Out of curiousity when you go to do it with the martial artist, don't cut or smelt anything.  Just do the uncut/unsmelted metal and gems. The reason I ask this is because it's random when you're going to get the gnomes and doing this will remove them from the equation of profit.

Also, about how often do the dogs catch gigantic space rocks versus normal rocks?

I've done this and the results are in a new thread.

My dog in both tests found exactly 50-50 large rocks and gigantic rocks. One of the gigantic rocks in each test was a 30k+ value, too. She still hasn't completed the rock collecting challenge even after both tests, however... sigh.

The dog can hunt on its own with the instruction "sniff out collectable." I had one get woohooium, supernovium, 2 tiberium gems, and a soulpeace gem.

Even if it has the Hunter trait though, you still have to teach it to hunt. If you don't it won't ever be able to sniff things out.

Thanks, callycat. I think that whether you feel it matters that the Sim has to be involved in the dog's money making, you can at least agree on one point.. My original assessment of this skill was off by a mile. I updated the dogs guide and linked to this topic :)

The multiplier comes from actually cutting and smelting as when you cut or smelt something the original value is multiplied by a specific number.

Ok, that makes sense.  So really, a more valid comparison would be to compare the value of the items prior to processing, since that portion of the earning potential depends entirely on the Sim doing it.  The cat's earning potential vs. the dog's actual contribution to the total potential.

Does this require a specific hunting level to be able to do on his own?  The dog I have that's been training hunter doesn't have this option.

I think you have to click on the ground, and it may make a difference where you click. I seem to recall I wouldn't get that option in the front yard, but would at the side (sorry I wasn't more specific). The option comes up after the first level, I think.

I may have a slight bias too :D But the cat can catch death fish, so I still have a good use for her.

I used my own dog as the model for the sim, so I should probably give her a treat now!

If you have a slight bias towards dogs, why is your username callycat? Thanks for this, I was wondering what could be done with dogs to make a lot of cash!!!!!!!  ;D

Thanks for posting callycat! I'm glad dogs and cats use their skills to earn their keep, although It seems that an unbiased experiment might see how the salaries compare if the dog and cat were both "self-employed" and sold their items through the Inventory Tab without help from a Sim.

I wondered if anyone would be surprised by that. I'm a dog lover, dog owner (and occasional breeder) but since an ex and my husband both gave me a cat-related nickname I have to assume I have a lot of catlike personality traits myself *g*

No offense to dog lovers, but I really hate dogs. Though, it's probably from my severe allergy to them.
At any rate, my first (and only, thus far) family to adopt a dog made over 200,000 from him in two weeks. Which was pretty awesome. In that time he collected 5 tiberium and at least 3 gigantic rocks along with various other gems and metals. So coming from someone completely and totally biassed against dogs, I can attest to the fact that they make much better money-makers than cats, and I think I've been turned to the darkside when it comes to dogs for sims. They're my new go-to pet.
I was really glad to see the results that you posted about using a sim to help them optimize their profits. I found that quite helpful and instructive, as aside from the tiberium I was simply selling all their gems and metals raw.
I apologize if this was already asked or mentioned, but in that 100 hours do you know how many special objects the dog was able to construct?

Zombie!

Machine + Tiberium = 1 Spire Tiberium + 1-6 Tiberium Dust = 280'000 Simlns tops

Just let em grow and there you got it, some non-thet-rare easy Simeleons ;)

Dog rules and totally overwhelm Cats in profit.
