Sometimes, Sim families "downgrade" their houses because they are not very good at managing their finances.
They don't know how to keep enough for themselves.
I often see them ending with 0 simoleans after a game month (with story progression off).
Either that or story progression is really random or illogical.
I don't move my sims very often as I always buy the lot I want at first, so I don't know much about moving with furniture.

I've seen the Altos move to the house on the corner just opposite of the Andrews house, closer to town square.

I have seen the Altos move to a small 1 bedroom house. Weird. ???

There was an old story progression mod I used to use several months ago. Every time I played a game with that mod the Altos would always end up broke and homeless.

I had Holly Alto and her son living in a house on the beach in one of my games.  And the Goth mansion has been taken over by several different people.

I kicked my Gen 2 spare out with a good career, a while later he moved into his Mum's old house (Crumplebottom) which I was not expecting because he would not have enough to buy that!

So in other words, everytime the game moves your sims, you move them back, they keep the furniture and the furniture is still in the house you just moved them from....does that make sense, lol.  Apparently, that is what is happening.  Like Pam said, maybe the furniture stays there for the next family.  Wow, you can make a fortune on furniture without even trying, granted, I don't do this on purpose, I fixed up the house and they have money, but maybe they just do not want to stay.

I had my sims become millionares by doing that.

I can see how that would be very easy to do.  I don't think I want to spend time doing it all of the time,  but, at least they got 4 cars out of the Lesson place and 7 guitars.  Of course, I sold them, they already had 3 cars.  I just hate hunting sims down.  I thought I would never find Lesson and was so sure he wasn't even in my game.  I finally found him shacked up in a tiny house with someone.  From riches to rags I guess.

Before this topic, I never actually realised that it was because of Story Progression my neighbours have a life of their own. I thought it was Sims 3's new system or something. Anyway, do neighbouring Sims age when Story Progression is off?

Short answer: yes. For my longer explanation and some more info on the story progression, please see this thread:

Thanks, swede. So by turning SP off, I can play it just like Sims 2, except they age. Cool.

Yeah, but as I explained in that other thread, it will make the whole neighbourhood into a desert.

Yea, everyone would end up dead... Unless I keep adding new Sims.. Or reviving them. Or spreading my legion.
