The only gnome I received so far turned up in the tumble dryer! It's an abracadabra gnome.

Four posts up:
My 2-star celebrity sim just got the hip-hop gnome sent to her as a present, the same way celebrities get given furniture occasionally.

Just how rare are these gnomes? I've had World Adventures since it was released and have never gotten a single gnome from there (I admit I haven't done that much adventuring, though) and I've had Ambitions for a week, I've done a LOT of sculpting and a fair bit of inventing, but still no gnomes.

The only gnome I've gotten was the prehistoric one, and I got it from the consignment shop. Until then I didn't even know these things existed.

They can end up being quite common actually. For WA best is to post in gems and metals when in the country and occasionally you will get a gnome back. They can also be found by fishing.

However I haven't got an Ambitions one yet, none from inventing, or scultpting, fishing or even laundry.Same as I haven't yet got a meteorite.

Consider yourself lucky on the meteor part! They destroy your garden and your expensive beds and dryers lol. I've gotten the gnomes by sculpting, inventing and doing laundry. I've gotten the WA gnomes by sending in gems in that country, and I've even found a few in the consignment store! I usually find the regular gnomes by fishing or cutting gems at home. I don't have LN yet but as soon as I do, I'll let you know how/if I get the new gnomes!

I've just had a vampire gnome show up in the bedroom of the new Dynasty game I'm attempting. Given that my first Dynasty ended on day 3, week 0, courtesy of a stupid meteor, I REALLY hope this gnome doesn't turn the family.

See, malteser60 you are REALLY not missing anything on the meteors!

Just how rare are these gnomes?
In my Wishmaster Challenge game (4 adult sims, 14 game weeks) I managed to get at least one of each kind of gnome (regular, world adventure and ambitions). I got the regular and world adventures gnomes mostly from fishing, plus a few from sending gems to be cut. Of the ambitions gnomes I got one of each through all the Challenge. I guess I was lucky with the prehistoric one, it turned up on the second or third time machine trip, but the others took ages to get, especially the sculpting one. The four sims had probably made close to 200 sculptures among them (I did manage to fulfill the "place 100 sculptures" wish and still sold enough on the side to get one of the sims to level 10 of the sculptor career), and got just one gnome during all that time. Similar with inventing. Getting gnomes is completely random, and the ambitions gnomes can either come quickly or take not at all in a sim's lifetime.

I have had World Adventures pretty much since release too and the only way I have gotten the gnomes there is at the museum. They were all just laying around and I was able to pick them up but other than that I don't know how to get those. I have gotten a couple of inventing gnomes which I love since they will finish some of your inventions. But none for sculpting and I have done quite a bit of sculpting. And no laundry and that I had done a fair amount of too. So they seem uncommon to say the least if not rare!

Here's what the Prima Guide says about the new gnomes:

The Celebrity magic gnome is sometimes found in the catacombs below the graveyard or inside ore and uncut rocks. This magic gnome loves to be placed near hot tubs, professional bars (on lots you own), and expensive vehicles. The Vampire magic gnome, on the other hand, only shows up if you have several Plasma Fruit in your garden. The exact required number changes all the time, so if you really want to see this gnome, make sure you have plenty of Plasma Fruits on your lot. The Vampire gnome is an adorable little fellow -- and if you happen to have a teddy bear on your lot, it loves to sneak up on the bear. The gnome may even turn the teddy bear into a vampire gnome!

This is pretty different from what I've seen posted on various forums.

I had two plasma fruit plants in the garden when mine showed up, so that's explained. Thanks!

I have my very first sculpting gnome, and all he does is sit under the sprinkler and changes poses every night. Not impressed.

My one (and so far only) sculpting gnome was in a household that did the "place 100 sculptures" wish. The gnome spent most of the time looking for sculptures to emulate. I have a cute picture somewhere of the sculpting gnome in the "deep thought" pose in the middle of four or five huge "deep thought" sculptures of different materials.
