After that, Alfredo was too upset for a wedding, and he went home. The next day Deuce called him, but he didn’t want to come over, and he didn’t want to go out. She looked all over town for him and couldn’t find him. Then she looked again and realized that he had become an elder. Could that explain why he was avoiding her? She went to his house. It was distressing to see someone who had always been younger than she walking with a cane, but Deuce went ahead with the wedding anyway.

She hustled him into bed as well. As she’d learned last night, you never knew how much time was left.

Part Three, Chapter One

Deuce occasionally wondered what kind of alien being had designed her new home. The lot was huge, but there wasn’t much living space.

You had to go up one flight of stairs to get to the living room.

At the far end of that area was the dining room.

Up another flight of stairs was the kitchen. Deuce thought the food would probably get cold by the time it got to the dining room, so she was glad there was a breakfast room nearby.

An open corridor led to the two bathrooms and bedrooms.

Deuce had a door put in connecting the two bedrooms so that she wouldn’t have to go outside to get to the baby.

She had been thinking a great deal about the coming baby, and the tasks it would have to face as the heir of a dynasty. Deuce herself was very grateful to her mother for providing a collection of statues. Deuce didn’t know what kind of collection she could provide, so she got a collection helper and went out to pick up rocks before the baby was born.

She found quite a few gems in the area of the old crystal mines and decided to return there periodically.

While Deuce was gone and Alfredo was painting, Mr. Pickles the cat decided to watch television.

This is what you get when cats watch the home shopping network.

At last the moment came for the baby to appear. “You!” Deuce screamed. “What did you do to me?”

“I’m sorry!” wailed Alfredo. “It was your idea! Why are you mad at me?”

“I’m not talking to you either,” Deuce said to the maid.

“But what did I do?” he complained.

The result was Drei, third heir of the Langerak decadynasty.

Part Three, Chapter Two

Life has been quiet in the Langerak household. Alfredo paints. “Eat your heart out, Georgia O’Keeffe,” he says. “Look at that view!”

Deuce brushes Mr. Pickles the cat and compliments him on the spotted beetle he just bought. (“You’d better thank me, sister,” purrs Mr. Pickles. “If it weren’t for me, you’d have a hard time paying the bills.”)

Yes, life has been quiet, but that’s about to change. Just as soon as we do something about that bald head.

After a visit to the mirror and the dresser, Drei gets her first meal in the high chair.

“Hello, little Drei. Are you a good girl?” Thus sayeth the Watcher.

   “No! I’m evil.”

“Really? Then why are you wearing white?”

“’Cuz it’s my favorite color, nitwit.”

The Watcher considers whether it’s wise to point out that this is hardly an appropriate form of address for the creator (and possible destroyer) of the known universe. The Watcher decides to bide her time.

“One of your ancestors was fond of white,” she remarks. “His name was Goodwin Goode, and you know what? He was good.”

   “Well, I’m evil,” says Drei.

“But that can change,” says the Watcher. “I think you’d find that you’d be happier if you were good.”

“Nuh-huh!” says Drei. “When you’re evil, people do nice things for you.”

“Why do you say that?” says the Watcher.

Drei tells about the time she had a wet diaper and let out a piercing screech, screaming and carrying on until she got some attention.

And how her father came hurrying into the room to see what was the matter, and how he then took her for a walk in the stroller.

“The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” says Drei, “and I intend to squeak a lot.”

The Watcher sighs. “I don’t suppose you’d be willing to stop being evil?”

   “No way,” says Drei.

“I’ll make a deal with you,” says the Watcher. “I’ll do what I can to help you become the Empress of Evil, if you promise me you’ll change your ways as soon as you reach the top of your career.”

“Why would I make a deal like that?” asks Drei.

“Because I can make you change whether you want me to or not,” says the Watcher.

“Isn’t that kind of an evil thing to do?”

“I didn’t say I was good, just that I wanted you to be.”

“So what can you do for me?”

“Make sure you get the genius  and workaholic traits. Help you develop enough athletic skill to advance. Help you become friends with the right – or rather, wrong – people. As ruler of this universe, I’ve got a lot of power.”

   “Well, okay.”

The Watcher can tell that Drei is trying to figure out how to renege on the deal, but that doesn’t bother her.

