I'm not Wevee, but for as far as I know having a cat, dog and horse friend are a must for being able to adopt a unicorn.

Sorry, I have had no cats or dogs on this save game.  This has been completely horses to play around with the riding skill and the super max skills for it.

edit: as further note about the unicorn, if you teleport too much too quickly it gets a negative moodlet called 'power shortage', it won't allow use of magical skills for a 4 hour period.  Also, the unicorn has max skill on jumping and racing.

I was not happy with the other 2 videos I did so I shot another with the best quality I can do to show the gallop animation and the teleporting.

I just adopted a unicorn so I will share what I have and haven't done to try and get to the bottom of what you need to get one. I am not friends with a cat or dog, nor have I been. I have a few sim friends, a 8 horse BFF's including the unicorn, and the only small pet I had was a rat who died on me after a few days because I probably forgot to feed it. I did adopt 3 wild horses previous to the unicorn and get the little achievement for that. I also got the charisma achievement for having 10 best friends (pets count towards that).

If I had to make a guess, being friends with "all types" might mean a sim, a pet, and a wild horse (not the unicorn)?

Hey, this might sound odd, but do you have a human friend?
My sim doesn't and I got the same message. I'm going to be trying to make one to see if that makes a difference.

Oh! This sounds odd but yeah, you are right. The sim hadn't had any friends because all the action was focused to my lovely beagle. Anyway I lost the unicorn but next time when I'll see him, I'll be prepared with a bunch of pets including: normal horses (4 I guess?), cats, dog AND human friends. I will consider the wild horses but I haven't succed to get one of them because all had rejected me. Well I have to work for it, I guess.

I read on the Sims3.com forums that in order to adopt a unicorn, your sim must have 3 dog, cat, or horse BFFs.  It can be any combination of 3 animals (one of each, all cats, etc), but the relationship must be BFF.

Does anyone know how long unicorns live?  Do they have a similar lifespan to horses?

Wait......you mean our animals can die just like in rl?   This is NOT a happy thing.  I will grieve too hard.  Can we feed them ambrosia or get them a drink from the magic fountain?

They live longer then horses, the exact time I can't be sure.  The one I added to my household was an adult with 82 days to age to elder on a standard length (90 days) game.

Clearly my riding immortal will have to adopt a unicorn, provided I do a riding immortal. I think it's managable to do so, but I'm not 100%. But a creature that long-lived would make a great companion for an immortal, even if it would take up a pet slot.

Sorry Joria.  All the pets including the wild animals have lifespans just like our Sims.  You can adjust their lifespans under options like you would your Sims as well.   Pets cannot be fed ambrosia and they do not drink from the magic fountain.  However, they do have an LTR for a Young Again Potion.

I can already tell I'm going to be more upset when my first pet dies even more than I was when my first sim died...

Thank you for the info about unicorn life spans, Wevee

Well that's wrong because my Sim Kat has 2 best friend stray cats, 2 horses, 1 unicorn and 1 dog.

Okay, I think having a sim friend is part of the mechanic for sure. I tried adopting a second unicorn just now and got that message about needing to be friends to all creatures. I checked my relationships and all sims had dropped down to acquaintance. I still had many horse BFF's, but no regular sims. That has to be part of it. I don't know if you need to be friends, good friends, or best friends, because I had a best friend sim when I adopted my first unicorn.

I was wondering if any of the households already have a unicorn as I have not yet looked?

I have not seen a unicorn but hope i will soon.

Well that's wrong because my Sim Kat has 2 best friend stray cats, 2 horses, 1 unicorn and 1 dog.

Are they just best friends, or best friends forever?  When they become BFFs, you get a pop-up message saying so, and when you hover over the icon under the relationship bar, the text will specify that they are BFFs.
