What happens to orphan kids in the Sims 3?
« on: March 05, 2010, 08:57:38 PM »
I know it is a morbid question, but I was just wondering what would happen to the kids if both parents died prematurely.

For example, let's say that the mom died when the kid was a toddler of drowning, and the kid's dad died when the kid was a child because of fire.

Would the kid be taken away? What if you had a legacy planned with it? Would it change your active household?

I am not a morbid person, I promise you. I'm just wondering if anybody has had this situation come about.

I'm almost certain you get saddled with a social worker.

I should have taken a screenshot, but the message that comes up says that since there are no more adults living in the household, the CHILD age kid will go with the social worker. I would assume that it would be similar for any age less than or equal to child.

TEENS are allowed to continue on as I have walled in many parents of a teen to work around the game imposed limit of no teens living on their own straight out of Create A Sim.  I think self-sustainability is the key factor for why teens can continue on.

Children and under can also stay with a teen after the parents have passed on. I did some research on this out of curiousity myself. :) It's really REALLY hard to deal with a family like that, (Homework, schooling, regular toddler/baby needs, a part time job for money) it's really a great challenge.

I think this was a glitch, but I say it anyways in case it was not: In China, there were two children that were left alone after their parents died from old age. While I was there, nothing happened and they lived normally, but when I got home, they both immediately aged to teenagers and then continued aging normally from there! I know that it wasn't normal aging since one of the children was my own daughter who just had become a child and the other kid was way older than her, so they shouldn't have aged at the same time.

Maybe this works differently in the normal neighbourhoods, but this was what happened in China! :)

I think all the rules change in the foreign countries.  Nothing over there is "normal" compared to your Sims' home town.

Yeah, and then it's also such uncommon scenario so it's maybe not the first place the developers search for glitches in.

I have a preference for starting as a teen.  Just to make things more difficult, I have done my own version of a flat broke teen scenario where they literally start out with NOTHING except an empty plot of land to work with, just to see how well they turn out by the time they age from young adult to full adult.

Survival in the game is easy mode due to the vast amount of ways to make money outside of jobs.  It seems to revolve around the restrictions you place on yourself for gameplay.  Getting things going with nothing except a part time job is rough.  Foraging for food in the parks and selling fish takes longer than one would think, yet if one simply goes rock collecting, money will be no problem very quickly.  It's all on how you like to play the game.

I love doing this with teens. I love finding the limits on ages and I wanted to see what it would be like to have a teen mother (without actually having a child with the teen) So I settled for teen stuck with toddler baby sister after an "accident" death of their father. It was almost too easy to make money, however the needs were a little hard to deal with, but I figured they would have more problems money-wise than needs-wise. That was a bit of a disappointment, and a little less fun. What did you think of putting a teen on a lot with nothing, because I might try that, but only if it's a challenge.

Yeah, teen "parents" aren't too tough in this game as you can just skip school and midlife crisis away any "bad" traits you get for failing school.  My toddlers always come before silly school, since making money without a job is a cakewalk.

With all the experience I have living (read as urban camping) on a plot of land and building a life from the spoils of gardening in SIMS.... Now I just have to translate that into the real world.  Anyone have any arable land they can spot me while I have my real life imitate my SIMS 3 characters?

I have a married Sims who fathered a baby with one of the town women and I was wondering how or if I can get "custody" of the baby without having to marry or move the baby's mother into my home. I thought about inviting her over to my house and then killing her off, but I have noticed that when I have run into her around town, she never brings the baby with her. I visit her at her house and she still has the baby, usually laying on the floor and I have even found the baby laying in the grass outside of the house while she is inside, and she doesn't even have a crib for the baby. I'm thinking that if I invite her over and she doesn't bring the baby with her and I kill her off, then the baby would disappear from my game.

So, does anybody have any ideas or suggestions? (Thanks, in advance)

I don't understand why the social worker can take kids out of your active household, but not with the townspeople when they don't take care of their kids. It would be nice if EA could make it so that the kids that are taken away from neglectful parents could be placed for adoption and you can have the option to choose to adopt them into your active household.

Yeah, I've read other player's complaints about the parenting AI of town Sims. It doesn't seem to be much better than what you might see from wild animals in nature.

If you can't move just the baby in 'edit town' (I've never tried it, so it may work, but wouldn't surprise me if it didn't) I would say that you'll have to have the woman move in into your household before you kill her. Sorry.

Actually edit town is the easiest way.  As long as there is a viable 'adult' (Teen or older) in the destination house it will allow you to take custody.  Real life should be so easy.  I think the real world calls it kidnapping.  :'(

Yes, use Edit Town and split the household where the baby currently lives.  Bring the baby to your household and leave everyone else where they are.
