I keep getting Gnome gravestones... But no "live" gnomes... Is there something in the code for why this happens?

Are you in Monte Vista?

@Janna -  Yes the ghost gnomes change colors.  But the Gnome of the Darned doesn't have a preserver that's Brawn Brawn.  If you go to buy mode and pick him up, it tells you what kind of gnome he is.    Look at the pictures that Joria posted above - Brawn Brawn is the one in the top picture and the Gnome of the Darned is the little green guy wearing a sheet in between the plants.

Is that a witch gnome in the last picture? :o

Yes.  Her name is Cracklin Nackerbell and you can obtain her in the fall with 500 festival tickets, randomly given by going through the haunted house on the festival grounds, or by having a scarecrow on your lot.  If you have more than one scarecrow you'll get more than one witch gnome.  She has the most adorable poses!

I keep getting Gnome gravestones... But no "live" gnomes... Is there something in the code for why this happens?

I've wondered that myself.  I understand getting a tombstone when one of my gnomes dies, (I name them all so know if it's one of MY gnomes), but I've had random tombstones appear with either unnamed or named by someone other than me on them.

The Gnome of the Darned, can they change colors?  I got one out of the Clawww and he was pink.  I hope he changes color, I really, really, don't like the color pink.

My fairy sims were working in the nectar garden I am creating, they had been there for a couple of  days (on static) and when I went to check an area he was there by the fence.  I don't know if having the sprinkers on, I don't turn them off, was a factor.  I keep the temps at 75 so that can't be the reason, at least in my case.
I'm assuming he is the Darned one, as he has the life preserver.

I have yet to have a gnome leave, they change poses often, like to move around and will get in a bunch as if they having a chat time.  I have never told my sims to kick one, although they do so in the Fall.  I try to stop them, I feel it is so mean of them.

I wish I had posted a picture I had taken before I unistalled.  Had two of the gnomes in the hedge fence.  One was on one side with showing just from his waist back. The other was on the other side, just from head to waist showing. It was obvious it was two different types, cute picture.
Get a lot of the mysterious ones in the mail from smelting.  Four one day.  lost a lot of mercury that time.

Yes, they really change color.  The Gnome of the Darned I picked up at the Gypsy Fortune Teller was kind of white or very pale grey.  Once I placed him on my lot he turned cyan blue.  He's the one who always looks worried or sad.  The one I got from the Claaw was pink, (my favorite color, lol), but he quickly turned yellow and looks very ticked off and menacing.  They turn white or grey when they sleep but come return to a color when they are active/awake again.  I'm trying to find out if the color has anything to do with their mood or the ghosts they attract.  My first ghost was also cyan colored from death by drowning.  The next was pink.  However I also randomly got various colors of ghosts from whatever kind of death they had.  I'm just going to have get more of the Darned ones before I can really find out anything further on them.  Anyone know of any other way to get one besides buydebug, Claaw and gypsy?

The one you got while gardening was BrawnBrawn.  He is the summer gnome.  So we know where you had your temp set, but what else had you done besides garden?  In order to get a summer gnome I had to go nap at the beach. My attempts at napping in the sun at home didn't produce a gnome but I didn't try often.  However, napping at the beach in the hot sun is almost a guarantee.  There should be a trigger from something you do at the festival but I haven't found it yet.  I had my temps set at 100 which meant a lot of sims died from spontaneous combustion.

So far I have not gotten any MMG by smelting.  I've sent off a lot of ore but so far zip and I'm wondering if it had to be a combo of ore and gems?  I have gotten six of them so far by mining.  Some were young adults and one was an adult who rapidly became an elder.

Time travel to the past brought me a Troglodyte gnome but travel to the future can net you a Sleeping Gnome McMulty.  It takes several tries for either one, unless you are lucky and hit it right off.  It is totally random.

:-[  Goofed, was wondering why you said the Darned wasn't the guy with the life preserver.  I knew he wasn't the Darned one, so had to check why.  I wasn't sure what his name was, so meant to say Summer one, but instead typed Darned.

They are my gardening sim couple, so all they do is garden pretty much.  Poor things only get to leave the garden when they start to go all squirrely on me.

