Yahoo Games Thinks Sims Should Be Retired

I was reading an article on what games they thought should be retired and at the very bottom was the Sims.  I was like  What?!
The writer of the article so doesn't get the game. 

Yes, the game has been expanded, but we the true fans understand why.  Any way, the article can be found at the link below.

What I find interesting is that a The Sims movie is mentioned at the end of th articale.  Wonder what that will be like.

Obviously understand (or play much) he doesn't if he thinks laundry washes itself in Sims 3, or any of the games!

I think he chose his words poorly.  He doesn't think they should stop coming out with Sims games (or says he doesn't), but the title of the article and its introduction make it sound like he does.  I think he's got a point.  It would be nice to spread things out a little.  No sooner do we learn what we need to know from one expansion pack than another is right on its heels.  As with other aspects of marketing and design, I don't think we as hardcore simmers are the target.  There's a whole world of people out there who probably have just the base game and one or two EPs.  They play casually and may buy the game, play awhile and never play again, but there are more potential buyers out there to attract and EA wants them.  Keeping up a constant flow of new material, expansion packs, stuff packs and now new towns assures that they're grabbing as much attention as possible.

My impression is that he needed something to write about, so he picked this.

Also, he's talking about sequels.  Sims 2 and Sims 3 are sequels to Sims 1.  Pets, World Adventures, etc. aren't sequels.  He says at the beginning of the article that it's better to leave customers wanting more, but then complains when EA does exactly that.  They made a base game but didn't include everything they could have.  They trickle it out to us, and every time we get just as excited for something new.  Can you imagine playing for the first time if ALL the EPs had been included with the base game?  I already bought the game, played it and put it aside for a year because it was so complex I didn't enjoy it.  Now add vacations, pets, professions, celebrities and all that.  Insane.

He also says sequels improve upon previous versions.  It's safe to say Sims 2 and 3 have done just that.

It sounds an awful lot like he's complaining about something good when it comes to the Sims.  Maybe his editor thought the article too short and told him to put something more at the end.

Even if they weren't before, they are now, why should any game quit simply because it's been around awhile, that's a good thing in the game world.

I highly doubt he is really a gamer since he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about for any of the games mentioned. I took a look at the comments for the article and it seems like a lot of people agree.

This is just another company trying to get people to stop playing a game they don't own. I used to play games on Yahoo and then the other peole playing became agressive, etc; there was no monitoring by Yahoo. Since I used to play a LOT on Yahoo, they have an aggressive marketing group that breaks into my Sims game! I have to hit the X box on the screen four times to get the thing to disappear.

To be honest, this article sounds like my co-workers who will never fully understand why I love the game like you guys do. I told them exactly those things, how I can get a career, do evil things, and get away with it, build my house etc. and you know what they told me? "I can do that in real life." Well guess what, Yahoo person who wrote this, I can also plant a money tree in my game.

All I have to say to that author is 'Pffft!'

To be fair, EA is pretty aggressive about releasing expansions and stuff packs, but I have yet to be disappointed by any of my purchases.  If anything, I love TS3 more now that I did when I started playing a year ago.  The EPs and SPs keep the game fresh.  That and the fact that there are just so many different ways to play this game keep me coming back.

The title of the topic came from what I saw on the Yahoo homepage.

Most of the comments I could read(sadly for some reason I couldn't post one), came from real gamers.  As I was reading the part about our game, I was like you don't know the game.  I doubt very much he has even really played it.

I posted on the comments there.  That guy is obviously an idiot. What he says makes it sound like those games are unpopular when they have a fan base of about 3 trillion times what he has. To say the most popular game in the world should retire is outrageous especially due to so many people playing it!

Wow, I just read that article. I even commented on it lol. The guy can't be a gamer. Plain and simple. I've never played 3 of the games he mentioned so I didn't say a word about those or the other one, as I haven't played it in years. But Sims is a different story. You're so right Jeana! I'm a mass murderer and guess what? I'll never ever go to jail for it. In real life you kill someone, ya go to jail. I'm shy in real life, but some of my sims are the life of the party! They dance on counters, woohoo a different woman every day (I know some people do that in real life, but I don't!), they are basically everything I'm not. And yeah, I bet he can't plant trees that grow money, but we sure can!! He needs to play a game before cutting down on people who love them.

Finally able to post a comment had to use explore instead of firefox.  I haven't planned any of the games expect Sonic a long time ago and of course Sims.  I love reading the comments more than the story.  To me that's the real story.  That guy had not done any research really.  Last I checked the Sims online was off line.  Not a good writer.  I mean I only took two media communication classes, and I could have written a better article.

Oh, he did some research.  He just doesn't understand that research is not the same thing as experience.  Not only is it not in the ballpark, it's not even part of the same sport.  He relied a lot on other people's opinions (game reviews) to form his own opinions for his article.  That speaks quite a bit about his actual experience (and obvious lack thereof) in gaming.

I've played Sonic, but not for years.  Yes, people are sick of him, but it's a kid's game primarily and is still incredibly popular.  For every gamer who grows out of Sonic there's another one or two who discovers him.  I'm very familiar with Dynasty Warriors, and again it's an incredibly popular franchise despite poor reviews.  Assassin's Creed, again, is insanely popular and despite the last one being the lowest rated game in the series still sold as well and was as well liked as any of the others.  Tony Hawk, at least, hit the mark...but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

Of course, I don't have to tell any of you about the Sims.
