I planted the few Omni seeds I got after completing the last challenge, but the rest of my Omni plant seeds have come from the mailbox so started out as normal.  Since my gardening Sim has the super green thumb trait and the green thumb lifetime reward, plus level 10 gardening skill, her Omni plants start out as Excellent.  I thought any Omni plants were supposed to duplicate what you feed it regardless of quality of the Omni plant (at least this is what Carl's guide says)?

My Omnis only duplicate fish and books perfectly.  All fruit and veggies decrease in quality.

However, you can send your Sims on vacation and order Omni seeds every day at their vacation home to save for the garden at home.

For the Bad Apples challenge, I tried feeding a bad quality apple to an Omni plant and the ones it produced were actually higher quality.  I got a normal apple and a couple of nice apples.  So, I can't say for sure that the Omni plant produces lower quality fruits and vegetables.  I've got a garden with several Omnis and will do some tests.

Maybe the Omni plant just produces average fruits and vegetables then?  I fed mine only perfect life fruit, perfect pomegranates, perfect eggs, and perfect Cranerlet Nuala grapes.  The grapes did come out at perfect quality, but the others came out as very nice or great quality only.

I have a garden with 80 perfect life plants now, so I guess I will only use my Omnis for fish and books.

No career even comes close to the profitability of a level 10 gardener.

I take it you haven't met our own Metropolis Man yet.  Hehe.

What does he do to make money?  You fill an entire 60x60 lot with omni plants and it takes all day for several people to migrant farmer your plot (Gotta love basement homes)  You rake in more than any job you can go to that I know of, depending on what you feed your omni plant. (Only getting like 2 new seeds a day is a hindrance after a while though)

I have been there done that on buying all the properties in town (getting paid once a week sucks - ditto for writing books - royalties for 6 weeks? UGH! --- This is a masterpiece of literary excellence people!  PAY ME FOEVAH!  ::) )  Growing books was pretty interesting for a while - looking for the most expensive book that would grow was fun... as is nectarmaking (my wine cellar would cost me crazy amounts if I still had to pay bills...  NO BILLS EVER FTW!)

Come to think of it, I think I'll make a new thread on that topic to see what kind of daily cashflow peeps can wring out of SimTown.

I think it's guitar as the top choice, with painting and writing coming in behind.

Edit: This conversation is continued at http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=299.0 Discuss it there.

Ok, I feel dumb, how do you fertilize your omni plant with books?  I have a bunch of books in my inventory and it doesn't give me the option to use it as fertilizer.  :(

It is not under the menu 'use as a fertilizer'. To feed the omni plant there is a separate menu in the pie menu that is something like 'feed with...' (isn't sure about the exact name of the submenu since I have the Swedish version of the game).

When you click on the mature Onni plant, one of the options is "Feed."  You'll get a long list of everything in your inventory that can be fed to the Omni plant.  Beware, though, because if you have a lot of items, the list will take a good deal of time to load and it can get frustrating.

I'm sorry if this is off topic , but I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread , and seeing as you mentioned it - have you managed to complete this challenge? I always have the problem of them upgrading to a higher quality as soon as I plant them.

I've never been able to complete the Bad Apple opportunity.  I tried it rather recently, too, thinking maybe it had been fixed with all the new patches.  But no.  I would get one bad apple and two or three better ones.  I think it's still bugged.

It's possible to do, just rather hard, specially for super green thumb gardeners.

A solution is to make a non-gardener sim do the bad apple planting, growing & collecting. Another is to hunt for harvestable apple trees for the worst quality you can find.

Also: omnis duplicate non-produce perfectly, but produce (fruits, vegetables, etc) quality ignores the original input and is instead affected by the PLANT quality and gardening-related things, just like regular plants.

Yeah, I've got the "feed with..." button and I clicked it but the only things showing up in my inventory are the fruits and vegetables that I would normally be able to fertilize with.  The books and other things that I bought specifically for the omni plant that other people have mentioned here do not show up in the list. :(

I tried that and still couldn't complete the opportunity.

Are you sure the books are in your Sim's inventory and not accidently put in a bookcase or something?  What other things did you buy for the Omni plant?

I figured it out Pam!  Apparently the plants weren't quite mature yet and all I was getting was the fertilize options that every other normal plant gets.  Once they "aged up" to mature I was able to get the feed option.  It helped to know that it took some time to load if there were lots of inventory options because it most certainly DID take forever to pop up the menu which again made me question if I was doing something wrong.  Anyway, thanks for your help!  :)
