@ SimBlip: Actually, my adventure board was glitched: just one adventure a day generated on it... But I persevered!
I do intend Linden and Orchid to go to Egypt while they can go together, so there's more Orchid/Linden yet to come ^^

@MarianT: I will have to remember this next time someone needs skilling in there.
...I loved her ponytail, but it just looked somehow 'off' to me. I don't know; something about it doesn't work with the shape of her face quite as well. Maybe I'll change my mind later and have her grow her hair out again. We shall see.

But first, some fashion!

Linden's is pretty ordinary, much of it styled like old stand-bys. His color choices have, I think, somehow gotten paler as time goes on. I tend to dress Linden and Heath warm, like it's cold outside. I just think they're both guys who want to feel cozy.

I preffered the sleeved version, but this will just have to do.

And for her adventure-wear, something a little...Ninja-themed. Cat-burglar-y.  I have no idea where it's from, actually; it just showed up when I unlocked outfits.

The rest of it's fairly ordinary...

Except for her athletic wear, which is Genie-style.

Sorry for the delays -- I'll try to get through my backlog more quickly...

Chapter 62: She Has Gone the Distance

It was another morning, another wedding. Another bit of power into the cosmos, waiting for me to use it.
Still so far away...But it seems that, for one more time, the wedding and the power will collide.

The bride is nervous. She is wearing a dress especially for the occaison. She has pipe-dreamed from her wedding. And suddenly it became a dream, and she feels the air has taken on the water qualities of a dream. She tries not to think, tries not to wake up.

"Yes, Yes..." Aster croons over her daughter's final ice sculpture. "It's so close... I wonder what she'll know, knowing this...Knowing the forever crawling through her blood... Another one down...."

And with that done, it's time. It's something that must be done, before she can see her son wed. It seems, to her, traditional, after one generation. Grandiose, after being carried out in silence. Nothing at all like a solitary girl, pooling energy for two beings, herself and I, to escape their rotten shells of existence.

Like her grandmother and mother before her, she takes a moment to look over her life. Her ice sculptures from the start and ends of her life flank behind her, giving the room a chill. That bold person, who set out to live without compromise...
Now, she cannot help but wonder how compromised her life became. And yet, compromise or no, she does not have regrets. This is enough, and in the room of her life, she puts her hands on her hips and laughs triumphantly.

"I have won! All life lies behind me, beaten in the dirt!...But...Before all you Orchids, past and future, weep... Alexander cannot weep, for the worlds to conquer are infinite!" She crows. She still has plans -- many, now, would not. Is that...The human spirit? What a puzzle.

She begins her meal, the taste slamming and sparking across her tongue.

"Ooh, sparkly," She exclaims, "Kind of sweet-and-sour...It's odd."
She's no oracle, no maddened waif -- she doesn't catch it, then, the power flowing into the world, wrecking it to pieces. Soon, I'll be able to make my power felt...Before the next one's done, certainly.

In the meanwhile, there's a wedding to get to.

Heath's face suits a sort of nervous smile; Mildred, used to bottling, is more subdued. Both, at any moment, expects something to stop them. Expects the sky to fall.
Expects something to come in and ruin everything, because there's no world in which they are meant to be so happy. Because if this succeeded, if this one moment didn't fall to pieces, some part of them would be happy in this moment forever.
That's what they believe.

Ariel looks on with all the wonder and pride of someone who knows what they were really seeing. The angels of the Silver City were the first to realize a crucial fact: a world cannot be created alone. To make world, to make it whole, there must be at least two.
And humans were the first to realize that worlds are also made in the heart -- that love is the sensation of a world coming into blossom between two people.
And Ariel knows this, and the sight is enough to make her weep.

She isn't the only observer who knows more than flesh, or I -- the ghosts crowd around on the edge of reality, jostling for space.
"If she chickens out...I'll find a way to wring her neck!" The Specter of Billy shouts.
"She won't. It's her only chance." The ghost of the doll-girl smiles faintly, perhaps recalling her own story of love not siezed.

