Chapter 50: Waiting

Waiting is hard, and that's what we're mostly doing around here these days. You know there's certain requirements we have to fulfil, don't you? I've nearly done all of mine now.

I got promoted to CEO and achieved my lifetime wish. Yeah, in my boss' bathroom. I'd gone round to ask her for a promotion and was so nervous I had to get it out of the way as quickly as possible. Luckily Michele saw the funny side and promoted me.

And I had my adult birthday. We had a party, because the elders wanted something to do mostly.

On the plus side, I don't look that much different. I kinda wish we could become immortal while we still look young, but that's probably fairly vain isn't it?

There's happy news, too. Her name's Jade.

I'd like to marry her, but it's just not going to happen. We both accept that.

It's an odd atmosphere in the house. Everyone knows we're only so near, and yet it feels so far away. I've got one more promotion and to get my elder painting and sculpture done and then that's it. In two weeks, I'll have joined my family as an immortal and we'll be onto the next step.

Not that we know what that next step is yet. Grandma Eleri and Grandma Gwenlyn are working long and hard trying to establish what'll happen when we're all immortal. Grandma Anwen thinks we'll just be transported back to where Grandma Eleri left off back in her clan. Grandma Megan disagrees and thinks we're going to have a struggle on our hands. Mum, for once in her life, can't find the answer in a book. Grandma Adlais and Grandma Rhiannon are trying to think of anything but what's going to happen.  And me? I have no idea. I don't even feel like I want to leave Riverview.

Two weeks. Two weeks and we'll know.

Chapter 51: The Finish Line

We're here, we're here. My elder birthday. It's completely terrifying and incredibly exciting at the same time. I'm becoming an elder, which isn't the birthday most of us look forward to.

I thought about a party, as it's the last birthday we'll ever celebrate in this house. But in the end it was just the family. We weren't really sure what was going to happen when I'd eaten my ambrosia, and I didn't want to drag anybody else into the whole saga. The town already thinks we're weird enough with Grandma Eleri having lived this long, and we don't need to add any more weirdness. Or put them in danger, although I don't know if it'll come to that.

The whole family, all eight generations, gathered to watch me blow out my candles and become an elder. I'd like to say I did it gracefully.

And then the post-birthday routine that I've got perfected now. First a makeover...

...then portrait and sculpture with Grandma Anwen.

Meanwhile the rest of the family had wandered off, Grandma Eleri to her books, Grandma Rhiannon to take a fishing trip. Grandma Megan was relaxing in the hottub. Grandma Gwenlyn was blowing things up on her chemist table, but weirdly for once this was actually encouraged by Grandma Eleri. Mum could be found in her room finishing her novel, and Grandma Adlais' bass practice could be heard floating from some far corner of the house. The whole house, despite the activities being much the same as every day, had an air of people doing things for the last time.

And then Ambrosia. Eight generations of work and it all comes down to me eating this. I never considered not going through with it. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just family loyalty. Or just that I've sacrificed so much, and everyone else has sacrificed so much, that it's just not worth failing at the last.

It tastes disgusting. You'd think, considering she's been eating it for centuries, Grandma Eleri would have figured out some way to make this stuff at least edible, if not nice. Everything else she cooks is delicious, so what's the deal?!

It's not a very noble way to become immortal, cursing the taste of your food.

I felt a strange kind of power surging through me, and then nothing. Absolutely nothing. Then again, did I really expect to be transported back to Grandma Eleri's kingdom? It was probably never going to be that easy. As Mum said afterwards, the story rarely ends where you think they will.

I think I was still disappointed though, and by the looks on their faces many of the others were too. But Grandma Eleri and Grandma Gwenlyn didn't, and they motioned to us to follow them downstairs into the musem.

I can't believe I've finished! Taryn and I would like to say thanks to everyone who's read or commented along the way, and we've got virtual cookies for you all! We finished on Week 49, Day 1. It's about four months since I started playing sims and this was a massive learning curve but I'm so pleased I managed it. The last ten days were torture with nobody supposed to be doing anything in particular (until half Taryn's best friends died and she had to go make new ones).

