Thank you.   ;D

'Sarine.' Clothilda said. 'They named the little green princess, Sarine.  She grew into a fine young girl but wild.

She had no time for learning magic with Primrose or Maleficent.

She spent her days with Hammet learning how to skin a rabbit or how to catch the biggest fish in the river.

She was dark of hair, like her mother, and smart like her mother too.

In time she grew to a woman, fell in love and married.  In time, too, she blushingly announced that she was to have a child.

Now Maleficent, was a proud and haughty witch but she had come to love Sarine as a daughter despite Sarine's rejection of all things magical.  Guilt plagued her mind because she knew that, through her curse, she had doomed Sarine to producing sons.

She had discovered some time previously that watermelon could be used in influencing the birth of a baby daughter however, it would take a very potent watermelon to overcome a curse.

So she bent her powers to producing a very special variety.  She studied the old texts and pored over her cauldron for hours, testing this and trying that.

Eventually, she was certain that she had the right seeds.  This variety required planting by moonlight and could only be harvested as the sun rose.

She was getting on in years now and her joints protested but she forced herself into her garden before the cock crowed each morning and picked a melon, freshly kissed by dawn's dew, and personally delivered it to Sarine's door each morning of her pregnancy.

Imagine Maleficent's delight when Sarine produced a daughter.

With not a little smug self-satisfaction, Maleficent inscribed her antidote into the family grimoire and smiled indulgently when Primrose proudly decorated the article with gold leaf and pictures of melons picked out in semi-precious jewels.

But she was wrong.

Hi, this is the first time I've commented on a story, but I wanted to say that I can't see the second, third and fourth pictures ??? ...is there a problem with that? But the story is really good and I love Lucy's character so much!  :) ;D

Thank you so much.  I love getting comments.  ;D

The pics are there for me.  Anyone else not see them?  Maybe they just take a while to load.  I am good at loading duplicates and then deleting the wrong one but I don't seem to have done that this time.  Not sure what the problem can be.

My apologies.  It was me and my evil deleting finger.  I should have thought to refresh the screen and then check.  Sorry everyone.  The pics should show now. ;)

All the pictures show up fine for me.

Yeah, the almighty watermelons. I suppose the effect of the curse will now be in that, that everyone will eat so many watermelons all of the newborns will be girls. It's never a win win situation!

What did they name the baby on Maleficent's hands in the last screenshot?

Thank you all.  Wednesday, that would have been a nice quirky idea.  I will put that in reserve for later stories.  ;D

Clothilda sighed deeply, her eyes sad behind her lenses.

The ghost hauntings continued unabated.  If Sarine's daughter had been a triumph of Maleficent's magic, then her presence did nothing to break the spell.

Maleficent ignored this.  She argued that other forces were at play.  She claimed that the ghost hauntings had nothing to do with her after all and anyone that bothered her again would be turned into a newt.

Years slipped by.  Maleficent shuffled off this mortal coil followed closely by her sister.

A new witch, Hazel, took over the practice.

She had little interest in expending energy on fixing something that was done before her time.

She bent her mind, however, to producing the ghostbuster gun, which brought the citizens much relief and earned her much praise by the Mayor and his councillors.

There were some who suggested slyly that Hazel's chief motivation was to rid her house of Maleficent's spectre, but nevertheless, the people were grateful and everyone got on with their business of producing crops and the next generation of children.

Another update because the last bit was a bit short.

'Where are you off to today?' Michael stopped Lucy in her tracks as she headed towards the stables the next morning.

'We have seen practically nothing of you all week.  You leave at first light and you are not home till late evening.  We are starting to worry.'

Lucy was surprised and rather touched at the concern in his voice.  She thought her brothers would have been happy to be rid of her.   Of course, he soon reverted to form.

'You have not done any schoolwork and the garden does not weed itself you know.  We all have to pull our weight around here.'

'I'll bet she's going to her boyfriend's.'  Gabriel had joined them, yawning sleepily and scratching at his chest.  Lucy wished he would wear a shirt.

'Your friend Justin was over here late yesterday.  I think he has the hots for you, Lucy.'

Lucy grimaced and wondered if Gabriel was really that stupid.

'As if.  The last time I saw Justin Cooke he cast doubts on my parentage.  He is the biggest loser in this whole backwoods excuse for a town – well apart from his brother John who is just as bad.'

She turned to Michael. 'I finished that assignment you gave me last night. I have printed it out and left the sheets on the coffee table for you to read.  I promise I will do the weeding when I get home tonight.'

'Well, we will see.' Michael looked skeptical. 'Anyway, don't take your horse.  Raphael thinks she is in foal.'

Lucy's jaw dropped. 'How did that happen?'

'You really don't know how horses get pregnant?' Gabriel smirked.

Lucy blushed. 'I do know.  I just don't see when it could have happened.'

'We think it was one of the wild horses.' Answered Michael. 'Raphael swears he saw a horse in the yard the other night.

'I don't know how it could have got in unless someone forgot to lock the gate,' He raised an accusing eyebrow at his sister. 'Raphael also said he saw some odd light effect too but put it down to an impending migraine.'

A foal.  Lucy's steps had an extra spring in them as she made her way on foot to Clothilda's house.  How amazing it was going to be to have a baby horse to pet.  She hoped Raphael knew what he was talking about.

Thank you.  I was pleased with that expression. She was actually under a spell that misfired but I thought it made a great pic I could use for the story.  :D
