Chapter 38 - Love, Loss, and Love Again

Adlais here. I know it's tradition in this family to hand this book of memory down only when the previous writer has finished their part, but it's fallen to me early. Mum's not immortal yet, but after she read the chapter Dad wrote and after what I'm going to tell in a minute, she decided she wanted to hand it over early. She says I should have the job of writing about my own happiest moments. And it seems like I have to write about her saddest, too.

My mum and my Grandma Megan introduced you to me already, and the other Grandmas have covered most of why we're here. I'm a good, charismatic, artistic virtuoso who loves the outdoors. I plan to join the music career, but I decided I wanted to spend a week honing my guitar skills first and earning a bit of money.

And that was when I met Wade.

Everyone in my family seems to have known who it was they were going to marry the first time they set eyes on them. When I was a teen, I always said that it wasn't possible. I mean, how do you know someone's the one for you when you've barely met them? It doesn't make sense. While everyone in my family saw someone, proposed and stayed with them until they died, I could never quite believe it could happen to me. Until it did.

I met him when I was out busking in the park. And by that evening he was round my house, and I was flirting with him completely without shame.

It worked!

Of course, we were being watched by a creepy paparazzi. There's always one at the house. You have to wonder if they don't have anything better to do. Like hunky men of their own to kiss.

It seemed like a romantic moment, nonetheless.

And so in true Afon girl fashion I proposed. With the token airbourne Grandma in the background.

Hot, right? Grandma Anwen helped him pick out some new clothes. Money's not at all an issue anymore, and we decided to treat him as a moving in present.

And then... a scream. I ran down the stairs to find Mum and Grandma Eleri screaming in the studio. Dad had decided to fix the stereo. Since he'd had the affair he'd been trying to help out around the house a lot, in the hope of making amends. But he had barely a clue about handiness, and I don't know why he didn't just ring the repairman.

He hurt everyone, and now he's dead before we ever let him make it up to us. Was it really that bad that we couldn't forgive him? If we had, maybe he wouldn't have been fixing the stereo and maybe he'd still be here today. I feel awful.

Mum hasn't really spoken to anyone since. She just plays chess in the garden. Where they used to play chess together, it's just her. And I realise that however hard it is for me, it's worse for her.

I'd probably be doing the same with my guitar if not for Wade. I know what the elders mean now when they talk about love. After the horrible events of the day we didn't want to make a fuss, and we got married quietly in the music room. It seemed fitting, as we're both music lovers.

The next day I found out I was pregnant. I spent my pregancy playing at the park (pregnant women can still rock!).

Welcome Seren, the 7th generation Afon. We gave her the middle name Olivia. It seemed fitting.

Author's Note: I have no idea why Ollie tried to fix that stereo. He had a handiness skill of 1. When the camera panned to the studio I thought Wade was aging up (hadn't checked his age at that stage), or one of the paparazzi had died on the lot again (there'd been two that week already die outside the house). I've got mixed feelings about his death. On one hand he was possibly my least favourite spouse so far, and everyone in the house except Gwenlyn hated him even before he had the affair. On the other, he didn't deserve to die in such a horrible way and I don't like the idea that his death could have been averted if I was watching a bit more closely. RIP Ollie.

It did mean however that you get to meet generation seven 20-odd days earlier. It'll give Wade a bit more time with his child I suppose. But still.  :(

R.I.P Ollie. I'm kinda sad he never got to fully apologize, but at least we get to meet Seren early!

Chapter 39: Mum's Immortality

The day after Seren's birth, Mum became an elder and Wade an adult.

Grandma Anwen says that life goes no slower when you're immortal. I suppose that makes sense. After all, it gets faster the older you get. Grandma Megan told me I should make the most of Seren's nooboo years, because she regrets not being around for more of Mums. This is quite difficult when there's five elders vying for the attentions of your baby daughter.

Maybe we should all have nooboos when we're elders and have achieved everything else in life? I'm sure we'd be better mothers then.

Anyway. Mum tried out blue highlights in her hair, but we managed to talk her out of it. She looks no different from her adult days.

I was allowed in to watch the ambrosia ceremony. Usually only the immortals are let into the room during that time, but Grandma Eleri decided it was better to let me see. I've got to do it one day, and I want to be prepared. She prepared the ambrosia and then all the elders file in, sitting in their appointed seats. Mum wasn't impressed by the taste, by the look on her face, but the other immortals seemed used to it.

She lit up like we do on a birthday, but there was no physical change when the sparkles subsided. She's immortal now, and it's me next

Congratulations on your fifth immortal!  You're over halfway there!  I've been lurking and following your story for a while now and I love the Afons.  You're a very talented story teller.  :)

Congrats on your 5th immortal! Its too bad they can't have nooboos when they are elders, even though it would be kinds weird.

It would, and it makes sense as there'd be so many orphaned kids if they could. It's just annoying in Addy's case, because she's always out playing for tips to try and trigger the Guitar Star opportunities and so she's barely aquintances with Seren. Seren does have five grandmas though, so she's hardly complaining.

