Latest patch installs advertisement
« on: December 24, 2011, 03:40:11 AM »
The latest patch which you can installs in the game brings actual item advertisement from the Store into your Buy and Build Mode. Items whith a yellow line around them in the left top corner of the list are things that yet are not installed. Those things cost you money, quite obviously but some are free. This means that you have to look very good before you click to install.

I am very curious about your meaning about this new function. For me, I am thinking about little kids playing this game with no feeling for money yet who set nice stuff and installs them, not knowing they are actually buying stuff. And I saw no function in the Settings to turn it of. Therefore, in my opinion this feels quite imposed.
What's yours?

If you go into Options, then General Settings. In there uncheck the one that says Enable Shop Mode. That will stop them from showing up in game.

I'm not fond of the idea, I mean they already added the shop mode where you can buy things in game. Adding them to the catalogue seems to be just trying to earn even more revenue.
I agree too that someone and not necessarily a child could easily buy something by mistake.

**edit**  OK, to buy something, first you have to select it from the catalog, then click the button that says how many simpoints and then you need to confirm your purchase, so buying by mistake might not be as easy as I thought, although if you have young children who play, it might be wise to have it turned off in the settings as they may not realize what they are doing.

I don't like the idea at all. I'm just glad that it can be turned off, though. This is just EA's way of showing us what building/furnishing options we could have. I, however, don't play sims with the intention to shop at all. That's what the online store is for. I've had Shop Mode disabled ever since they first started it, and I don't particularly appreciate them trying to shove it in our faces more.

Same here.  I didn't even really like the idea of Shop Mode, and this annoys me even more.  I'm glad I turned it off.

But it seems like a lot of the community wasn't impressed by this, so -maybe- EA will learn something. . .

Haha, who knows Serena. ;)
I'm glad this option can be turned off after all.
Perhaps EA was indeed trying to find out how people would response to this.

Typical greedy business sense.  They know we'll want to play anyway and a single small decision like this won't stop us from playing or buying their product.  They know we won't like it, but better (in their minds) to show us what we could have, knowing that some of us will want it and some will get it, knowing they can always tell us to "just turn it off."  Better to ask forgiveness than permission, as the saying goes.  I'd wager money it will be reactivated after every future patch and we'll have to go in and turn it off again if we want.  They make a cool product, but they're still a company always wanting more money.

I leave it on.  It shows free things occasionally.  Other than simpoints I got from purchasing an EP, these are the only items I ever get.  Period.   ;)

I can't leave it turned on anyway.  When shop mode is enabled, my game freezes and I can't play it.  When I did get a free item, it never showed up in my game anyway.  I just leave it turned off.

I just left it on for several days to see all the free stuff while I was building a new house! Other than that I'm not crazy about the feature :P

One of the weirdest things is the ads where trying to sell me something I already had.
We are of peace, always but this is war.
We are of peace, always.
We'll help build a resistance. We have to fight.

When all you've ever loved has been stolen from you, sometimes all you have left is revenge.
For the truly wronged, satisfaction can be found in one of two places,  absolute forgiveness or mortal vindication. This is not a story about forgiveness. When deception cuts this deep, someone has to pay.

If you don't see it in your game right away, it will be in the downloads part of the launcher.

Anyway I've found that whenever I do actually get something it freezes up my whole game and I emd up hitting the power button.
If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0.
