I think it must just be three best friends. My sim tried with one best friend, then two and finally when she had three, he said yes. I would hazard a guess and say it doesn't matter if the three are all horses or all dogs etc, just that there be at least three.
Not sure about the white female, black male thing. I haven't seen a white unicorn yet and you can't tell what they are till they move in anyway.

Okay, can anyone confirm this for me? My sim adopted a black unicorn. It was male. Are the white ones female and the black ones male then? Or does it just vary? Also, my sim had one sim best friend, three horse BFFs, and one dog BFF--for those who are trying to figure out the requirements.

1. Question. No I just got a black Unicorn and it's a female. My best guess is that the one with the beard and lion tails are male although I haven't gotten one like this yet. I have my White Female Unicorn pregnant so I'll see if it's a boy and it has a beard/lion tail.
I also think it's just 3 BFFs.
:D 2 Unicorns now!
Blossom(black) and Sparkle(white).

Sorry about the dark picture. I think they only come out at night, or I can only find them at night.

Okay, I think you're right.

Here's a picture of my unicorn. He has the lion tail and beard.

He's cute! That's the one I was aiming for! But I found Blossom. I love the lion tail and beard!

Not sure about the beard though, because Lizzy has cross-bred a unicorn with a horse and got a female unicorn who grew a beard when she aged.. the thread  (and pics) is http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=7272.0

It might be different with breeding. I'm just wondering if there is any definitive way of telling a male unicorn apart from a female unicorn in the wild. I just looked at one of my unicorn though the Edit Saddle interaction. It looks like the beard is only used for unicorns in general. I'll get a picture up soon. The beard is a selectable thing under the unicorn tab. Also, you can change the horn color! I think that when breeding, the use of beard is random. So far, I haven't seen a female unicorn with a lion tail, though.

Edit: Here are the pics.

That's cool! Thanks for letting us know Moon! My new unicorn was just born, she looks like his father and is an unicorn. It's a cutie pie, I named it Nutnut for some strange reason. I'll post pics later, too busy playing.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool. I saved a couple different horn color combinations and now I'm wondering if they'll show up on new unicorns that spawn.

I've heard to get a unicorn you have to be friends or adopt a bunch of animals  (preferably wild) Mine showed up on my property while my Sim was asleep so up she got and we soon became friends I eventually adopted her and now shes a playable unicorn, I've just had my first foal from her - a little boy - very excited.

Anyone notice how you have the option to "ignite" things as a unicorn, her horn and eyes glow red and shoots fire - of course once you've done that you can then use the unicorn to put it out (her eyes/horn glow blue for this one) and she makes a little rain cloud above the fire.  They can teleport (eyes/horn glow white) and your unicorn will actually get a want to teleport (much like horses get the want to 'graze')  You can also bless fauna (haven't figured out what benefit this has besides cool pictures), and of course run leaving streaks of light etc.

:)

My First Unicorn Yayay!  ;D Where was it? In a rock.  :-\ I was in HS and the Unicorn was glitched inbetween some rocks by the waterfall. The Rainbow thing was only just poking up and if I wasn't sending a Sim to fish there I would have missed it! It was a white one.

No. The problem was the Unicorn was stuck in the Rock and couldn't get out.  :( I could watch him but that was it, otherwise he was stuck.

I had a ton of bffs of all kinds (sims, horses, wild horses, dogs, cats, strays) and I still couldn't get my bff unicorn to move in. After I read some of the posts here I thought, "Maybe I should increase the number of pets I have," and I adopted one more, bringing my pet count to three. Success!

So in an effort to further understanding:

1 familiar horse

2 human bfs
1 wild horse bf
1 horse bf
1 stray cat bf
1 dog bf

2 horse bffs
3 pet horse bffs

And none of it counted untill I adopted the third horse. (It was the fourth wild horse I adopted, so it might be the wild life skill. Is there any way to tell what level it is?)
Oh, and my riding skill was maxed, and I still got the message.
