Callboxes and houses: they work!
« on: September 26, 2011, 04:10:29 AM »
I set a callbox right outside of my fenced off house with a electronic gate and it works just like in an apartment. Sims you invite over go to the callbox and call you then your given the option to buzz them in or ignore them. My rich sims can really act rich hehe. ;D

I want to do that but can't seem to get the gate to stick? I've tried various fence types.  I do have late night and do have a 'custom gate with call box' in the build list. I just can't get it to show green for placing? It stays red no matter where I try it.  I even tried setting up several different fence sections at various points and still couldn't get it to go green and stick. Oh and yes I have tried with a complete fence all the way around the house but well in from the edge of the plot.

Anyone know how to help this please? Thanks in advance

You have to make sure there is nothing obstructing the opening of the gate. I had that issue with low fencing around the sidewalks. Had to remove them and some plants near the gate opening. The gates open wide, so you can't have any obstruction near them.

I allowed room for them to open to right-angle.... is that not far enough? When you try to place it there's highlighted squares attached to the gate and they were on empty ground... apart from the fence of course [and I have tried with fence, without fence, with half wall, with full wall.]

I did get cheesed off with paparazzi earlier and walled the guy in... he just vanished as soon as my sim went to bed. I so do not understand why he found it so amusing and so happy while inside a small square of wall that was undecorated on the inside.. LOL so odd of him.

For now I've edited to make one side of the house exposed and moved the front door there.  Hoping that'll hold them until I get this gate thing sorted.

 :)

you could always use moveobjects to place it, just leave enough room for it to open/close on both sides

EvaBrown, How far from the edge of the lot is your fence? To place the electric gate you need at least 2 blocks from the edge where the other gates you only need 1 block.

Rough guess would be 7 or 8 squares from the front edge of the lot and pavement.
I put her home on pinnacle point so she has tons of spare room. The idea was fence in with the half wall type fence [has metalwork on top of wall] leaving spare room all around the edge to match the appearance of the surroundings with ground/trees/bushes etc. [If I could figure out how I'd post a picture... but I'm very very new to all this]   As for 'move objects' I don't know how yet but I'll probably find that on these forums somewhere... gradually exploring my way around it and loving all the info...  ;D

If I understood that right you used one of the walls from the Half Walls section instead of a fence. If so that is the problem, the gates won't work with half walls only with the fences.

Is the terrain flat that you are trying to place it on?

I tried with fencing too.... tried many ways...

Terrain I wasn't sure if flat or not even though it looked it, so I tried laying flooring over it and that altered the level of it... then deleted the floor and tried fence and gate again... right now I'm fed up of trying and giving up for today [it is after 8pm here now and I'm watching Xfactor :P]

Thanks for all the advice... maybe I'll try again tomorrow... or I may just  give up.. not sure yet.
