Cats wandering off and getting trapped in The Badlands
« on: December 05, 2011, 01:46:19 PM »
Hi –  I searched a little, but don’t see my problem posted yet…  I have all the expansions and am updated to the latest patch – I’m having a problem with my cats.  I’ve played three households in Appaloosa Plains extensively since Pets came out and all of the houses are having a mysterious problem with their cats – They keep running off into the wilderness, over and over again.  What I mean is, while my eye is not on them, they will pop off the lot (although remain in my household queue) and when I double-click them to zero in on them, I get pulled off into the part of the town where Sims can’t go and don’t see them on the surface.  I’ve tried waiting for them to come back on their own and they never seem to – All during this time, they keep queuing up actions, then the actions drop because they can’t be fulfilled.  Their needs also degenerate as usual, but there no way to address them and hitting the “return home” arrow adds the action to their queue, but it drops pretty quick because they seem to be trapped in the wilderness!

The first cat this happened to, I lost as I saved the game and assumed when I returned, they would reset.  Alas, no…  It disappeared from the household queue entirely.  Probably because it was an elder and was supposed to have passed away in the time it was in The Badlands, but I was afraid to test this out on any others for fear it wasn’t about the age.  Following times I’ve cheated and teleported the cat back home and then kept it busy so they wouldn’t wander off again.  This is exhausting (since it happens a lot), but seemed to work until last night, when one of my cats with a full queue of commands *still* disappeared off into The Badlands when I dashed away for a second to attend another Sim.   >:(

Is this a bug or are they truly on walkabout?  Any solutions other than teleporting them back?  (I haven’t tried “reset Sim”, but teleporting seems easier than that.)

Don't have pets yet; but, real cats are known to roam for days! Can't wait to test the virtual cats.

Does this happen in other games too? If it just happen in this one game the problem may be with that town.

This is actually a known bug that most of the time has to do with the toilet or the tub and them playing with it.  You just need to ResetSim the cat and it will return to your lot and should not cause any more problems for you.   Probably an interaction that they were doing in their queue is what caused them to teleport away.  Like I said, just reset them and they'll be fine.

This can happen in any game in any town.

MoMoll:  The pets are adorable as heck and I love them, which is why this is so stressful!

loveSims:  I've had it happen in two separate (clean) copies of Appaloosa Plains - I don't think I've run any pet households in the other towns yet though to see if it happens there.  I see someone has posted that it *is* a game bug, so mystery solved!

Ricalynn:  Thanks - This is as I suspected and actually, I was keeping a close enough eye on that last cat to see that the last thing they tried to do is play in the tub!  This is a bit unfortunate as I can't live without a toilet or tub and this particular cat must have disappeared 30 times in a human hour last night.  I guess I'll lock all the bathroom doors so as not to lose my mind.   :(  This is a bit strange though - I sent this cat over to a neighbor's house to visit and I personally witnessed her playing in the tub and she *didn't* disappear!  Is it only on your home lot then?

I don't know the exact circumstances.  I just go really control-freak on my cats and make sure they're never in the bathrooms.

Maybe I'll have not get a cat, if I have to be searching for them all time. Do the other animals also do this?

Try changing the bathtub.  It may be only one that's doing it.  I had it happen with a particular tub (can't remember which one) but not others.  Experiment and use resetsim if they teleport.

MoMoll:  Don't let this scare you off...  I think we have it figured out.  There are *some* toilets and tubs that have this bug and EA may fix them, eventually.  In the meantime, simply lock the bathroom doors to pets - That seemed to work just fine for me last night (being sure to move pet items like litter boxes out where they can get to them).  Sure, you might have to pass up on a few lifetime reward promises, but no biggie.  And if they do disappear, just reset them or use the teleport cheat to get them back.  I haven't had any dogs go missing, but then I don't have many dogs.  I think the increased frequency of disappearance was the cat deciding it liked the toilet/tub interactions and the impulse to play there went up with time.

Dellena:  I think you're right that it may be some and not others - that would explain the randomness and it makes sense.  I'll pay better attention until they fix the bug and figure out the "safe" ones.  I remembered that there was an earlier household where the toilet was completely safe - I sent them to play/drink several times, but never noticed if they were playing in the tub (which I added later in the game) and the disappearing started well into the game.  And I tried locking the bathroom doors last night with great success.  Man, I LOVE those locking doors!

Wonderful! I have 2 non-virtual cats that act the same way and are driviing me CRAZY! Unless they fix this, I'll stay away from cats when I get Pets. My non-virtual cat shares the shower with me and can't be out of my sight for a minute. The other one, has gotten into so much troube I can't deal with the same issues with virtual cats.

I know I'm reviving this, but I was wondering if anyone had any new information, since this is now happening to me.  I keep having to teleport (via testingcheats) the cats back to the house.   Does anyone know any of the culprits in terms of tubs and toilets (because that would be very helpful).  Also. for the longest time, the cats weren't teleporting, and then they just started teleporting (and I didn't change the bathrooms at all, so that's where I'm confused).  Any ideas?

Interestingly enough, it does not seem to happen to kittens. (Can kittens play in the tub//toilet?  I seem to remember them being able to, but I could be wrong.)

And I never even thought of locking the doors.  Don't I feel foolish now.  ::)