They have become accustomed to the feeling of my presence. Except for one moment, they've all but forgotten me.
"That doesn't matter. She loves him. He loves her. That'll keep them both going in the face of any darkness," says Reed.
"But there's a lot of darkness coming for them. She's not got so long..." Norman, oldest of them all, says.
"And for their little one..." Elain, the most silent of them, whispers. None of them can bear that.
They fall into a lonely silence.

"MMmm..." Billy mutters. Everyone shushes him.
It's starting.

"Mildred Oakley, you are the most amazing thing to happen in my life -- a life, I'm sure, that'll be full of amazing things. And I want to share them with you, forever. I want to face the future with you at my back, in front of me, and...By my side."

"And...Gosh, Mildred. I love you. And that's why I promise... I'll always have you in my heart."

"And you'll always be the one who fills up my life with happiness, and the only one I'll want to be with forever."

The hearts from the arbor begin to tumble like snow -- the world created, that existed only for the two of them...Was a world full of heart-shaped snowflakes, full of the sudden chill of a fresh ring on the finger, pulsing with their heartbeats together.

""And with this ring, I thee wed.""

And it was the fulfillment of all their wishes.

The rest of the day was a flurry of partying, of cutting cake,

Wedding day congratulations,

Pre-consumation excitement...

And all sorts of fireworks.

And, in the darkness, the voices of the ghosts reaches me....
"Do you think...Mister...Maybe you can do something, to help matters along when their little one has less time with its mother?"
I laugh, a sound no being alive has ever heard.
"I can't stop death...But...Perhaps there's something, to make the world...Less alone." After all, one more thing I can throw in the face of the Silver City, particularly this one, will certainly help me out.

And anyway, there will, with certainty...

Be a little one soon.

This was well worth waiting for. The voices of the spectres and the philosophy about 'worlds' added much depth.
The bride and groom looked absolutely stunning.
I especially love the close-up picture of Ariel.
Congratulations on your Third mmortal! :)

Okay I've been silently stalking this lovely story for some time now, always meaning to comment but never getting around to it then I end up forgetting. (This is what happens when you read a Dynasty at 3am). I am very much in awe of your wonderful storytelling and characters but after reading this chapter I am a little confused about one thing.

Who is telling this chapter? I thought it was Aster, it sounds like her style and she was the only person not mentioned in this chapter, but is it the man the ghosts are talking to? Is it Azrael? Is he the one telling this chapter per chance? (Azrael is a beautiful name btw, I once had a cat named that & yes I do know what it means, I know my angels quite well).

Or is it actually Aster describing the conversation between the man (Azrael?) and the ghosts? *Is confused*

Edit: I think it's the latter, that makes much more sense now I think about it.

Wonderful update. I love the heart-shaped wedding area! And congratulations on Orchid's immortality! It's important to cherish the moments of sweetness in this tough world - poor Mildred certainly deserves a shot at happiness.

I hope they're all enjoying it, it sounds as if it won't stay so rosy for long...

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad you liked it. It kicked my butt for about a week...

Edit: I think it's the latter, that makes much more sense now I think about it.

The person whose narrating is someone I'm currently calling, for the sake of "Who's narrating this" type questions, the "Flat-fonted Third-person Narrator." While his third person is growing weaker and weaker the more he appears and begins to tell of his own state and involvement, all the same...There is only one person who tells this story from outside it, and only one who removes all font effects (bold to indicate a non-narrator and italics a supernatural speaker). Anytime those appear (all immortal-earning thusfar, some additional scenes like the second intermission and possibly the prologue), it will always be the same narrator, who has not identified himself directly, except that he is "An interested watcher," or so he claims. The ghosts are the first time anyone's been aware of his presence, or spoken to him directly in this capacity.

His identity is a mystery that you might just be the first person on this forum to even begin to speculate about, so I'll just leave you to it. I can do a nice little "fact sheet," if you like, with what I've revealed so far.

Aster actually does appear in this chapter -- she did the ice sculpture, remember?

