Pets in the Pet Store

Has anyone noticed that you can just 'take' minor pets from the 'limited edition' pet store?
I only managed to play for about an hour and I ended up with one of those yellow birds (valued at around $550) and realised I had 'taken' it from the store. Is this a glitch or has this happened to others?

My legacy founder used them to fund her gardening class.   I always seem to get the same three pets in the store: Yellow-Naped Amazon, Chipmunk and Scarlet King Snake so it's almost always like 1300 simoleons.

anything
