I have a laptop and I was thinking of installing a sims-unrelated program, but would doing so significantly slow the game down? What's the difference in your experience?

It depends more on how much space you will have left, after those 1.2 are added.

I personally recommend having at least 5 gb free for The Sims 3's virtual memory usage. About 7 should be fine, though. Just make sure you save often and close the game every 1 hour or so, and let your computer rest for 3-5 minutes, then open the game again and continue playing.

I guess it depends on how much space you have on your computer, I got a 500gb hd drive, it's nearly full, but gameplay isn't slow, just loading time

Okay, I guess that's worth it, since I don't play that much. I just like taking pics.
