I apologize for stepping in and removing the link, but I'm careful about what we link to from this forum because many of those mod sites offer downloads that break the Sims 3's Teen rating.
Yeah, I would have to agree that the site in question does include a mod that has some (removable) features that simply puts the game at an M rating. While the features are removable, the site even says on the download link that it is not for people under 18 years of age. I would be in favor of Carl's decision to remove the link as that site is simply "too old" for the some of the users of this site (believe me, I have used that site before, but do not any longer because of it's content and the environment of the forum).

Thanks for showing me how to check the FPS.  I have a FPS of about 220 at the moment with the game just sitting there.  My video card is an XFX Radeon 5850 725mhz, 1 GB GDDR5.  Should I worry?

Worry? depends on your ventilation and a whole lot of other factors. Does your computer get noisy on the loading screens?.
You do happen to have a pretty good card and loosing 300$+ over a design oversight isn't fun at all, so why take the risk?. Try forcing vsync and triple buffering on your ati's settings for the sims 3 and it's expansions (i haven't had an ati but it should have a way to config such things and to specify particular settings for each game).

I've got lots of ventilation, and I don't hear much from the box at any time.  It's an amazingly quiet machine.  I have no idea how to accomplish "forcing vsync and triple buffering", but it sounds cool.
Seriously, though, I think I will give the aforementioned programs a try, and see what happens.  I am hoping they will stop the CTD too!  Or is that just hoping too much?

If your CTD is due to heat, psu being unable to feed your card, or the program going nuts due to uncapped fps, then it would stop it... in theory.
As for forcing vsync, you should have an ATI icon on either your taskbar or your control panel, can't help more than that since i haven't owned an ati, perhaps another forumer can help you there.

Erf, yeah, TG, I got to the ATI Catalyst Control Centre, but it's all beyond me.  I used to be a fairly competent computer owner, but since I've been using a monolithic Toshiba laptop for the last five years, I am SO out of the loop I just don't have a clue anymore.  This is my first desktop machine in a very long time.  Granted, I did choose the components separately, but I paid a geek to assemble them for me.  Years ago I would have done it myself.  So technoweenie stuff I'll have to leave to the kids I can hire.  Within reason, of course. I don't mind mucking about in there.  I just hate feeling stupid while I do so!

Tgblank,  I had the squealing noise in loading screens - i've now locked v sync and the noise has gone - could you tell me what the noise was and whether it has/could have damaged my card?  I only bought the card 3 weeks ago so it has only been used with this game a handful of times...just a little concerned my new card could already be damaged :-(

It's an nvidia 460gtx.  Many thanks

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard on my 2006 iMac it overheats all the time when playing The Sims and The Sims Medieval. I installed smcFanControl and crank it all the way up to play games. No more overheating!

Thanks so much for this post - it helped me figure out what was going on.  And a gentle reminder - you should still enter support tickets for things like this.  It is a game flaw.   Carl's board is a true blessing, but if you get resolved here, you should still open a ticket so they will work on the problem.
Thanks all!

Hello - sorry to bump an old thread... I found this thread linked at the Sims 3 community.

TGBlank - When you say force vsync, should it be forced on or off? My NVIDIA card is set to off already. This is a great thread (and a great forum) glad I found it!

Thanks,

-Lisa

First you must know what your fps (rramerate per second)  is. Type 'fps on' in the cheat bar and in the top right corner you will see the fps.

Basically I play with v-sync and triple buffering on... My card still overheats but only with sims so I'll be looking into this fps thing! Thanks!

152 fps is way to high,  vsync and tripple buffering must both be on.
It will lock the fps on 60 fps. That is ok, 152 fps will harm your card.
