Garden Layout
« on: March 18, 2010, 11:13:04 AM »
I'm curious about what layouts other players use for their gardens.  I started by planting in rows, but discovered that my sims spent a lot of time walking around trying to get to the right plants.  I eventually settled into a grouping that's like this (x is a plant, - is empty space, s is the sprinkler:

xx-xxx-xx
xx-xxx-xx
-----------
xx-xxx-xx
xx-xs--xx
xx-x-x-xx
-----------
xx-----xx
xx-----xx

So 2x2 squares at each of the corners, with 3x2 rows on three of the sides, with an open space in the front so that my Sim doesn't stand around forever complaining that he can't play in the sprinkler.

I'm curious about what layout others use and why they like it.

Thanks!

That's a good layout, simone.

I use the following just out of habit:

    xxxxx
  ----------
xxxxxxxxx
----------
xxxxSxxxx
----------
xxxxxxxxx
----------
   xxxxx

I have found that this seems to work best with my sims:

 -------S---
 xxxxxxxxxxx
 xxxxxxxxxxx
 ---S------
 xxxxxxxxxxx
 xxxxxxxxxxx
 -------S---

I make the sprinklers mostly inaccessible for just that reason. ;D  With the double rows sims can work both rows with the least amount of walking.  (I think I read that in Carl's Guide.)

Doubles rows seem to make more sense. I've just never done it. I'm sure I'll have a garden somewhere along the line in the new Baby Boomer II Challenge, so that will be a perfect opportunity to try that technique out.

I have mine arranged in a circular way... Distanced from each other for aesthetic purposes.

       x  x
   x          x
   x    S     x
   x          x
       x  x

Something like this, can't clearly be shown here though.

This is what I've started to do:

XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
__________
XXXXSXXXX
___H______
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX

where X's are plants, S is the sprinkler, and H is the hose.

This is my basic set-up:

XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
------------
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXSXXXX
------------
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
Etcetera, etcetera.

PS. @jmz95: Where'd you get the garden hose from? Is it something from HEL?

Hose? I don't remember them, haven't seen them in my game with HEL. Did they come with that and that's why I went to the eye doctor today?

We play ASCII art game  :D

XXXXXX
XXXXXX
   S
XXXXXX
XXXXXX

That works for me. The less sprinklers you have, the better it is...because we all know about the annoyance of sims always wanting to frolic in them.

I place the plants and sprinklers on the crosses where the lines, you know. So my Sims can still fit between all plants.

No, the hose is attached to the sprinkler, you just have to look hard for it, especially in grass. It's always there, you don't buy it and it only connects to the sprinkler, curves a bit, then just stops.

I'm usually leaving room for my sim to do everything concerning the plants, but not enough for him to play with the sprinkler 24/7. See my earlier post.

Does that hose take up any space? I.e. would that tile indicated by your drawing be able to have something else placed on it, or is it just for decoration? I haven't actually looked so closely at this.

No, your sim can walk over it. I'm assuming that's what you mean?