Thanks! It's only since Gwenlyn became immortal that I started to realise I might be able to complete this.

Chapter 40: Toddler to Child

After nearly 200 years on sim-earth, Grandma Anwen and Grandma Megan still gets teary whenever someone ages up. Mum and I inherited Grandad Jack's more logical outlook, and cheered her toddler birthday on. If she's going to be immortal then I'd rather not change nappies for the rest of eternity.

As you can see, her favourite colour is blue.

As I'm always busy with my music (being a rockstar is harder work than MTV makes it look), Grandma Rhiannon took on the responsibility of teaching little Seren to talk.

Mum read a couple of books to her.

It went down so well that Grandma Rhiannon took her to the library and they read practically everything in sight. She loved the writing books, the painting books, the story books... you name it, she read it.

But they left teaching her to walk for me. My little baby. When I see her, my heart explodes with so much love.

I'm not sure I was 100% sold on immortality before, but my daughter makes me want to live forever.

Both Wade and I wanted to play our instruments at a party, so we threw one for Seren's child birthday. The guests seemed slightly more interested in the pizza than the actual birthday.

Mum carried her to the cake.

Aaaaaannnndddd...

...a child.

She's become a bookworm, which is hardly surprising.

Chapter 41: Birthdays, Mostly

It came as no surprise to any of us that Seren started writing as soon as she got near a computer. Every day after school she goes to the library and does her homework, reads a novel, and then comes home to write. It's a hard job getting her away from the computer to interact with reality, let alone make friends.

I'm finally getting promotions at work. For a while I just didn't seem to be progressing at all. I'd be going to work every day and feeling like I'd achieved nothing. But then they all came at once and I'm at level four in my career now. Here I am eating a celebratory hamburger. Thanks go to Mum for the dodgy picture. I think she's been drinking Grandma Megan's mixology attempts again.

We threw another party for my adult birthday. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be able to get away with wearing dresses like these, so flaunt it while you've got it!

No, more importantly, it's about aging up with all your friends there to see. I invited a bunch of people from work and then some of my best friends from my schooldays. Plus all the Grandmas, Mum, Wade and little Seren.

I've still got the looks to be a rockstar, right?

The day after it was Seren's birthday. She decided not to have a party and we had a quiet celebration in the kitchen with just the family. She demanded we do it first thing in the morning, so she could have the day off school. Cheeky!

I think she was excited to leave her childhood behind.

But not so excited by the hairdo.

She's gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. I don't think she's going to have any trouble finding a boyfriend, or several for that matter.

As well as a beautiful daughter, I have a perfectionist daughter. She went off to City Hall first thing to apply as a self-employed writer. She said that if she had to max a career, she was going to do it right.

And you know, maybe Grandma Anwen had a point when she said it does hurt for them to grow up.

I turned my graphics up slightly, which may affect it, but I think Seren is the prettiest sim I've had. I really thought that by the seventh gen I was going to be getting some truly odd looking sims, but apparently they get better with each generation!

Also, to Katluvr and Alex, thanks! I really appreicate the comments and support.

Chapter 42: My Writer

Seren wasted no time getting on with her career. She's at level four of it already and has written three hits and one bestseller.

She asked me to teach her to drive and I eventually agreed. For some reason she wanted to use Grandma Rhiannon's Motive Mobile. You'd have thought that a teenager would want to use one of the expensive sports cars, but no, apparently not.

Goes with the distinct lack of normality in this family. Other than Grandma Megan, Grandma Eleri is the most normal and likes nothing more than to tend her garden, cook for the family and read a book. She loves having a novelist in the family, new books delivered free of charge!

Grandma Rhiannon's taken up painting. Which would be fine, if she didn't do it in the living room in her nighty.

Grandma Anwen and Mum have discovered the hot tub. Anwen uses it to relax. Mum is constantly amazed by how far away she can make her feet look.

Megan's a famous sports star and holds special autograph sessions so that everyone who wants to see her can. One day, when I'm a rockstar, I'll hold them too!

Wade drums. Loudly. Near constantly. In a tuxedo. But I love him still.

He aged up to elder there, unsurprisingly. And retained the tux.

Seren decided to go to prom solo. I was a little bit worried about her not seeming to have many friends, but she got together with a boy at the dance. His name is Jed and he lives in one of the posh little houses on the island. I didn't even know she was all that interested in boys!

But it's not been plain sailing. Since the prom he's refused to see her. She phones him up to invite him over or out and he's never interested. She was so happy and smiley when she came home from the prom, how can it have got to this? I wanted to go over and tell him exactly what I thought, but Grandma Anwen stopped me. Probably for the best.

Seren tried to, but he was out.

Just a note to the readers and mods:

I've just realised the pictures have gone from this thread. I'm at work now so I can't sort it out, but when I get home tonight I'll move them over to Carl's gallery and get it sorted out. I'd rather not remove them until I can replace them so it's easier to find out what went where, but they'll be back soon!