They had just started a new garden so they had planted the perfect plants and I put up the sprinklers and turned them on.  Have them fertilize them, then they make the circuit around the plants to bloom them.  I keep them doing that until the plants mature.  By then they are going nuts and so I send them to the festivals.
So, sprinklers are going off for the whole time, probably two (max three) days of sim time as it was the smaller garden.   Checked on the other side of the trees in case I missed a plant and there he was, under a sprinkler with his preserver on, leaning back on his hands, all comfy like.

As for the mysterious gnomes, I have the gem cutter so I don't send any gems out.  But had from China the five metals and so had sent out a bunch of them, gold, mercury and the two that start with p (can't remember what they are or how to spell them) no iron or silver are sent out to be smelted.  Using the elixer my sim was searching from the time he arrived to the time he left.  I had the meal bars and shower cans for food and hygine, steel bladder so no pit stops.   Rough three days for him; let him relax and do whatever he wanted for a couple days after he returned.   ;D
The one I haven't been able to get is the winter one.  Had my sims build over 40 snowmen and no gnome.

Edited:
Sent my sim to China so she could get the cookbooks.  Decided to check adventures and got the five metals.  Put her on static and off she goes.  Ended with LOADS of metals and a few gems.  Made over 300,000 on the trip.  Also received back five of the little critters.  Sheer luck that she made so much money in China, usually between 60,000 and 90,000 is a good haul.
I think the program had a hichups  :) , as soon as I collected the metals from an area and went to another area, they popped back up.  Not normal.  I'm not complaining, though.   ;D

Joria, I haven't tested this but in one game I had the haunting ritual backfired and killed my sim. As soon as grim came to take her away, a gnome of the darned appeared.
From the moment I fell down that rabbit hole I've been told what I must do and who I must be. I've been shrunk, stretched, scratched and stuffed into a teapot. I've been accused of being Alice, and of not being Alice, but this is my dream. I'll decide where it goes from here.

This has happened in multiple instances in my game experience as well.

This is a first for me.  My  sim returns from a trip to China, she get three magical gnomes back with the metals (at this rate I am going to be overrun with gnomes).  I go looking or the other gnomes and they are all lying around on the ground, in different poses.  Don't have a photo a I wasn't expecting anything to happen.  Go to them to add the three extra gnomes.  Boney (the maid) comes walking over and as she prepares to kick one of them they all vanish!  Just pop, they were all gone.  She is standing there, mad she didn't get to kick them.

I've seen one or two pop off, but never a whole group, nine, do the disappearing act at the same time.   Found them, on the other side of the pond, and added the three new gnomes.  They again, as a whole, vanish. Go looking and they are in one of their favorite spot, by the driveway at the entrance under a tree.  They generally are there or near the telescope with different looks and poses; some scared, some relaxing, a couple of them like to do what I see as Russian dancing, arms cossed and feet kicking up.  Nappy is, as always, napping with his thumb in his mouth.
I don't  think he has adapted very well to his new home.  He must be missing France.

I think having a Mysterious Mister Gnome acts to kind of coordinate all the gnome poofing. I noticed the same thing when I added a MMG to a herd of random specialty gnomes.

Mine poofed en masse before I had any MMGs, so I don't think that is a factor.  Just collective gnomishness.  lol

Thanks for confirming this.  It seems in general there are at least 3 ways to acquire most gnomes, at least the Seasons ones.  So for Darned we have
1.  failed ritual resulting in deat
2.  grab at Fortune Teller lo
3.  get from the Claaw

for the other Seasons I've only found two for Autumn and one each for winter and spring.

With Ambitions, you also got the Inventing Gnome, the Sculpting Gnome (can be made out of wood or stone, but both have the same name), and the Troglodyte.

The Freezer Bunny came with Pets.

Besides the seasonal gnomes, the Evil Gnome came with Seasons. I think Spring's gnome is Butternut Bucktooth.

When you're talking about magic gnomes, you generally don't include Sleeping McNulty as he doesn't do anything magical.   There are 5 gnomes in game that are from buy mode that don't really do a lot.  Sleeping McNulty, the three wildlife gnomes and the one from Town Life Suites.  There are more from the store but they're all just decoration not magical as in they don't move.

Generations also gave you the gnome tombstone (Memorial to a Gnome).

Are you in Monte Vista?

Yes! Is it a known glitch? I don't really mind much because they can be sold for lots but I feel kind of sorry for the gnomes that never got a chance to live!

There are gnomes in Monte Vista.  I can't remember which lots they are on but when they die you get the memorial on your property for some reason.
