Strange files in Sims 3 folder
« on: October 30, 2011, 07:06:17 PM »
So, I've never seen these files before. And I have no idea how they got there or if they're safe to delete. Here's a picture. There's a bunch of them.

Does anybody know what these files are?

I think they are new from the pets patch.

I'll check in a bit. Which folder are they under?

I have those files except mine are called XCPT MDD instead of XCPT MALLORY.
Edit to add I am in the middle of doing a factory reset and those files are in my old Sims 3 folder but not my new one.

Oh yeah.
I think I remember seeing something like that but maybe with a different name.

I don't use my PC much any more, my sims game is on a Mac.  By the looks of the extension (XCPT) (MDMP) I think they may be error crash files.  I would think they could be safely deleted but I would wait until someone with more knowledgable than I to confirm. You could also try moving them out of the folder to your desktop before deleting, start up your game to confirm everything is working fine, if so they should be safe to delete.
Are you able to open them, possibly in notepad or a text editor program to take a look?

edit: actually I just looked in my folder (on a mac) and I have some also.  I am going to do some research on these to see what I come up with.

It wasn't from the patch. I can confirm that. I remember seeing two of them a couple months ago, but I ignored it. Now there are like 10 of them.

I can open the text ones. It's a pretty big file, so I'm not going to copy it. I have had a few errors while saving lately. Do you think it might be related?

Those are definitely from the game crashing or causing an error.  Trust me - I've seen a lot of them lately.  Unless you really want to know what was wrong when you crashed, you can toss them.

I think those files are made every time your game freezes and you need to quit sims the hard way. I have a few of those files as well myself.
Remember the date and time next time your game will freeze and you will see that the files are made at that exact same time.

Oh! I want to count mine!
EDIT: 23. All my game crashes since the beggining. Aww. There were 15 in the first day because I didn't have a cooling pad, I remember that.

I see. Pets has really been pushing my laptop for some reason. My game crashes anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours. So does everyone agree that these files are safe to delete?

According to my own foundings, I haven't found any bad about deleting those.
Though, being extra carefull, and making an extra backup before doing so might not hurt. :)

I removed mine and put them in a folder for the time being on my desktop.  I started my game and have no problems, as of yet.