So interesting that you defined the gender of this 'ueber-dimensional' narrator. I wonder how Uriel will react.
I wonder whether Ariel knows him (too). Intriguing!  :)

I wouldn't say I've done that exactly...Though I have revealed how others percieve "his" gender. This story features a number of characters who take a gendered pronoun by necessity, but don't identify in a gendered way until put in a gendered body -- All beings of an originally angelic nature, for example. Maybe IFs as well, though that's more of a "word of god" thing to me.

Well done on the third immortal! I think immortal dynasties work well because we all get so attached to them and if they all died we'd all miss them too much ::)
Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.

Thanks for putting up with my delays, guys...I'm glad to be back going through my screenshots!

Chapter 63: A New Little Flower

Maybe it's the immortality, but Mom seems...Re-energized.

I think she knows she'll get to travel some more later, which always fires her up.

After the wedding though... Grandma Aster's gone very quiet, in a sort of focused way. She's taken to cradling Grandpa Reed's guitar and strumming it softly...

"Yes, yes...TRANSCEND OBSELESCENCE! Transend your own unreality... Is that the joy you felt, playing like this, darling?...You had...So much passion for so many things...
Oh, well. Soon we'll have faeries to like my playing. Once she gets off her butt and finishes the backlog."

Well, I said it's quiet for Granda Aster, so there's still sort of random shouting.
I can't tell if she's happy or sad about this, but it worries me. It worries me because it's my future...Though, maybe not the part where she talks about someone finishing their backlog. I don't even know.

"I don't miss him at all. JUst to be clear. I'm just keeping you company."
"Don't worry, Uriel. I understand how you feel...It's a little lonely. Still, the time's to watch love again, sweet and tender like that...It's a spring without the season's changing. We're just bitter old roots, stirred up by the rain."
Ariel smiles and nods as she reads her paper.

Speaking, I suppose, of Mildred and I...

She's not been feeling well. I'm worried. What if it's her disease?
[j]"Eh, she'll be fine...For a while. No, when a newly-married woman's sick, it's always the husband behind it."[/i]
"You leave my cheese plate collection out of it!"
"Not that, you spoony chef!...Oh, I'll tell her myself."

"Mildred, you're pregnant."

"Oh. Oh my watcher. I'm...Really?"
"I've watched 3 generations of ladies push out nooboos, plus 1. You're pregnant."
She nearly weeps for joy then, her heart glowing from the promise of a miracle. Her own miracle, something that had seemed impossible in this life.

I know this because...Well...

"Heath, break out the teddies."

"Ohmygod. Ohmygod. Really?!"
"Yes...We're pregnant!"

The moment we hear this, we instantly leap to our preperations. Which mostly means books!

We both want to be the best parents that we can be for our little...Well, we're hoping for a girl. We've got a name picked out and everything.

Meanwhile, Grandma Aster's out trying to get more work.

"No, you should trust me *because* I'm dressed like a cavewoman! They were expert decorators! Look at this photo of a real cave, with the artful placement of the entrails strewn about and the scenic cave painting!"
"...This is a doodle."
"But look how *good* a doodle it is!"

This somehow works...

And results in a candy explosion in this woman's house. I did the icing for the windows...But I thought it was for some sort of art piece!
Unless this is some sort of performance art?
The mysteries of Grandma Aster are profound indeed.

Mildred's been sore from the baby. I do what I can, of course...And I'll take any opportunity to be with my beautiful wife. I know we'll be a happy family.

"You're lonely, too, right, Mom?" Grandma Aster asks Grandma Ariel one day.
"...I'd rather not complain."
"...Let's play together! Play, play!"

"Piano me away the sadness, Mom!"
"I'll do my best, dear."

And their playing fills the days...

Mildred's taking the time off to get to know people...

But it doesn't end well.
"I'm just gonna snag the couch and leave before the Reaper shows up. And we'll forget this ever happened."

But then her biggest introduction begins!

And we welcome to our lives Zinnia Seraphim. She's excitable and Loves the Outdoors. She likes Lime Green, Tofu Dogs, and Egyptian Music.
Isn't she just a bright and cheery flower?
