Oh my, LOL @ myself.  I just place them wherever I can find a spot.  I really should move my 3 story monster of a house off the cheapest, smallest lot in town so I can sprawl out a bit.

Wow, a three story house in a little 20x20 (or something like that) lot?!? That's insane. Of course, I think you can go 5 stories high and like 8 basements deep. But I'm sure someone will come along and correct me on that!  ;D

I've never seen a hose either.  What's up with that?

You have to look real close at the sprinkler to see it.

The dotted line is just a partition because I have the sprinkler between the two middle lines and thats the easiest way to show it.

No, the hose is attached to the sprinkler, you just have to look hard for it, especially in grass. It's always there, you don't buy it and it only connects to the sprinkler, curves a bit, then just stops.
Does that hose take up any space? I.e. would that tile indicated by your drawing be able to have something else placed on it, or is it just for decoration? I haven't actually looked so closely at this.

Yes. Although you can walk over the hose, you can't put anything on the hose. That includes planting anything on the hose.

I arrange my garden exactly like Swede.  Seems to maximize the plant to sprinkler ratio.  Helped out a lot for the Nectar challenge. :)

I usually have very very large gardens (self employed gardeners for the win hehe) ::) Having 4 of each plant, placing them like this :
XX= plant, S=sprinkler.  I also place either a stone or deco on top of the sprinkler to keep the sims from playing with it  ;D

XX    XX                      Example:          TT     AA
XX    XX                                               TT    AA
     S                                                         S
XX    XX                                               GG    LL
XX    XX                                               CC    LL

(Example : TT =tomato, AA= apples, GG= grapes, lettuce ect) I arrange my garden for maximum visibility, trees in the back, pole typed plants (like tomato) in the middle, then ground plants in the front.

When outdoors, I usually do the layout like Swede does. Indoors, i do like this, sometimes a little differently depending on the room's's size (small when my gardener has also something else to do, like fishing or tinkering,  large, if that's his/her only skill).

eooooooe
oeeeeeeo
oeeooeeo
oeeooeeo
oeeeeeeo
eooddooe

o=planter pot (or was that it's name, you know what I mean)
e=empty
d=door is here

this is how i lay my garden out.
x=plant
s=sprinkler
-=open space
f=fence
r=recycling bin
g=gate

ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
f-xxxxxxxxxx--xxxxxxxxxx-f
f                                        f
f-xxxxxxxxxx--xxxxxxxxxx-f
f-xxxxxxxxxx--xxxxxxxxxx-f
f        s                   s         f
f-xxxxxxxxxx--xxxxxxxxxx-f
f-xxxxxxxxxx--xxxxxxxxxx-f
f                                        f
f-xxxxxxxxxx--xxxxxxxxxx-f
f                                        f
f                                        f
f                                     r  f
ffffffffffffffffffggggffffffffffffffff

with this set up i minimize the amount of sprinklers i need while still leaving room to access all my plants.  the space between rows is only the size of one of the plants, while i leave 2 plant widths between the various sections( - = one plant width).

I lay my gardens out like this, with trees at the back, then the staked plants, then the low plants like flame fruit etc at the front. Mainly because I like the way it looks. If I'm growing a huge amount for making nectar etc then I lay the plant out in rows of two than a sprinkler, then another two rows etc etc

I also always put a fence around the whole garden with a gate at the front, a fountain at the back and a rubbish bin somewhere at the side. I always make the fence two squares bigger than the garden. Sometimes I get fancy and put a path down the middle from the gate to the fountain and seats at the sides. Like an english walled garden.
