Last one on this subject, probably.  We're shovelling all our cheap [silver/gold/copper] metals into making the cheapest possible Compendium.  Ignoring the $500 cost of transfiguring, latest results were ...

4 + 7 small Compendium worth 16,710 generated:
1 Large Supernovium 81,929
1 Large Platinum 1,044
1 Large Compendium 17,765
= 100,738 = profit 84,028

4 + 7 small Supernovium worth 87,398 generated:
1 Large Supernovium 82,285
1 Large Supernovium 93,688
1 Large Silver 105
= 176,078= profit 88,680

Our Sims will never need to work again!
Keep experimenting, it's a whole new game on the Carter XL display  :)

OK, so what you're saying is that your formula works for supernovium and compendium as well as the special metals from foreign countries? In that case it'll be great that you can continue with this 90k profit strategy forever.

A few things:

Firstly, I think there is a typo in the transfiguring guide. It says "Using 10 of any gem type guarantees a large gem. If you used 2 each of four types, your Sim would have a 25% chance of snagging any of those types in large form.". I think it should say "Using 8 of any gem type..."  since later it says 2 of 4 which is 8 and most use the $1200 case also.

Nextly, The recipe does with the 4 + 7 metals does not always give a $75-80000 ingot. Using 11 platinums, i got a $943 large platinum ingot, and a $67,298 supernovium. So i'm willing to guess it is within $65000-85000 range

Thanks for bringing that typo to my attention. I also added to the 80k estimate that it's going to be based on the value of the metals that are used... there's our variation.

After digging in other forums and doing some of my own testing, I've confirmed that the 4+7=Large Supernovium formula actually also works with 2 fewer ingots of metal.  If you fill the Carter XL case with one of the "high" metals, and add just one more ingot to the top left slot (for a stack of 2 ingots), you still get a large ingot of that type plus a large ingot of Supernovium worth about 80k simoleons in addition to a large ingot of the base metal.

Does anyone know what causes 'Brilliant' and 'Crystall Ball' cuts to appear? I have gotten them before and was not sure when they appeared?  ???

Check Carl's Guide.

There he lists all cuts and how many previous cuts you should have done (with the sim in question) in order to unlock that cut. Remember also that some gems can't have all the cuts.

Nice result!  We'll have a play with 2+7 - but what "high metals" did you mean?

Hi everyone!

Slingsby, did you ever try your mercury experiment?  I just did (using the 2 and 7 method) and got these large ingots:

Mercury worth $3,398
Platinum worth $1,223
Iron worth $152
Gold worth $472

FOUR large ingots worth a total of $5,245!  Of course, I needed to transfigure 16 vials to get the 2 mercury ingots, so the total cost was $1,500.  Still, that's better than stacking up four mercury ingots.

I can't seem to replicate those results in my game, reloaded 6 times and still no Supernovium. This is using the 4+7 with iridium

Did you change anything before you tried it again Pam ?

No, I didn't change anything before I had the success.  And your pictures look like you've got it loaded correctly.  Have you tried with the other metals?  Platinum and Mummitomium?  I have to wonder now if EA changed this with Ambitions' release.  Slingsby, if you're still around, can you test this again?  I don't know if I have a current family with the ability.

Update:  I found my family and tested it.  It didn't work in 5 attempts.  I used Platinum and only got a large Platinum ingot and a large Compendium ingot worth $10,000 to $16,000.  That's not a bad deal, but it's not like the awesome Supernovium.  I guess it was a bug that EA fixed.

Yes it definately doesn't work anymore. I've done multiple tests with all the ingots and even stacked more of them and could not get it to work.

Oh, RATS ... I've been away for a month, and now just starting to get accustomed to Ambitions. I'm sorry that 'discovery' has gone - but fortunately there we made piles of Supernovium before we went away, and sold them for many Millions.  I will give it one try today, just in case our game has a 'lucky bug'  ;D

Another thing I noticed while testing my collector's challenge game was that using 5 different cuts of gems with having at least 5 types of one gem does not always result in a skull gem of the majority type. It appears to choose a random gem on the table and make a skull cut gem out of that.

To guarantee that you get the desired skull cut gem you have to fill all 8 slots with the desired gem.

I found that out.  Now when I put 3 of one gem and 7 of random, I got a soulpiece.  What the heck is up with that, lol?
Use to, I would get the skull from the same 3 I used on the top tier.  So now we have to use all of the same gem to get that specific skull gem? I am like everyone else, I can't use the same formula anymore to get the supernovium.  I have not even got one yet, so I keep trying.  I have even gone back to a household that has tons of large ingots and small ones, and nothing.
Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?
