How to make stairs with a halfway landing.
« on: December 27, 2011, 08:36:27 PM »
I heard about this a long time ago, and I tried goofing around with it. And I succeeded! I think it came out looking pretty nice. Here are some photos of it.

And here is how to make your own.

1: Make a wall that's width of the size of the staircase you want. Add some flooring on top.

2: Go to terrain tools.
3: Go to medium square brush, drag the brush softness to the bottom.
4: Click the spot where you want the "landing" to be 3 times.

5: Drag a foundation from the highest point (make it the size that you want your landing.) Make sure that the foundation is 2 squares away from the wall.

6: Level ground around foundation.
7: Place stairs.
8: Delete excess foundation.

9: Enjoy the functional staircase!

Okay, I looked this over and I think I made the tutorial understandable. If you have trouble, ask! I hope you enjoy  :)

Hey guys I'm taking an extended hiatus... again. I'm out of ideas to build houses and I don't have as much fun designing homes like I used to; it feels more like a chore. So that's where I'll be, I will probably be back sometime. :P

Amazing tutorial, thank you! I can see from the images that it would be quite possible to make L shaped stairs using this method (so perhaps you could have the landing in a corner or something), but would it be possible to make like, folding stairs? Hard to explain what I mean... Hang on I'll make a paint graphic!

I'm sorry, this is really awful XD but it's the best I can do, drawing's not my strong point. It illustrates my question though.

I do believe it is possible to create a U shaped Stairs like that. It would involve building a House around that staircase though if you wanted it in the corner I would say. Seeing as ZapKid used Foundation and then you have to use CFE to lower the walls etc.

Oh yes, that is possible. But I think the difference in height of the same floor will give problems in gameplay. Not because of you, but because the game could have problems to see which floor is on which height compared to each other.
Result: sims falling through floors. I'm speaking out of experience.
But your drawings are fine Donotrefreeze. It's very clear to consider what you've been trying to express..

U shaped! That's the phrase I was looking for! Haha, thank you, I couldn't think of it for the life of me. Stupid, really, since I used 'L shaped' to describe corner ones. Yeah, I was quite prepared for the prospect of building the house around the staircase :)

Oh good, I'm glad it made sense :) will the stairs actually be functional though? I don't mind a little graphics glitch if the stairs work!

The stair one was one that I had mentioned to Carl before the Edit Town one was done, but it didn't get done straight away. I've been building these stairs since Sims 1
