I have gone to France and stole the gnomes there lots of times. Is that what you are talking about in stealing gnomes from art museum?   I get the magical gnomes whenever I send out metals to be smelted.  Can be frustrating, as one day I recieved three gnomes instead of the ignots that I had wanted.

I'm havig problems in getting the snow gnome.  Family built over 30 snowmen but no gnomes.   :(  I don't have the summer one, but then I haven't done any fireworks yet, so that is why.

I think gnomes are cute.

Just so you know you can buy the season's gnomes at the festival with 500 tickets. Each season has a new gnome for sale.

Yes, but there are other non-magical gnomes that could be in the world.  Like the Cat Gnome holding the sign Strays welcome there is two other ones like this for a Dog and Horse.  I thought maybe on in Appaloosa Plains they would be out in the world but I haven't found any yet.

You can't steal the gnome in the art museum or the general store .

As far as the gnomes other people have listed.  That seems to be all the Magic Gnomes I know about except for Lounge Lizard (lvl 7 singing career) will appear if Fried Peanut Butter Sandwiches are left out.  And Cranstan Boonitz will appear if magic is used often gene or witch.

I haven't been able to get the Felix Felinenimus (whacked out cat) gnome to appear or the Carter Caninenimus (best friend dog) gnome to appear.  I also haven't had any luck with Sculpting Gnome (lvl 5 sculptor) appearing.  That's why I asked if anyone knew of any traits that might help these spawn.

All this and more is what my and JSBrantner's research is for and about.

The non-magical gnomes are basically statues and don't usually just appear but can be seen to be looked at, not bought or stolen, in the general store in France.  You can also find them in buy mode under decor/miscellaneous if you own them.  There are several of them that come either as free gifts or through store item purchases as part of a set.  The holding signs gnomes came with Pets and can be bought in buy mode.  There are three of them, cats, dog, and wildlife.  Other gnomes that can be bought or are free items are Lucky Gnome, free St. Patrick's Day download, Char-le-Gnome comes with the Viva Las Vegas package,  and Holiday Cheer santa gnome came with Tis the Season holiday package.

Sleeping Gnome McMulty is the "generally" found statue/non-magical gnome.  He cannot be bought or stolen as far as I know.  He can often, randomly, be found via fishing, mining, dumpster diving, (not confirmed), trash rummaging, (not confirmed),  exploring the mausoleums, (not confirmed), time travel and exploring mined holes in the ground.  He is sometimes found in the mail box instead of cut gems or smelted ore.  I have found him most often fishing in lakes or ponds, though I haven't given up on seeing if I get one in oceans or rivers.

Non, magical gnomes never move or strike poses.  They are statues.  However, the horse gnome, cat gnome and dog gnome, not the ones with the signs which are statues, do move and strike poses.   We'll be checking out other interactions.  All gnomes that are not statues, move and get into mischief.  They all have a variety of poses and actions they do, some more, some less.  The most active gnome is Mysterious Mr. Gnome.  So far he is the only one who can produce nooboo gnomes and he will age till he dies.  Gnome tombstones are statues and can be bought in buydebug.  They appear spontaneously when a gnome dies.  I have never seen Grim come get a gnome, (yet).

To obtain the animal gnomes you first have to have the animal in your home as a pet.  To get the horse gnome you have to have a salt lick on the property and the horse has to lick it several times before the gnome appears.  (not confirmed as to how many times, we're testing this one).  To get the dog and I believe the cat gnome, the cat has to freak out at the fridge, (not confirmed), and the dog has to bark at the fridge.  In a few days they will appear.

For those of you with Seasons, the Ghost of the Darned can be obtained via the Claaaw, I got one second try with normal action and after 34 tries using the fairy cheat action.  I believe it is just random.  He can also be found on the Fortune Teller's lot and can be moved into your inventory the same as the gnomes in the art gallery in France can.  So far I haven't found him anywhere else.  We're researching Seasons gnomes now but so far only have information on the witch gnome.

If any of you have any other information please either pm me or JS or post it here.  We'll try to give credit for new, confirmed info when we finish writing up the guide article.

For the animal gnomes, the dog barking and cat freaking out at the fridge actually get you the freezer bunny gnome. I believe the dog and cat gnomes come from dog BFFs and the cats getting the "whacked out" moodlet from catnip.
From the moment I fell down that rabbit hole I've been told what I must do and who I must be. I've been shrunk, stretched, scratched and stuffed into a teapot. I've been accused of being Alice, and of not being Alice, but this is my dream. I'll decide where it goes from here.

Joria and I are currently working on getting something together for the guide regarding the gnomes. So far there aren't any particular traits that help with getting gnomes from the claw machine, but it does seem to appear faster when using a fairy to 'cheat the system'.

I noticed that my Sim got the ghost gnome when he used it at around midnight. Can't remember if he was lucky or not.

Graduation Gnome is also now available if your have University Life.  My Sim aced every exam so I'm not sure if the gnome was a result of filling the metric or from the Passing with an A.

One of my sims gained it while he was in a rabbithole class. I don't remember if his metric was filled or not.

There is a 1% chance of getting a study gnome after you use the 'study hard' tone. The magic gnome itself makes studying 3 times more effective, whether in inventory or within 8 distance units (tiles?) of the sim.