Chapter Three

Deuce finally got the chance of a lifetime to perform at the Hoi Polloi.

Unfortunately, the crowd was rather sparse. “Like a bunch of zombies,” Deuce muttered. “Still, the pay is good.”

Alfredo managed to catch sight of an inspiring sunset.

Now that he’s obtained the Multitab 6000, he can paint and learn about writing at the same time. He just might achieve his lifetime wish of becoming an Illustrious Author by the time he reaches 90.

Of course, the real person of interest in the Langerak household is Drei.  “Look into my eyes and obey my commands,” she says. “You will build me a place to play outside. You will not be able to sleep until you do this. You will not be able to eat. You will build me this place or die.”

And because Drei is a future empress of evil, her commands are obeyed.

But it’s not all fun and games for Drei. She has to learn some lessons, too. “Okay, if I hear the burglar alarm, I run away from the house I’m robbing. If I hear the fire alarm, I run towards the fire. Gotcha.”

Chapter Four

Drei has a few more lessons to learn before becoming a child. She has mastered walking, talking, and potty training, but there are some evil activities that only a toddler can do. Like decapitation. Which method is better ? Pulling off the head…

…or biting it off?

Drei also had to work on basic burglary. She started with breaking and entering…

…then checking to see if the coast was clear…

…before kidnapping Mr. Bunny.

Finally the day came when Drei was ready to assume the cares and responsibilities of childhood as a genius. “Da-ad! Yoo-hoo! I’m over here!”

Does this look like a child who would steal her father’s Multitab 6000?

Chapter Five

To answer the question raised in the previous chapter – yes.  “This is so cool,” says Drei. “I can play Sims City Social and contact my henchmen and –“

“You may use it to do homework and listen to logic tabcasts,” says the Watcher. “And that’s all.”

One day Princess Drei was feeling a little lonely. Sure she had a splendid castle and beautiful gowns with matching pointy hats, but she wanted more.

She wanted a subject. And because her wish was the Watcher’s command, one appeared.

Drei and Patterns soon became friends. They played tag and chess, and Drei told Patterns stories. “On a dark night, the moonscape is filled with snakes,” she began.

   “Oooh, scary,” said Patterns.

But Drei still wanted more. “I want Patterns to be real,” she told the Watcher.

“You can make it real,” was the answer. “Keep listening to those logic tabcasts and working at your chemistry lab and eventually you’ll get the right potion.”

“This is going to take forever,” Drei complained after working at the lab a few days. “Do you know how old I’ll be by the time I discover the potion?”

“There is another way,” said the Watcher. “Wait a bit, and maybe you’ll hear from the Perigee. Of course, you’ll have to go down there to get the potion.”

The Perigee was the most awe-inspiring – some might say intimidating – structure in Lunar Lakes. It was built around the rocket ship that Drei’s ancestors had landed in. The story was that it was haunted by the ghosts of schoolchildren who had gone there on a field trip and wandered away from their tour group.

The day came when she got a phone call from the Perigee saying that she needed to mail them a rainbow gem. Her mother had one for her, and Drei thought that was easy. But then she got another call saying she had to bring some money – right now – and pick up the potion. Drei wasn’t sure she wanted to go there at night.

“Watcher, can’t you just get the potion for me?” complained Drei.

“It doesn’t work that way,” said the Watcher.

“Well, can’t you make my Mom go? I know you make her do other stuff.”

“The only person who can get that potion is you, Drei.”

“I know, but I have to do homework.”

“It’s Friday night. You’ll have all weekend for homework. I might remind you that you’ll have to do some things that are scary if you want to become the Empress of Evil.”

So Drei trudged over to the Perigee. When she left the building, she couldn’t imagine what she’d been making a fuss about.

She was hungry, so she ate some supper first. Then she summoned Patterns and gave her friend the potion. Would Patterns be a he or a she? Drei really had no idea.

As the purple bubbles cleared, Drei saw that she had a new, real friend, someone she could do everything together with. “Except go swimming,” said Patterns. “I’m afraid of water.”

Even if the imaginary friend had been a boy Drei would not have been able to marry him as heirs have to marry a townie that lives outside the home plus nobody who has lived with the heir can move with them or live with them once they move.

Great update Marrian I love that Drei looks so anglelic but is so not.