*does a happy dance*

I'm going to work out the value of the museum after I come back from a weekend away with work, but for now here's some pictures and Taryn's immortality stats.

Congrats, I like how we both finished our dynasties within a week from each other. I think your dynasty is a bigger accomplishment because you managed to pull off a guitar supermax.

Thanks everyone! It really does feel great! I'm amazed I managed to pull off guitar, actually. She was one opp short the day before her elder birthday and managed to pick up bass skill, and I thought we were done for and started her learning charisma. Then she got the last opp.

Just about to go into my game and get the museum values.

The End of The Beginning

I followed Grandma Eleri and the others down into the museum. Nobody spoke as we walked past the rows of paintings and stopped in front of Grandma Gwenlyn's display.

"We've done it," said Grandma Eleri.

"And what happens now?" asked Grandma Anwen.

"Let me explain," Grandma Eleri replied. "There's a lot to be said and then a lot to be done, and it'll sink in easier if I have no interruptions. As you know, you've all had to undertake a specific skill in order to eat Ambrosia. Although all of our requirements have been important, this was perhaps the most. These skills are what will get us, me, back home.

Taryn. You have become a master of all things mechanical. There is a time machine in this basement that was procured by me a long time ago. There is also the teleporter which you have often used upstairs. You will need to link these, and they will enable us to travel.

Seren. You have written many books and read even more. I need you to write the rules we have followed out, and then our story, and procure two copies of each finished book. You will place one in the library and give the other to me.

Adlais. You are the master of the guitar and three other instruments. Tune them, and then pack them away for now.

Gwenlyn. You are our logical genius. You know what you have done, and the others will know soon.

Megan. You are the fastest, strongest athlete in Riverview, and also the one who had the hardest time coming to terms with immortality. Fetch the tombstones of our ancestors from the cemetary, help Anwen with her task, and then you will need to run something to the henge. It is important that it does not travel by car.

Anwen. You have been our artist and painted and sculpted many of our museum pieces. They're needed now. Megan will help you carry them upstairs. Place the young adult pieces into a circle and box the rest up, one box for each of us.

Rhiannon. You have learnt all there is to know about the fish and the river. We're going to need your knowledge now. Catch us some fish to take with us, and then come and find me."

She paused, waiting for our tasks to sink in.

"My task, as my skill gives me, is over now. Everyone here has eaten the Ambrosia. I've told you that the Ambrosia would make you immortal, and until Adlais ate it that was all I knew it could do. But, since I've learnt more and now Taryn has eaten hers it will begin to return our powers to us. I don't yet know how that will feel, so be wary.

My other task is to get us back to my homeland. That can only be achieved with you all doing your tasks, and then us challenging Ifanna. We will be doing this at the henge, at dawn. Gwenlyn has prepared a solution that will enable us to work through the night. It also has an added bonus."

She pulled eight pink flasks from her pocket and handed one to each of us. Then she raised it to her mouth, and swallowed. A flash of light illuminated the chamber and she briefly disappeared from view. When it subsided, she was young again.

"Taryn," she said. "You next."

The mixture was thick and cloyingly sweet like my Ambrosia had been, but without the bitterness to counteract it. It gave the same burst of energy and I felt as if my feet might be lifted off the ground. I was young, although with more power than I had felt when I had been a young adult the first time around.

The rest of the immortals followed my lead, and tipped back their potions. For a few minutes afterwards, there was a quiet murmer of noise, the sounds of those who had been alive many years regaining their lost youth and feeling a new power at the same time. For me, being a young adult had not been all that long ago, but for the older Grandmas it was rediscovering a feeling lost centuries ago.

"We should get on with our work," said Grandma Eleri. Before she'd even finished the sentence everyone was moving back to the stairs to complete their work.

"It feels different to pure youth to you, too," she said to me. "Some of the others won't have noticed yet, but I can feel my powers returning and you can feel yours too. Seren might still be young enough to tell the difference too."

She wandered off towards Grandma Gwenlyn, and I went to go and look for this mysterious time machine. The handiness was the easy part of this, comprehending new magical powers was something I would deal with later.
