Nursery Design
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:34:37 AM »
I'll admit that only once so far have I ever had two children younger than the child age in one household at the same time.  None of my Sims has ever had twins or triplets.  I am, however, building a nursery that is likely to see at least two children at the same time.  In Sims 2, the strategy was always to build a teeny 2X2 room for each child's crib so they wouldn't wake one another.  Does that still happen in Sims 3?  Are there any other design considerations to be made when putting together a nursery that will see multiple occupants simultaneously?

In my experience babies and toddlers wake the entire household up whether you have them in separate rooms or in the same room.
When I did the baby boomer 3 I gave everyone the heavy sleeper trait so they would sleep through anything.

Thanks for the tips.  I left up the partitions I'd created, but left off the fourth wall and any kind of door for the time being.  I'll amend it as I go.   :)

I often have multiple infants and toddlers, and I don't recall a crying baby waking up the other one in the nursery.  Maybe I'm going nuts.  I see a negative moodlet when a toddler is playing the xylophone in the same room while the other is sleeping, but the other baby doesn't actually wake up.  I haven't played Sims 2, but I never section a crib off in a small room like you describe.

Thanks, Pam!  As an interesting counterpoint to your experience with the xylophone, I've had an evil toddler gain a positive moodlet when he was in the same room with his infant brother crying, so I guess sometimes it's a good thing.  I can't recall if he actually woke up since he was awake and active so much more than the baby.  Thanks again!

When I have multiple babies/toddlers in one household they tend to all go to bed at the same time and all wake up at the same time. If they are on a "sleep schedule" like this, not only does it make things easier on the parent(s) but also if one cries, well they are all going to wake up right away anyways!

I've been putting the cribs in much smaller rooms with doors and if there are twins then separate rooms. Which are joined to a large nursery room, that way if the stupid parent decides to go in there and play Guitar it won't disturb anyone. Or if one starts crying.

As far as I've noticed no noise will wake up a baby or toddler. Other infants, alarms, stereos and instruments definitely won't wake them up, but will give a modlet; not sure about the TV and as far as I remember I've never played with a light sleeper baby/toddler.

I kind of remember that a once I did have an infant (or he could possibly have been a toddler) wake when his father upgraded the stereo to include the entire house with speakers.  Of course, that was a long time ago, probably before any EPs or patches.

There is still just one child in the household, now a toddler, but the second should be in the works very soon.  I've used fencing to attractively separate half the nursery into a sleeping area with a gate that can be locked against older siblings and guests.  The rest of the room is open with toys.  There are two cribs that are not currently separated from one another, but which are set up so that they easily can be.  I'll have to see how it goes.  m.sato, I hadn't thought of the possibility of a child with the light sleeper trait, but thanks for bringing that up.  Randomizing the traits of 100 children should throw up at least one light sleeper.
