Help with the foyer.
« on: December 25, 2011, 12:01:58 PM »
I am having trouble building a house because I just can't seem to get the foyer right. (the little area that is the first thing you see when you walk in the house) It probably should be simple, but I can never get the right size or shape that is right. This in turn messes up my whole house and I just end up quitting in frusteration. As you casn proably tell, architecture is not my strong suit since I can't even get the beginning of the house done!  :-[ Can someone help?

Maybe someone can indeed help you when you upload a picture as an example.

You mean you can't get the right size of it compared to your other rooms? I think I'm mistaken or so as I really don't understand the problem you are facing.
And you get around 8 minutes to explain it to me. Because after that filled chicken is ready and I'll be off duty. ;)

Yes you're correct, I can't get it to be the right size compared to the other rooms. It usually comes out too big and then I can't build off from there.

In my opinion, a foyer works best if you make it small. If the door is 1x2 squares, put it in a 1x3 room (in the center of the front wall) with a 1x2 arch parallel to it. If the door is 2x2 squares, put it in a 2x4 room (in the center of the front wall) with a 2x2 arch parallel to it. I'd get pictures; but that would mean setting up the game, and since it's Christmas, I am ashamed to say I am not up to it.  :P

Hey guys I'm taking an extended hiatus... again. I'm out of ideas to build houses and I don't have as much fun designing homes like I used to; it feels more like a chore. So that's where I'll be, I will probably be back sometime. :P

I'm not a huge fan of foyers.  To me they are rather a waste of space which always irritates me.  In the house I actually live in, we have a very small area where the door is with walls to either side of the door but there are no doors to other rooms or arches or anything.  So I guess in a way it is a foyer but being open it doesn't interfere with having rooms going off from it.  On the other hand, the house I live in is pretty weird anyway!  lol  Most of the houses I build do not have foyers at all.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

I love foyers! Although a lot of the ones I make tend to look somewhat like the one on the guide.

I usually make mine larger with rooms leading off through arches and with stairs in the middle

Mine are single level, typically 4x4, and set out with arches in the middle of each wall, and 1x1 blocks on each side of each arch.
