Will This Laptop run TS3?
« on: December 28, 2011, 06:33:11 PM »
We're thinking of getting a new laptop as the current one I use for simming is on it's last legs (as those of you who read my legacy will know :P ) so we've been browsing a few online. I had a look at the thread for choosing a laptop but I'm all confused by that tech talk (xD) so if anyone could help me with deciding if this laptop we're currently considering would be a good choice or not, that would be awesome. :)
Here is the laptop we're thinking of purchasing:

http://www.brighthouse.co.uk/computing/15-point-6-inch-acer-laptop-gold-7/

My questions are: Will it run TS3 and if so, will it be good at running it? I.e: Will I be able to set it on high graphics and stuff? We really don't want to spend money on something that will just run the game like our current one does. :L

Thank you, anyone who answers. :)

It depends really, how many EPs and SPs will you want to install. Also a million patterns and store content.

Technically this laptop would perform fine, however it would be approaching the outer limits if another high performance EP was to be released. That said as long as you keep up with general maintenance and buy a cooling pad for an extra cost then this may actually work for you.

It's all about context when laptops are concerned, different models have different problems with overheating and/or power supply problems.

The things to look out for: at least 4gb ram (1gb dedicated graphics would be good too) but the more ram the better. At least a dual core processor. I have a high performing gaming laptop that still has a problem with getting really hot because I have all the EPs, no SPs and around about 1000 patterns installed lol.

I hope my crazy ramblings help you in some way.

Kindest Regards
KJ

This website doesn't seem to have all of the necessary information for me to make an educated decision. I know a few more techy sites so if you have a specific price range, I could definitely tell you a good laptop. I spent a loooooot of time researching for the one I have now, so I've learned a few things about computers, haha.

I'm currently running my 2-year old laptop on all low and medium graphics (apart from sim detail, which is high) that has 2GB memory, a few store items and all EPs and SPs installed sort-of okay. The only problem is overheating, but that should soon get fixed with a cooling fan. The graphics aren't too good either and it likes to lag a bit, as well as only letting me have one save file at a time. (That could be to do with one of my files being a legacy one with eight sims, though xD) What do you mean by power supply? Do you mean the battery? I'm really fine with it running out of battery quickly, it'll be connected to it's charger at all times while I play. :)

We found another site with a bit more info for that same laptop here:

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/acer-aspire-5742-refurbished-15-6-laptop-red-09743732-pdt.html?srcid=198&cmpid=ppc~gg~UFC-Laptop_-_Refurb~09743732~LT&mctag=gg_goog_7904_&gclid=CIbeg6KKpq0CFZMhtAodWC3Vug

Just scroll down and click 'product details' and it gives a lot of info. :) I don't have a price range, because it needs to be a pay-weekly site we're getting it from, like Bright House, so we can afford it. That's the only bad thing really, I'm looking for a good laptop but on pretty limited circumstances.

By power supply I actually meant the connector into the laptop. I had a Toshiba laptop and the adapter went into the side of the computer and one night the plastic inside the laptop broke so the connection disappeared into the laptop casing. It was simply remedied with a little superglue and it runs fine for work stuff but these are the little things that you have to be aware of when buying certain brands.

The only sane advice I can give to you is find a laptop that you like the look of and then find reviews for it. Two laptops with exactly the same specification can run in very different ways, this is because laptops are by nature little heat production units.

An overheating laptop is usually a very simple dust problem, if you do not feel confident fixing it yourself, it will be much cheaper to take it to a repair shop than to buy a whole new laptop. As your laptop is only two years old it may be able to be upgraded too, this will also be cheaper than buying a whole new unit and you can ask the repair shop for a quote on an upgrade.

I highly suggest a cooling fan, it doesn't necessarily have to be expensive or fancy, the point is merely to create a good airflow. A good airflow will actually extend the life of your laptop because overheating the parts inside is never wise.

Kindest Regards

Although I don't have any idea what makes a laptop great or not, I do know my laptop is good for TS3. I have All EPS and two SPS installed, and I am on Sim detail very high, other things high, and only the reflections as only mirrors. It doesn't glitch (As in stop every minute or so) and if I do get problems, a factory reset always does the job. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, and It's two years old. Great laptop  :D

I did get a cooling fan, have since I started playing the game, but they seem to stop working after two months or so and I've been having a lot of problems with getting the next one but hopefully we will get it tomorrow. It's just that our current laptop tends to black out a lot ever since it was attacked by a virus about a year or so ago and although the virus is out, it was never really the same. It's also quite broken in some places and to repair all of that would be a lot of money. I know it'd be cheaper in the long-run but we really can't pay money all in one go, that's why we're looking for a pay-weekly laptop. Thank you for helping. :)

I looked it up and apparently there's a pay monthly option. I'll have a look and see what Mum says. Thanks, Crayola. :)