Re: Magic/Mysterious Gnomes: How Many
« Reply #447 on: March 17, 2013, 05:48:21 PM »
JS Brantner and I are doing research into all these gnomes for an article for Carl's guide.  There's a lot of info out there about gnomes, but not all of it is confirmed.  So here is what IS confirmed for some of them but without the pics to go with at the moment.

1. Gnome poses:  There are at least 4 gnome poses for all the magical gnomes.  None of the statue gnomes, (Sleeping Gnome McMulty and the ones you get from the store), move or change poses.  All the other gnomes move and change poses and they often move more than once a Sim day.

2.  Laundry gnome:  Acquired by doing laundry but you MUST have the high end washer and dryer, (the red ones).  The amount of loads needed is random.  JS got her first one after 2 loads and I'm pretty sure I'm into 200 loads and no laundry gnome yet.  The normally show up pretty fast and once you get one you are likely to get more than one.  If your laundromat has the high end washer and dryer you MIGHT get a laundry gnome.  This is not yet confirmed.

3.  Aging:  So far the ONLY gnome who ages is Mysterious Mr. Gnome.  You must have 2 MMG's to have nooboo gnomes.  Life stages are baby, toddler/child, teen ager, adult, elder, tombstone.
MMG's have more than 4 poses but haven't gotten pics of all of them and they aren't totally confirmed yet.

4.  Gnomes do stuff!  Some can increase your skill, (MMG for gardening forinstance), some can build stuff, (inventor gnomes will complete an invention to 90%), some are just fun and funny and some are creepy or evil. Ghost gnomes will attract other ghosts to your house and if you carry one around in your inventory when folks or animals look at you they get a thought bubble of a ghost.  My fav is the s-Gnome-man gnome who builds igloos and makes snow angels.

5.  Vampire gnomes will appear on your lot after you plant plasma fruit and it actually has fruit on it.  As long as you have plants you will get VGs.  They fly, sleep, hunt, stalk and transform teddy bears and ONLY teddy bears into other VGs.  They do NOT transform people into vampires.  My Sims just basically ignore them.

6. TV:  They will randomly turn tv on, (usually when the rest of the house wants to sleep, ditto with stereos) and go watch it.  VGs love to watch tv and their favorite channel is the adventure/scifi one with a lot of violence and evil laughter.  YES, they do have preferences!  My witch gnome prefers the children's channel, my Sultan Sam and Master Manchu prefer the sports channel but like to surf.  If a gnome has turned a certain channel on, they will all watch whatever it is without changing it, although they might check the weather channel on occasion.

7.  Gardens:   They all seem to love the outdoors and love the sprinklers, all except the vampire gnome and Little Leon who try to hide their faces from it.  The witch gnome can often be found by the scarecrow, (required to get a witch gnome and it MUST be autumn season), doing a variety of poses including a pretty Harry Potter type move on her broomstick.  They will often sleep in the gardens and peer under or at plants.

8.  How to obtain gnomes:  That will be covered fully for each type when we're done.  If you want a gnome NOW you can go to buydebug and obtain them.  Some are statues/store items.  These are not found in buydebug so the ones you get from buydebug are the magical ones.  It has been covered that you can obtain gnomes by sending away gems and ores for cutting/smelting, and by mining if you don't want to do buydebug.  Hearsay is you can get them dumpster diving and rummaging but I've never gotten one this way.

I'm currently working on the Seasons gnomes and have found the trigger for 3 of them so far.  JS is working on the horse, dog, laundry and freezer bunny gnome.  It's going to take awhile before we confirm each other's findings and are ready to share with you guys but I must say it's been a ton of fun!

Seasons gnomes so far:

witch gnome:  (Having an elder moment and can't remember her name, Cracklin or Cacklin something or other)   To obtain this gnome the season MUST be autumn and to get her on your lot you place a scarecrow there.  If you place two scarecrows you get two.  Can't confirm the haunted house yet.

Spring gnome:  Must be spring season.  Go to the Festival Grounds no later than 8 am.  Gather eggs.  Do NOT "search for eggs".  Just go around and put a bunch of them in your queue and gather them.  Other townies will show up to hunt for them too so it's best to be an early bird.  Once you have all the eggs possible for you, you'll get a message saying all the eggs have been found, come back tomorrow.  The gnome is found randomly in one of the eggs.  The message you get is, "Huh.  Well this gnome is better than a stinking egg."  Made me laugh.  Out of three days I got one gnome.  One day I was late and the eggs were gone too soon.  Another day don't know what it was.  So apparently it is a random event to get one this way.  It's still spring in my game so I'll keep trying and see what happens.

s-Gnome-man:  Must be winter. (duh)  You MUST set the temperature to 32f, freezing and the snow level to deep.  Then you build a snowman.  I couldn't stop with just one but he definitely showed up after two.  When you set the weather to warmer and the snowmen start to melt, mine disappeared.  Not sure if it was just a temporary sulk or what because once I reset it to freezing and built another snowman, he was there, (or a different one was).

Summer gnome:  Haven't researched it yet it's still spring.

I just got a gnome from University.  I forgot to take a picture but the pop up was something like "Lizzy was working so hard she didn't notice gnome jumping into her backpack."

:)
