Tips and Tricks
« on: September 21, 2011, 09:29:17 PM »
I've been looking around the site looking for a tips and tricks section for build and buy mode but haven't been able to find one. Is there one around that I'm overlooking somewhere?

For example one I use a lot is when using cheat codes is when you open the cheat console if you tap the up arrow it will insert the last cheat used in the box with the cursor at the end of the line. Handy for cheats like constrainfloorelevation. If you just turned it on and want to turn it back off, open the cheat console, tap the up arrow key, hit the backspace key to delete the n and type in ff and hit enter.

And one I just found out today, which was what got me looking for more.
When wanting to place multiple items that don't normally stick to your cursor like End Tables, items from Decor, Treadmills, ect. If you hold the shift key down when you place it there will be another one on your cursor waiting to be placed.

So this is a thread for builders to share tips that helps them furnish and give unique and realistic taste, I'm not the best builder out there, But I thought everyone would share any  useful tips, When you put them, I'll add them to the list here, with your name next to them, it will make

Use Rugs : I find that using anywhere, placing them well, you can give color pops to the room, and give it an aesthetic feeling to it, when using geometric or themed patterns, you'll have to take time to find a good pattern that suites the house, and recolor it,

Using End and Coffee tables to kill the dead space : dead space is what I call the empty space in hallways, behind doors and any 1x2 or 1x1 square that is empty, and you ca't put something useful in it, usually an end table with a plant, rocks and gems, or a good looking lamp can fix it,

Avoid Neon Schemes a : unless you are building really modern, or a club bar, neon colors are to avoid in homes, they give an Uncomfortable feeling to the viewer

Paint the ceiling : yep you can do it, tilt the camera using down arrow in the rotating panel, and use flooring tool to place it, if you have ambitions, there are specified  ceiling tiles, you can always use the 0 § woods, the don't look too ugly, and they will help you make screenshot look good when you have a limited budget

Most Improtant tip : fi you want to make somthing unique, always make researches, look for building Ideas, the web is full of tutorials, just taking some time, and you'll find useful tips that help you

Not All rooms have to be closed by doors : A room is a defined space which has  a specified Function, however how it's defined is up to you, you don't have to use walls and doors, you can use arches  , the give a great look to the interior, you can use half walls, you can even use pools, all of thees can make your house better

Take your time when choosing Wallpapers and Floors : Yest it feels good to just use simple plain wallpaper and wooden floors, but taking your time with creat a style, you can make some pretty interesting stuff on walls, especially if you are building with a limited budget, you can try using a small geometric pattern to make the room looking intresting, without using a lot of paintings

When Placing Doors And Windows : Always keep a tile of free space nxt to doors and windows, having a door right in the edge of a room isn't very good,to keep an ergonomic Feeling to the place allowing you to avoid inappropriate use of space

Choosing Wall Covering and  floor tiles: For wall covering, you could always use plain simple paint, however using one of the paint or masonry patterns can give your hour walls an appealing looks, and allowing the furnishing to pop out, however in starter homes, where money is an issue, I would suggest using panelings, giving a small geometric pattern to the middle section, a paint pattern to the lower section, and choosing a good wooden pattern for separators, can make your walls  art, there for no needing for a lot of paintings to make them pretty, but always remember using appropriate colors,
For Floor tiles, you can use tringular floor tiles using ctrl-f, it can allow you to make some very good looking floors, by using a pattern on simple flooring, you can "fake" a Rug, good for saving money on starters,

If someone would help organised tips by categories your welcome, I don't have much time thees days, but I'll be putting tips as I remember/find them

Oh that's cool, I actually just learned the up arrow thing for the cheat box a while ago.

I only know the basic stuff like using ctrl+f give you the triangle tiles, and when you hold alt when placing an object you have more freedom and can rotate it at more angle, etc,.

I tend to use black and white, gray for wall paint. But I found that Color Wizards and Color Schmes are very helpful. The hex codes are spot on. I reccomend using them a lot. Specially when stuck.
