Question about number of pets/sims

On the left side of the screen, the sims boxes appear and you cn have up to eight. Will a pet take up one of those eight spots or will you be able to have eight sims and pets? Thanks for any help.

Are you sure, Moons?  I thought we would still have our maximum of 8 in the household and that the pets will take up a space.

Just to confuse everyone, I thought it was a total of 10 sims/pets and max 8 sims and 6 pets.

sportsfan is correct - you can have a maximum of 8 sims OR 6 pets - the total of both cannot exeed 10. So if you have 8 sims, you can only have 2 pets, and if you have 6 pets you can only have 4 sims.

So, there will be 10 slots on the left side of the screen instead of the 8 slots we have now?

I'm not sure how exactly they'll organise it on the screen - nothing I've read mentions that. In sims2, there was a second branch to the right of the sims branch for pets, so maybe they'll do something similar this time.

Okay, I got this.
When pets come out you will be able to have 8 sims, 6 pets. Got it? But the max of both together is 10. You have to make combinations, 5 sims 5 pets. 4 sims 6 pets (no more than six)  8 sims, 2 pets. Get it?

Just complementing what Pally and Vampire said:

There is a total of 10 controllable, living beings (which includes Sims, dogs, cats, horses and unicorns) allowed. Out of those 10, a maximum of 8 can be Sims, and a maximum of 6 can be pets, albeit not both at the same time, as that would exceed the limit of 10.

The pets' frames will be shown as a second vertical branch, to the right of the Sims' vertical bar.

Smaller pets such as rodents, snakes, birds and lizards do not count for the limited number.

Oh, goodness. I've read so many different things about how many there are going to be that I guess I've gotten it all muddled up! Thanks for the clarification. Sorry about any confusion on my part.
