Does anyone use cheats? If yes what kind of cheats? If no do you like cheats? Do you think they help you?

There are people who love cheats and just refuse to play the game without them.  Probably the money cheat the most because you can get huge amounts of Simoleons without working for them.  I prefer not to use cheats for the most part.  It makes the game better for me if I play through everything instead of skipping to the top. :)

I'm with Pam. I mainly use them for testing purposes. I'm just too good at making money at this point. They can be fun if you want to play around with build mode, I have to say that.

Agree with both of you.
Building a house can be really fun and having lots of money lets you build a bigger/better house.
The only reason for me to cheat is when I populate a neighborhood without any time passing.
I did this once and the neighborhood got crowded with my own created sims.
There were a lot of nice homes which cost a lot of money to build.

You can play several families in the same game.  You need to go to the Edit Town option on the menu and select a different household to play.  Be warned, though, that you will lose all of the wishes in your current family, as well as everything in your refrigerator, when you go back to your first family.

And that's exactly why I cheat in those cases.
I don't intend to play all those families, they're just there to fill the town with people.
To prevent them from aging while earning money to buy a home I just cheat so they have a enough money to build a house.
Mostly I give them jobs just for the heck of it.

I think when you first start playing Sims it's very tempting to cheat like mad as soon as you realize it's possible, it's like "Oooh, all the money I want, what's not to like?!".
But in fact I think it takes all the challenge out of the game = boring. I think you can really ruin the experience for yourself by cheating your way to all the goals and rewards in the game instead of figuring out how to do it the hard way. At least that's how it is for me.
Playing God and being able to do whatever you want is not as interesting as you might think.

However I have used a few carefully chosen hacks/mods in the past, usually to fix gameplay issues which were annoying me. That is: to make the game better and more fun, not easier.
For example in Sims 1 I had a whole pack of objects like toilet, shower and bed which were just a little faster to use than they were supposed to be. That gave my sim a little more time to do more interesting things. Also I had a stove which taught cooking when used like they do in Sims 3, in the first game I think the only way to learn cooking was to read about it which was just silly.
And when I started playing Sims 2 I was getting seriously annoyed with the insane number of friends sims had to have to get promoted in some carreers, I felt like the game was dictating how I had to play. So I used a hack to make my sims instant friends with everyone they met or something like that. That way a loner sim could get promotions too and I could play how I liked. I love how they've changed the promotion system in Sims 3, now I don't need that cheat anymore. :)

In Sims 3 one thing that's starting to irritate me is how the lifetime wish is so dependent on traits, I'd like to be able to mix it up.
It might be fun to have a kleptomaniac wanting to be a cop or an inappropriate politician with no social skills or an evil, insane surgeon. :o :D
And why should a Renaissance Sim be workaholic? The workaholic trait gives an advantage to sims with jobs but a renaissance sim needs to build lots of skills so might be better off not even having a job but instead doing things like gardening or painting at home. It makes no sense.

So I might soon be looking into a way of choosing the lifetime wish for any sim.

The Sims is not like real life though, in real life I would love a money cheat. :)

I use cheats just a teensy bit.  When I build a house for a sim, I leave it partly unfinished so they can afford to move in.  Then I give them like one motherlode, finish the house, decorate and from there they are on their own.  I usually give them next grade up from the cheapest stuff.  I love the glass in the cheap shower but don't like how it starts giving out with cold water. :P

I have used testingCheatsEnabled on sparingly to modify traits of townies.  Sorry, I just don't care much for slob or childish.  :-\

All sims must make money in some manner...I refuse to give them simeloens.  :D  Usually the only time I use kaching is when they have had all the stuff disappear out of their inventory and I replace the cost, or if some lil sim has gone and gotten themselves preggers behind my back and I have to build a nursey. ::)

But I definitely agree where cheating is concerned.  Using it too much can make gameplay way too boring.

Exactly! That would just spoil them. :D

I avoid cheats most of the time but like you say, sometimes you can use them a teensy bit to fix problems or things you don't like.

I've always used the money cheat. Mainly because I have a bad habit of creating a sim or family, building them an awesome home, decorating it and then just never play them again. I don't want to take the time to build up the family's fortune if I know I'll never play them.

I also use it with my dedicated sim. Having the sim go to work always bored me (Though I do like that in Sims 3 you a few options on job performance) so I'd have them max out skills and they socialized a lot and never had to worry about money. Sounds like the life to me! Only when I was bored with this, did I give them a job.

I can't say I don't understand cheating, I've done plenty myself in sims 1 and 2.
I just think not having a Job and being instant friends with anyone (without the lifetime rewards) takes away everything you have to work on in this game.

games with cheats are only interesting for a week... sims is nice when there is crisis in their life... when you struggle to make some 100$ for some food. make the most of it...
i remember for a sim of mine my nephew used motherlod... i deleted that sim lol started over with a new one... and was so **ed also.
wish there were no cheats for all games... it`s just a bummer!

Neh.. not all games are boring with cheats.
GTA comes to mind.
I like to start up the game and get the biggest gun to randomly shoot things.
I can do this for hours  ;)

Or making hard to get stuff/vehicles appear and wreak havoc and have fun.
It can be fun using cheats because the challenge is still there as well.
